1 Introduction HP is offering existing StoreOnce D2D Single Node customers the ability to convert their appliances from 2.x.x software to the next generation of StoreOnce software for free. HP StoreOnce 3.4.x (or later) software offers several significant features, the most important being the introduction of HP StoreOnce Catalyst devices that allow low and high bandwidth backups and backup application controlled off-site copy between StoreOnce appliances for those customers using HP DataProtector or Symantec OST. WARNING! HP StoreOnce 3.4.x (or later) software is significantly different to 2.x.x and, as such, the conversion process is data and configuration destructive, it is recommended that ONLY customers who need to take advantage of the new features convert their products. Product Naming New appliances pre-installed with 3.4.x (or later) software have adopted a new set of names; this means that the name shown on your product GUI and CLI will not match the name printed on your existing learning products and hardware labels. When seeking support downloads for your product after the conversion you will need to use this new name to find the information that you require. The following products are supported by this conversion process. This allows single node appliances to work with the HP StoreOnce B6200 product which also supports Catalyst stores. Catalyst functionality requires a license for the backup application that you wish to use and also support in your backup software. The following table shows the part numbers for the different combinations of product model families and backup applications. Symantec NetBackup users require a StoreOnce Catalyst O.S.T. license; Data Protector users require a StoreOnce Catalyst DP license. NOTE: When using Symantec NetBackup, a plug-in application is also required on your Backup Application media server in order to use Catalyst functionality, this can be downloaded from the Software Storage section of your product's Download drivers and software page on http:// www.hp.com/support/downloads. E-LTU NAS and VTL backup targets 3.x.x StoreOnce software continues to support NAS (CIFS and NFS) and VTL (Virtual Tape Library) functionality that was previously available in products running 2.x.x software. There are small differences in the VTL emulation types available in 3.x.x software, so your backup application will need to be re-configured after the conversion. In addition previously configured WWNN and WWPN values will be different after the conversion, so Fibre Channel switch re-configuration will be required. NAS and VTL Replication Replication functionality for NAS and VTL devices is present in 3.x.x software and is compatible with both older single node appliance software and B6200 multi-node appliances. Replication offers a way that you can migrate previously backed up data onto your appliance after conversion to 3.x.x software completes. License Compatibility Licenses for Capacity upgrade and Replication that were purchased for use on your existing appliance are also valid after the conversion to 3.4.x (or later) software. Your appliance will retain its existing serial number so your node-locked licenses can continue to be used. In addition, after the conversion, you can purchase licenses to use the Catalyst functionality. Installation on disk Existing single node products running 2.x.x software boot and run from a flash memory device located inside the appliance chassis. 3.4.x (or later) software, however, is installed on the appliance hard disks. The installation process is outlined below. Note also that the capacity available for backup is smaller after the installation of 3.4.x (or later) software due to installing the software on disk. RAID Configuration Because the system software is now installed on the hard disks in the appliance there is some capacity reduction for non-expanded StoreOnce appliances. (See Comparison of usable capacity (page 9).) However, because the 3.x.x software does not configure a spare disk in the RAID configuration, the available capacity of expanded appliances is the same or higher than appliances running 2.x.x software. StoreOnce CLI The Single Node appliances running 3.4.x (or later) software deliver a customer-accessible, enterprise class CLI interface as well as the GUI. This StoreOnce CLI is used for several configuration tasks and also for day to day administration of some features of the StoreOnce appliance. Feature Differences between 3.x.x and 2.x.x Single Node Software 7
Network Support The 3.4.x (or later) software supports a similar set of configuration modes for both 1GbE and 10GbE networks, significant differences being: Configuration of networking is currently via the StoreOnce CLI interface only IPv6 support is not currently available A single failover and port aggregation port bonding mode is provided rather than the two discrete modes provided in previous software GUI differences The StoreOnce GUI with 3.4.x (or later) software adopts a cross-hp Storage design and structure, it is identical in layout to the HP StoreOnce B6200 Backup system and similar to other storage products from HP, enabling easy and familiar administration experience. There are some features that existed in the GUI with 2.x.x software that are now only present in the CLI with 3.4.x (or later) software, the main ones being: Disk storage configuration Network configuration SNMP trap configuration Date and Time, including NTP, configuration Software upgrade Localization (the 3.x.x GUI is currently only available in English) NOTE: The StoreOnce GUI and CLI default login username and password are different to 2.x.x software; they are Username=Admin; Password=admin. 8 Introduction
