18.04.2005 version 3.1 Security modem with USB port user guide

Introduction Congratulations on selecting the new SECURITY MODEM data transfer device. We designed this modem for special users who are involved in computerized remote programming of electronic security systems, that is local control panels. Before using the unit please read this user manual thoroughly. We summarized the most important information and settings according to the application areas that we consider vital for successful application of the modem. General This modem is a communication device by which remote programming of the convenient local control panels, security systems installed in the protected premises, can be done via a telephone line by a computer (download/upload). The unit is capable to communicate using the Canadian and American and the European data transfer standards, therefore it supports Bell 103 and the V.21 mode. The modem was tested using the following producer s devices: DSC, FBII, PARADOX, NAPCO, ARITECH, C&K, DS, SUMMIT, PENTA, Scantronic, Honeywell, Satel, Pima, Texecom etc.. New features added to BELL103 SECURITY MODEM: - V1.1 USB port and RS232 port (driver included) - Power supply via USB port (external supply not required) - In-built line simulator enhances local download - European CCITT V.21 protocol support besides Bell103 - Supports 2100Hz signals for digital phone switching systems Specifications Serial port speed: 110, 300, 1200bps Modem protocol: Bell103, V.21(CCITT) Echo suppression tone: supported USB interface: V1.1. B type socket Line simulator: external supply 9-24V or internal power supply,i=30ma Power: 9-16DC/AC external or 5V via USB Power consumption: 35mA standby, 100mA operation Environment: 0-40 C, 0-95% relative humidity Dimensions: 145mm x 85mm x 37mm Weight: 250g

Connectors: There is a standard RS232 DSUB9, a USB B-type connector and a power jack Power jack The required voltage is 8-15VAC/DC, means that it accepts AC or DC, as well. There is protection against over current (max 200mA) and over voltage (max.18v). The over current protection realised by melting fuse. Use only transformer able to provide at least 300mA and stabilized DC (required 9VDC). Note: When using USB port, external power supply is not required since the USB port is able to supply the modem. Connection to the PC(RS232 port) Connect the computer to the modem only in a power free state! You can connect the DB9 connector of the modem to the PC by a standard 9-9 modem cable (EIA/TIA- 232). Note: when using RS232 to connect to the PC using Windows (XP, Win9x etc.), no need to install driver for the modem since Windows recognises it as a standard modem. Connection to the PC (USB port) When the modem is using external supply connect the modem to the USB port via USB-A/USB-B cable. For example, USB printer cable. At the first startup the system scans for the required USB driver, therefore it must be installed prior to the modem connection. The CD provided contains the required drivers. These are the followings: FOR WINDOWS: wd_pl-2303hx_v20014v20026.zip Run the unpacked.exe file. The installation is automatic. FOR MAC:

md_pl2303h_hx_x_1.0.9b1.hqx PL-2303X_HX_H driver 1.0.9b1.pkg.hqx for Mac OS 10.1.x and above Release Date: 02/23/2005 FOR LINUX: ld_pl2303_v0728.rar PL-2303 (Chip H/HX/X) Linux driver for RedHat 7.3/8.0/9.0 Only. Required USB drivers can be downloaded from: http://tech.prolific.com.tw/visitor/v_filebrw_result.asp LED indication: USB The USB V1.0 port active and registered RXD The "Receive Data" light is on when the modem is sending data to the PC. TXD The "Transmit Data" light is on when the PC is sending data to the modem. CD DT OH The "Carrier Detect" is supplied by the modem to the PC. This is the status indicator of the modem carrier. The "Data Terminal Ready" is on when the connection is ready. Control of the connection comes form the PC. The "Off-Hook" light is on when the modem has hooked on the telephone line. PWR The "Power" light indicates the modem has power. Right side Linesimulator terminal:

