Solution brief Regardless of size and industry, many of today s organizations struggle with exploding volumes of data, and the concurrent need to enlist copious amounts of storage without breaking the bank (or growing the IT staff roster). Adding too much storage can result in inflated capital expenses and higher energy and cooling costs; adding too little means you ll likely incur downtime and soon need to spend even more to keep your system running efficiently. Simplified data protection from HP D2D Backup Systems with StoreOnce Embedded software technology that s integrated into HP Disk-to-Disk (D2D) Backup Systems, HP StoreOnce provides the data deduplication that optimizes long-term data storage. Without deduplication, data protection processes typically entail saving multiple instances of what is essentially the same file (with minute changes among the different versions), filling valuable storage space and inflating power and cooling costs. Copies of these versions are then transmitted offsite for disaster recovery purposes. By automatically finding and then eliminating redundant file information, HP StoreOnce deduplication typically permits the retention of 20-times more backup data on disk. Being able to retain more backup data on disk for longer periods of time reduces downtime and enables greater data accessibility for the rapid restoration of lost or corrupt files. Handsfree, unattended daily backup is especially important for remote or branch offices (ROBO) and other environments with limited IT resources. Designed on a standard, open architecture, HP StoreOnce enables portability of common deduplication software across different platforms, which simplifies the management process and prevents the need to re-inflate the data as it is moved across a data center. In addition, HP StoreOnce offers comprehensive data protection support, providing Virtual Tape Library (VTL), Network Attached Storage (NAS), and Open Storage (OST) interfaces over ethernet and fibre channel () and supplying broad support for industry-standard backup applications. In addition, deduplication enables replication with lower bandwidth requirements, thereby making it easier to consolidate backup information from multiple remote locations. And HP StoreOnce s automated deduplication saves time by permitting data recovery via disk instead of an operatorintensive tape process, and saves floor space in already-crowded data centers. HP StoreOnce: Runs as an application/service within a standard Linux operating system. Resides on a standard file system. Uses a standard RAID stack for data storage. What this means is that over time HP StoreOnce can be easily integrated with other HP components, including HP s scale-out file system and HP Data Protector backup software. HP also gains the ability to leverage StoreOnce as part of a common storage software stack for HP Converged Infrastructure.