2 Before converting to 3.4.x (or later) software Important please read before converting CAUTION: This conversion process is data destructive. The conversion process will require both a hardware change and a complete software re-install. Any backup data will be ERASED at the start of the install process, there is no way to retain your data through this process other than by replicating you data to another StoreOnce appliance prior to conversion and then recovering it afterwards. In addition there is no published process to downgrade your product back to 2.x.x after conversion. CAUTION: software. The data capacity after conversion may be smaller than it was when running 2.x.x Due to reserving disk space for the appliance software, the capacity available for backup when 3.4.x (or later) software is installed will be reduced. The table below shows the available capacity before and after conversion. It is very important that you check the amount of capacity being used currently does not exceed the new capacity that will be available after conversion, otherwise you may not be able to replicate your data back or you will run out of disk space with your current backup retention policy. Table 3 Comparison of usable capacity Appliance 2.x.x Usable Capacity 3.4.x (or later) Usable Capacity Base Fully expanded Base Fully expanded HP StoreOnce 2610 iscsi Backup 1.5 TB 1.5 TB 1.0 TB 1.0 TB HP StoreOnce 2620 iscsi Backup 3.0 TB 3.0 TB 2.5 TB 2.5 TB HP StoreOnce 4210 iscsi Backup 4.5 TB 9.0 TB 4.0 TB 9.0 TB HP StoreOnce 4210 FC Backup 4.5 TB 9.0 TB 4.0 TB 9.0 TB HP StoreOnce 4220 Backup 9.0 TB 18.0 TB 8.0 TB 18.0 TB HP StoreOnce 4420 Backup 9.0 TB 36.0 TB 8.0 TB 38.0 TB HP StoreOnce 4430 Backup 18.0 TB 72.0 TB 16.0 TB 76.0 TB NOTE: Usable capacity is approximate, actual capacity is slightly lower due to system overhead. Warranty implications Converting to 3.4.x (or later) software does not invalidate your current warranty, and the serial number of your appliance will not change. However if you need to contact the HP support organization you will need to inform them that you have converted to 3.4.x (or later) software in order that they can support you effectively. You will also need to provide the original product name/number. Important please read before converting 9
Pre-requisites for conversion Before starting the conversion process you will require the following: Physical access to your StoreOnce appliance. You will need to remove it from the rack so will need a screwdriver, and the provided hex key to open the lid. Remember that the appliance is heavy and it is a two person operation to safely remove it from the rack. A blank 4GB or larger USB flash stick. Copies of your license keys for capacity expansion and replication, either in file format for upload or in text format to type in after the upgrade. A monitor and USB keyboard attached to the appliance. Updated manuals for your StoreOnce appliance for use after converting to 3.x.x software, these can be downloaded by visiting: http://www.hp.com/support/manuals and entering the new product name, see Mapping existing and new products (page 5). Before starting conversion you also need to ensure that: All system hardware components have up-to-date firmware, this is VERY important to ensure that the install process completes successfully. Go to www.hp.com/go/support and type the name of your existing HP StoreOnce D2D Backup System product into the search box to locate the component firmware bundle for your product and the system BIOS. The system hardware is healthy, otherwise the install will fail. There should be: 1. No failed or predictive failure disks 2. RAID controller capacitor or Battery connected and charged 3. Power Supplies all plugged in and working 4. All system fans working 5. All memory modules in good state For D2D4312 and D2D4324 products, before powering down when running Gen 2 software check that there are no failed disks and that the RAID spare disk is located in the lower right-hand disk slot in the appliance. If that is the case, the LEDs will be off on this disk. If this disk is not the spare, this is a good indication that the Internal RAID SAS cables are incorrectly cabled and must be corrected before conversion. See Troubleshooting (page 24) for more details. Your data replication to other appliances is up-to-date and not running. You have made provision for backups to continue, if required, during the conversion process. You have made provision to be able to restore any user data from an alternative location. You have made a note of all configuration settings that may be required after conversion. Recording settings Before conversion also record any settings that might be required, such as: IP addresses and other network settings if using static addressing Email server and alert settings SNMP settings Replication partner appliance addresses Local settings for replication such as blackout windows Share Names and CIFS/NFS server settings Library configurations 10 Before converting to 3.4.x (or later) software
