The fundamentals are taught in Dutch and French. The modules are given in English. The 5-days Fundamentals course are open to everyone. The modules require having followed the fundamentals course or obtained the CPIM certificate. This course is an excellent preparation to the ELA senior level certification.

FUNDAMENTALS COURSE 5 day training with no prerequisites Course summary: The Fundamentals course presents the core concepts of operations and supply chain management. It introduces the major tools to improve the performance of all operations processes along the entire supply chain. The attention goes to the distinct processes governing the flow of goods and the flow of information: planning, sourcing, production and distribution, and its interaction with other functional departments (sales and finance) and with suppliers and customers. Different key operational dimensions are analyzed such as inventory management, capacity management and flow time management. We study the effect of variability on process performance and the managerial levers for planning and control. All this needs to be evaluated on an economic and financial level (e.g. profitability or Return on Invested Capital). Our objective is to show how managers can design and control their operations to improve the performance of any business process and we formulate implications for managerial actions to enhance both operational and financial performance. Course content description: Day 1: Supply Chain Fundamentals March 13, 2013 In order to strengthen the competitive position of your organization, it is key to manage the flow of goods and information throughout the entire supply chain. In this module we present the supply chain fundamentals: the characteristics of the flows, their integration and the terms for continuous improvement. We introduce the fundamental process measures that affect the operational and supply chain performance. These elements will serve as structure of the course. The relation between throughput, inventory and lead time (feature for every process inside the company) is analyzed and the impact of process improvements on financial aspects will be addressed. We focus on the dynamics that supply chains faces when dealing with customers (and customers customers) on the one hand, and suppliers (and suppliers suppliers) on the other. We highlight potential problems, their causes, and formulate managerial implications to improve supply chain management. This is illustrated with a simulation game. Day 2: Inventory Management & Forecasting March 20, 2013 For most of the companies and sectors, the forecasting of the demand of the market is the starting element for a vast range of processes in the supply chain. A good forecast significantly reduces uncertainty and allows to also significantly reducing buffers. Inventory Management: even though expensive and in need of drastic reduction, stock stays a necessary evil. In this session techniques will be presented to determine inventory parameters. EOQ s, safety stock, re-order point and the influencing parameters in the different environments will be discussed. Day 3: Integrated Planning & ERP March 27, 2013 We address the essentials of managing the physical and informational flows in any operations system. Focus is on the way an ERP (integrated planning) system works in order to balance the resources with the (expected) demand. Planning needs to define the future needs for necessary resources (staff, buildings, machines, materials, cash,...). The basic hierarchical approach of planning supposes definition of resources and their level of use and needs to answer the basic questions for any element in the chain: what, how much and when to deliver, to make, to procure? An ERP simulation exercise is used to demonstrate the general planning concepts (SOP, Master Plan, Materials management, Capacity management, Scheduling and Sequencing, Sourcing, Operations Control) using a didactic ERP software. This will be the starting point to discover the role of such systems, their possibilities and limits in the context of a dynamic company with its complexity and uncertainty. Day 4: Lead Time and Capacity Management. April 17, 2013 This session provides insight in the prime determinants of lead times and capacity management. The theory of constraints is developed to enable organisations to improve information or product flows in a service or manufacturing context. Bottlenecks can be related to resources, but also due to organizational inefficiencies or even market demand. This bottleneck must be identified and the whole system must be managed with this in mind. One of the most commonly ignored relationships in planning is the relationship between capacity utilisation, variability and lead times. Factory Physics explores this fundamental relationship and demonstrate the damaging impact of and solutions for variability, outages, and capacity constraints. As such, Factory Physics provides a powerful tool to reduce lead times effectively. Day 5: Lean Basics April 24, 2013 Lean fundamentals. Due to the pressure on costs, many companies are focused internally on cost optimalization. The «Lean» thinking and associated concepts, such as Kaizen, Kanban, Just-In-Time, 5S, Value Stream Mapping are indispensable in the journey to Operations Excellence. The application of lean not only extends to production but also to logistics and administration.

Cost and service improvements force organizations to set up collaborations with customers and suppliers. We will tackle this subject by first working on the inventory deployment and distribution network management: where do we place which stock based on sales anticipation and how do we manage capacity in a distribution network. Capacity topics touched are warehousing, transportation and stock financing. Further we will work on the collaboration aspects: horizontal and vertical collaboration with customers and suppliers as well as with colleagues delivering common markets. Topics touched are VMI, CPFR, pooling, etc. Based on this knowledge we will focus on performance measurement in distribution and distribution cost evaluation, linked to improvement projects and improvement focus. Distribution network (re)design is detailed as one of the improvement and evaluation topics in distribution. Process Excellence and Six Sigma - Duration: 2 days: May 22 - May 29, 2013 DMAIC project methodology Process flow mapping Cause and Effect analysis In this module we explore Six Sigma in more detail. Starting with the structured approach we will guide you through the 5 basic steps in Six Sigma: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control (DMAIC). We explore different tools which we can use in the different phases of the DMAIC method. Popular tools are Process flow mapping, Fishbone diagram, FMEA, Cause and effect diagram and much more. The different tools will be explained and more important, they will be placed in the right sequence. In this module we also combining the statistical approach combined with practical experience and give you some tips to start implementing (or improve) Six Sigma in your own company. Procurement for Supply Chain - Duration: 2 days: June 5 - June 12, 2013 Supplier base management Make or buy decision Global versus local sourcing Supply Chain Managers are increasingly exposed to procurement and sourcing decisions. In this module we focus on tools to leverage on both efficiency and effectiveness of the value chain, and develop lasting relationships with suppliers and subcontractors to anticipate market, supplier and service risks. We formulate advice on how to cope with key decisions regarding global vs. local sourcing and make or buy decisions. Sustainable Supply Chains - Duration: 2 days: June 19 - June 26, 2013 Sustainable design: from product/service design to new supply chain business models Carbon Footprint Corporate Social Responsibility Reverse logistics. With economic and environmental climates on the radar screen of everyone from consumers to politicians, many companies are rushing to reduce their environmental footprint and improve their processes to cut back expenses. The respect for the environment, ethics and social welfare is also high on the agenda. These multi-attibute processes have made sustainable supply chain management one of the most critical disciplines in the business world today. This 2-days program is specifically designed for professionals involved in every facet of sustainability and supply chain management including planning, procurement, manufacturing and logistics, as well as executives, managers and HR directors responsible for overseeing and/ or training employees tasked with sustainability initiatives, in other words, this course is open to anyone interested in gaining or improving their sustainability skills.