The linesimulator supplies the line voltage and the loop current of the telephone line. This is useful for security panels do not have serial port input and phoneline is required for local download. -V: external line simulator supply negative point +V: external line simulator supply positive point The line simulator bears 8-24VDC power supply. The input reversed polarity protected. LINE: line output of the line simulator. For local download, connect these two outputs (no polarity) to the TIP and RING terminals of the control panel, parallel to the LINE output of the modem. PHONE: Connector for the telephone line. During communication the modem isolates the telephone set form the line. Connecting the phoneline simulator: The power for the line simulator can be supplied either from the AUX or for example from the 12VDC battery of the modem. Since the line simulator can not emulate rings when using the simulator, set the softwares to the adequate dialing condition (e.g.: for Paradox softwares: Blinddial). Setting the modem for the download softwares of the various producers

PARADOX Set Hayes 1200 bauds external type in the Program setup menu modem, printer configuration item. If there is no such type available, create a new one with the following setup.

In WINLOAD select OTHERS and perform the followings. Dialing method, volume, serial port number can be set in different ways according to the hosting PC and the user needs.

DSC Set Hayes 1200 type in Program configuration menu modem name item. For the DLS3 users: set the incoming and outcoming baudrate o to 300baud!

FBII Set Hayes Smartmodem 300/1200 type in System setup menu modem config item. In case of modem remote download the FBII F7702 modem interface is not necessary. The FBII F7702 interface has two functions: On one hand it makes possible the local download even without using a telephone satellite exchange, on the other hand it is interfacing the higher version download modems. However the SECURITY MODEM can sense if it must do FBII download and supplies the necessary signals automatically to enable downloading. The modem naturally can operate with FBII F7702 interface. NAPCO Set Hayes Smartmodem 1200 type in the setup.exe program in the setup menu. Then find MODEM.LST file in the directory containing the download software and do the following modification in it with an editor such as Norton Commander Editor. Find the line where Hayes Smartmodem 1200 type is mentioned and correct that modem string according to the followings: ATNAPCO Using only capitals is a must. Remember: only this modem accepts this modem string, other modems seeing it indicate a failure! This modification is necessary so you don t have to use NAPCO PCI line interface. Of course if you have this unit you do not have to do this modification. DETECTION SYSTEM In case of DS74xx control panels add a B1 command to the Inic string in Utilities menu Modem sub-menu. For EDM Solution series insert B15 command into the string. The command makes the modem use CCITT communication format. PENTA Select Hayes-compatible (300bps) modem type in the download software and select Hayes Smartmodem 1200 form the modem names. Add B1 command to the second line of the Setup field and modify S9=0 setting to S9=1 in the modem string.

C&K Sierra: Set CFSK/Bell103 format in the program Configure menu Communication submenu. System 238,236,2316: Set CFSK/Bell103 format in the program Configure menu Communication submenu. Insert the next command in the Additional modem initialization commands : B1 Any method of local and remote downloading can be used with the above settings.* NOTE: Use the following modem settings when the panel uses Honywell.

ARITECH Do the following modifications in the modem settings menu modem initialization string item: TONE SELECT: ATV1Q0S0=0 SETUP 2 STRING: ATE0 USER STRING: ATL1M0X0S7=50 ADVANCED ON/OFF: void PRE-DIAL STRING: ATS9=50S10=10 PRE ANSWER STRING: void POST CNCT STRING: ATS9=1S10=255 HANGUP STRING: void DIAL TYPE STRING: R In the control panel choose BELL103 communication format. Bell103 is default setting, so it probably does not need to be modified. SUMMIT Select Hayes-compatible (300bps) or Hayes compatible (110) modem type in the Summit download software and modify S9=0 setting to S9=1 in the modem string.

SATEL DLOAD software modem settings are the followings: Switching 2100Hz output signal for digital phone switching systems Write the S27 S-registry to enable or disable the tone emition. By default, the modem does not emit 2100Hz signal then S27=9. To enable the emition, use the S27=0 script to the modem. S27=0 script must be written in to the modem initialising string. If enabled, the signal is emitted for 1 second right after the modem picks up the line it answers the call. If the modem dials, the signal starts when the carrier appears and lasts for a second, as well.