Retaining your data via StoreOnce Replication If you are already using replication to provide an off-site copy of the data being backed up to the appliance that you are converting, this is the best way to migrate data back onto the appliance after conversion completes. If you are not currently using replication but have other HP StoreOnce appliances available, these could provide you with a way to retain your data over the conversion process. Some important points to note are: 1. Make sure that replication is complete. 2. Make sure that all data required is being replicated. Check your VTL cartridge mappings and share mappings to make sure that everything is replicated. 3. You should remove replication mappings from and to the appliance being converted before commencing the conversion process. This will ensure that the replication partner devices return to their non-replicating mode and are available for restore operations if required. 4. Remember that replication recovery to your converted appliance will take a very long time over a low bandwidth link. You may need to consider other seeding processes to speed up the recovery process, such as co-locating the appliances on a LAN. Retaining your data via StoreOnce Replication 11
3 Firmware component update Before starting the conversion process you must ensure that all system hardware components have up-to-date firmware. Go to www.hp.com/go/support/downloads and type the name of your existing HP StoreOnce D2D Backup System product into the search box to locate the component firmware bundle for your product and the system BIOS. You will need to power off the HP StoreOnce D2D Backup System. In order to prevent any backup application failures or warning messages, it is advised that before commencing the firmware update the following actions are taken: 1. Make sure that there are no backup jobs scheduled to run to any devices on the HP StoreOnce D2D Backup System in the next 30 minutes. 2. Pause replication on the HP StoreOnce D2D Backup System that is being updated. Hardware components firmware upgrade Use the Firmware quick jump to locate the D2D Component Firmware bundle for your product. The same ISO image is used for all products. The firmware update can be carried out locally at the StoreOnce Backup system or remotely via ilo. To update locally, a 1GB or larger memory key is required for the ISO image download. NOTE: Download the HP USB Creation tool from the HP Insight Foundation website; this is used to copy the content of the firmware image to a 1GB Flash stick using a Windows PC. The website is at: http://www.hp.com/go/foundation. The upgrade process uses the HPSUM utility. Please read the release notes for the firmware upgrade and follow the instructions carefully. BIOS upgrade The BIOS is less likely to need upgrading, but the process is described here for completeness. Use the BIOS quick jump to locate the System ROMPaq Firmware Upgrade. There are two Systems ROMPag firmware upgrades available: Systems ROMPaq Firmware Upgrade for HP D2D 41xx/25xx G2 Backup System Systems ROMPaq Firmware Upgrade for HP D2D 43xx G2 Backup System 1. Obtain a formatted USB Key media. 2. Download the SoftPaq to a directory on a system running Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows 7, Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Windows Server 2008, or Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 and change to that directory. 3. From that drive and directory, execute the downloaded SoftPaq file. Simply double click on the SPxxxxx.exe file and follow the installation wizard to complete the SoftPaq installation process. At the end of a successful installation of the SoftPaq a web page will automatically appear to provide you with the different methods for restoring and/or upgrading the firmware on the system. 4. After the USB Key is created, you may delete the downloaded file if you wish. 5. Insert this USB Key into the USB Key port of the system to be updated and power the system on to boot to the USB Key. 12 Firmware component update
4 Hardware modification WARNING! The units are heavy and require a two-person lift. HP StoreOnce 25xx and 41xx products are fitted with friction rails, so cannot be extended out of the rack. They must be removed completely. CAUTION: The conversion process is data destructive, do not proceed any further if you need to retain any of the backup data on the StoreOnce appliance that is running 2.x.x software. NOTE: See also Conversion checklist (page 30). IMPORTANT: conversion: The following older products running 2.x.x software are not supported for HP StoreOnce D2D4106fc Backup system: EH998A HP StoreOnce D2D4112 Backup system: EH993B The conversion process may take several hours to complete and many more for storage rebuilding to completely finish. So make sure that alternative provision is made for your backups during the process. The first step in the conversion process is to remove the internal flash memory module from your existing StoreOnce appliance. To do this: 1. Safely power down the appliance using the web interface. 2. Disconnect all cables from the appliance. 3. Unscrew the retaining screws which hold the unit into the rack at the front. 4. Slide the unit out of the rack, some units have sliding rails which allow the unit to remain in the rack, other units on friction rails must be removed completely and placed on a flat surface. See the Maintenance and Service Guide for your product for more details. 5. Remove the lid from the appliance, this may need to be unlocked using the hex tool attached to the back of the appliance. 6. Locate the Flash memory stick which contains the 2.x.x software. 13

7. Remove the Flash Memory stick (1) and store safely, in some cases a Velcro tie will need to be unfastened to remove the stick. (It is not recommended that this USB stick is used for the 3.x.x install image.) NOTE: The memory module for the HP StoreOnce D2D4112/4106 and the HP StoreOnce D2D2502/2504 has a cable. It should not be necessary to remove this. If you do so, first unscrew the bracket (2) holding the USB connector and then disconnect the cable from the motherboard (3). 8. Replace the lid and re-rack the appliance. 9. Re-attach cables and a keyboard and monitor. HP D2D4312/4324 only, reconfiguring 1GbE ports For D2D4312 and D2D4324 systems you will need to reconfigure the 1GbE network connections in order to be able to use the network after 3.x.x system software is installed. To do this: Remove the blanking plugs from the lower two 1GbE network ports on the network card in the PCIe slot of the server Remove any connected network cables from the upper two 1GbE network ports and re-locate them to the lower ports. Make sure that the lower port (Port 1) is used because this will be the default port that will be enabled in DHCP mode after installation completes. The following figure illustrates an HP D2D4312 Backup system; the 1GbE port configuration is the same for an HP D2D4324 Backup system. 5 Software Installation and configuration The steps in the software installation and configuration are as follows: Download the 3.4.x (or later) Quick Restore ISO image and copy to a USB Flash stick. Delete existing storage logical drives. Boot the appliance from the QR Flash Stick and perform the software install. Perform first boot appliance configuration. Configure Network Settings. Apply capacity and replication licenses. Configure appliance storage. Configure other appliance settings. Create backup targets. NOTE: See also Conversion checklist (page 30). IMPORTANT: conversion: The following older products running 2.x.x software are not supported for HP StoreOnce D2D4106fc Backup system: EH998A HP StoreOnce D2D4112 Backup system: EH993B Download Quick Restore ISO Image The StoreOnce Quick Restore ISO Image is used to install the 3.4.x (or later) software image onto the StoreOnce appliance disks. The Quick Restore ISO Image is available for download from: http://www.hp.com/go/storeonceqr. You will need an HP Passport account to download the QR image, this can be created when you first access the download website. Select StoreOnce 26xx, 42xx, 43xx appliances QR image and download the ISO. Create a bootable QR USB Stick Download the HP USB Creation tool from the HP Insight Foundation website, this is used to copy the content of the QR image to a 4GB Flash stick using a Windows PC. The website is at: http:// www.hp.com/go/foundation. IMPORTANT: Do not use the USB stick that was taken out of the appliance because this has pre-configured partitions that the HP USB Key for Windows application cannot delete. Only use a 4GB or greater flash stick, which is completely blank or has one single FAT16 or 13 partition on it. Using any other configuration may result in the creation process appearing to complete successfully but it will not deliver a bootable USB key. 1. Select the Downloads tab. 2. Scroll down to the HP USB Key for Windows application. 3. Download the latest version. 4. Install on a Windows PC. 5. Run Start All Programs HP System Tools HP USB Key Utility. 6. When prompted to select a task to performance choose: Create a bootable USB Key from CD/DVD. And click Next. Download Quick Restore ISO Image 17
7. Insert a blank 4GB USB key when prompted. This USB key must not contain any previously configured Linux partitions, it may contain a single FAT32 partition which will be overwritten. 8. On the Select Media page choose Browse for ISO file and locate the downloaded QR image. Choose the drive letter of the USB key media to be used. 9. Proceed with the USB Key creation. NOTE: The process takes several minutes to complete the creation. During this process the HP USB Key for Windows tool may report (not responding) and the file copy animation may stop. This is normal, and you should continue to wait for the process to complete. 10. Once complete safely remove the USB stick from the Windows PC. Delete existing storage logical drives Before installing 3.x.x. software it is necessary to remove previously configured storage logical drives, this is done using the Smart Array boot. 1. Power on the StoreOnce Backup system and wait for the initial Power On self tests to complete. When prompted to Press any key to view Option ROM messages press a key. 2. Wait for the first Smart Array controller to be discovered and press F8 to enter the Option ROM configuration utility. 3. Navigate to the Delete Logical Drive option from the main menu and select it. 18 Software Installation and configuration
4. Select the highest number logical drive (in the example below select Logical Drive # 4) and press F8 to delete it. Then confirm the deletion with F3. 5. Work up the list of logical drives deleting them all. 6. Exit the Option ROM configuration for this controller. 7. Wait for the next controller (depending on the StoreOnce product model there will be between 1 and 4 Smart Array controllers) to be discovered and repeat the Logical Drive deletion process. 8. With all logical drives deleted, when the StoreOnce appliance now completes device discovery it will attempt to boot an operating system and will fail because there are no bootable devices remaining in the system. 9. Shut the StoreOnce appliance down by pressing the power button. Delete existing storage logical drives 19
Boot the appliance and install the StoreOnce 3.x.x Software 1. Make sure that power, network, keyboard and monitor, and all expansion enclosures are attached to the StoreOnce appliance that you are converting. Insert the QR USB stick into one of the front or rear USB port and power on the system. IMPORTANT: The QR USB stick should be the only USB storage device attached to the appliance. Ensure that there are no other USB sticks attached and remove any integrated KVM devices which may be presenting storage devices to the appliance. 2. After the system powers up and completes self-tests it will boot from the USB key and launch the Linux installation process. 3. After a few seconds a boot splash screen will appear offering the choice of Reimage (R) or Exit (E). Press R to continue the installation process. 4. A warning will be displayed indicating that all data will be lost after typing yes. THIS IS THE LAST CHANCE TO EXIT THE INSTALL PROCESS WITHOUT DATA LOSS. Type yes to continue. NOTE: If you select "no", the system will immediately reboot and you will need to remove the USB stick. 5. The installation process will now continue and will: 1. Delete existing Logical storage configuration on the appliance head disks. 2. Create a new Logical storage partition. Depending on the appliance type, this may be a pair of mirrored disks or a LUN stripe across all disks in the appliance. 3. Install the operating system and appliance software on the system. 4. After installation completes you will be prompted to remove the USB stick and reboot. Press a key to reboot the system. Complete first boot appliance configuration When the system first boots into the 3.4.x (or later) StoreOnce software it will run through a set of first boot setup tasks. This is mostly automated but you will be required to press 2 to continue at two stages in the process. At these points a message will indicate that this is the last chance to prevent data loss. In fact re-configuration has already occurred at this point. Pressing 1 will result in the system rebooting back into the first boot configuration phase again. During the final parts of the first boot process some modules will report that they failed to load. This is normal for this phase of the configuration process. After completion of this process you will be presented with a login prompt that shows the default appliance name which is HP<appliance serial number>. At this point the appliance installation is complete but there is no storage configured and a default network configuration has been applied. Log into the appliance StoreOnce CLI It is now possible to log into the appliance using the default credentials: Username = Admin Password = admin NOTE: These are different from the default credentials used for 2.x.x software products. After logging in a error message will be presented: "Error reading VTL configuration parameters. Some VTL commands will not work correctly." This is normal at this point because there is not yet any storage configured. 20 Software Installation and configuration
nl Configure network settings At this point the appliance is ready to be accessed over a network using the StoreOnce CLI or GUI. After conversion the appliance 1GbE network will be enabled on Port 1 and it will be configured in DHCP mode. If the network to which Port 1 of the appliance is attached supports DHCP and you plan to continue to use DHCP on this interface, you can discover the DHCP IP address using the command: net show status all Alternatively, you can reconfigure the network connections and add additional network configurations using the command net set wizard to run the Network Configuration wizard. See the HP StoreOnce Backup system Installation and Configuration guide for more details on network configuration. After configuring the network you can access the StoreOnce CLI via ssh either from a Linux system or from a Windows ssh client, such as PuTTy, using any of the configured IP addresses for the appliance. Network settings can be reconfigured remotely, if required, via the command line interface. To do this: Apply licenses for capacity expansion Licenses for capacity expansion that were purchased for use on your existing appliance are also valid after the conversion to 3.4.x (or later) software. Before configuring your appliance storage it is important to apply any capacity expansion license keys. The storage configuration process will not complete unless licenses are provided for all attached storage. To do so either: Upload the license files or Type in the license key strings To upload a license file: 1. Use an SFTP appliance for Windows or Linux to upload a license file to the repository directory on the appliance. 2. Log in using the Username = Admin ; Password = admin. 3. Run the command: license load <license filename> 4. Check that the license has been applied with the command: license show To type in a license string: 1. Use the command: license add <license string> 2. Check that the license has been applied with the command: license show NOTE: It is not possible to add Replication or Catalyst licenses at this point because there is no storage configured. Configure appliance storage Once previously created storage LUNs have been deleted the process of creating new Logical storage for the appliance that is now running 3.4.x (or later) software is accomplished via thestoreonce CLI by running a number of StoreOnce CLI commands. Configure network settings 21
nl 1. Prepare storage. After the delete command has completed, build the storage system using the following StoreOnce CLI command to discover and add storage to the system: hardware prepare storage This command will return quickly once prerequisite checks are completed but the process of actually creating the LUNs may take several minutes to complete depending on the amount of storage being added. If successful, this command will return Command Successful. The command will fail if: A previous prepare storage command is already running There is no storage to be added There are insufficient expansion licenses applied to allow the entire expansion to complete (in this case no expansion will take place until sufficient licenses are present for all added storage) There are any foreign LUNs already present on the attached storage There are any failed or predictive fail disks in either the existing or newly added storage. If the storage is connected to an incorrect RAID controller or is daisy-chained from the wrong expansion enclosure. 2. Monitor progress. After the command returns successfully it is possible to monitor the status of the LUN creation process using the following command: hardware show storage status (or its alias: system show status) This command will return either of the following after a prepare command has been sent: Discovering or Discovered XXTB 3. Add storage. Once the discovery process is complete, run the following command in order to format the storage LUN with file system segments: hardware add storage This command will then create and expand the filesystem to use all of the storage. The process can take a long time to complete and the new capacity will not be available until it is finished. HP StoreOnce 2610/2620 Backup system HP StoreOnce 4210/4220 and 4420/4430 Backup system Approximately 30 minutes Head only = approximately one hour Add approximately 20 minutes per expansion shelf The expansion can be monitored using the following command: hardware show storage status (or its alias: system show status) This command will return either of the following after an add command has been sent: Formatting or Formatted XXTB The hardware add storage command will fail if: There is an outstanding prepare or add command in progress Any of the error conditions described in the prepare storage command have not been rectified 22 Software Installation and configuration
Configure other appliance settings and create backup targets Your StoreOnce Appliance is now converted to 3.4.x (or later) software and ready to use, refer to the HP StoreOnce Backup system User Guide and the HP StoreOnce Backup system Installation and Configuration guide for more information on completing configuration, for example: applying licenses for Replication and Catalyst licenses, setting up email alerts and SNMP traps, and for information on creating and using backup devices such as Virtual Tape libraries, NAS shares or Catalyst stores. IMPORTANT: Licenses for Replication that were purchased for use on your existing appliance are also valid after the conversion to 3.4.x (or later) software. In addition, after the conversion, you can purchase licenses to use the Catalyst functionality. Please note that all licenses are applied via the StoreOnce CLI, not via the GUI. See Apply licenses for capacity expansion (page 21) for more details about loading or adding licenses. Configure other appliance settings and create backup targets 23
6 Troubleshooting Problem The system boots from the QR USB flash drive, but fails after the hit R to restore prompt with the following error. Solution: The QR USB stick should be the only USB storage device attached to the appliance. Ensure that there are no other USB sticks attached and remove any integrated KVM devices which may be presenting storage devices to the appliance. Problem: I am converting a StoreOnce D2D4312 or D2D4324 Backup system, installation has failed with the following message: Solution: There are several possible reasons for this issue, however, the most likely reason on these products is that the internal SAS RAID cabling is incorrect and, therefore, disks are enumerated in the wrong order. This may have happened if a RAID controller or motherboard change has occurred in the past. Check the cabling against the correct configuration below and re-configure if required.
