AT-S39 Version 1.3 Management Software for the AT-8024 and AT-8024GB Fast Ethernet Switches Supported Platforms Software Release Notes Please read this document before you begin to use the AT-S39 management software. AT-S39 Version 1.3 management software is supported on the following switches: AT-8024 Fast Ethernet Switch AT-8024GB Fast Ethernet Switch Product Documentation For hardware installation instructions, refer to the following guide: AT-8024 and AT-8024GB Installation Guide (PN 613-50244-00) For management instructions, refer to the following guide: AT-S39 Version 1.3 Management Software User s Guide (PN 613-50245-00) The installation guide is provided on the documentation CD included with the product. The user s guide is available from the Allied Telesyn web site at www.alliedtelesyn.com. Upgrading a Switch This release of the management software consists of the following two files: ATS39.img New AT-S39 management image file ATS39.ldr New boot loader Allied Telesyn recommends downloading both files when upgrading a switch. The files should be downloaded in the following order: ATS39.img Follow the procedure in Chapter 16 of the AT-S39 Version 1.1 User s Guide to download the new version onto the switch. It is recommended that you load the new software image from a local management session. (To load the new software image using TFTP, you must first load the AT-S39 V1.1 Patch onto the switch. The patch can be downloaded from a local management session or with TFTP.) ATS39.ldr After loading the management software, download the boot loader from a local management session or with TFTP. Please note that the procedure for downloading a file through a local management session has changed in Version 1.3. The process has been simplified with the addition of the new menu item Xmodem File Transfer in the Administration menu. For instructions, refer to Chapter 16 in the AT-S39 Version 1.3 User s Guide. PN 613-50301-00 Rev A 1 Allied Telesyn, Inc.

The current switch configuration information, such as IP address and VLANs, is retained when new management software is installed. AT-S39 Version 1.3 New Features Auto-detection on the RS232 Terminal Port The new AT-S39 boot loader (Version 1.1) provides the switch with an auto-detect feature that allows it to automatically determine the speed of a terminal connected to the RS232 Terminal Port. This feature simplifies the task of starting a local management session. Pressing any key on your keyboard within five seconds after powering on or resetting the switch activates the feature. The switch responds by automatically determining the speed of the terminal and configuring the speed of the RS232 Terminal Port. Otherwise, the switch uses a default baud rate of 115200 bits per second (bps). The switch maintains the terminal port speed until the system is powered on or reset. The range of the port s baud rate is 1200 to 115200 bps. For information on how to start a local management session, refer to Chapter 2 in the AT-S39 Version 1.3 User s Guide. Simplified Software Downloads through a Local Management Session A new item has been added to the Administration menu to simplify the task of downloading files, such as software images or configuration files, onto a switch from a local management session. The new Xmodem File Transfer menu selection eliminates the need for invalidating the current software image when installing new software. For further information on this feature, refer to Chapter 16 in the AT-S39 Version 1.3 User s Guide. Releasing an IP Address Issued by a DHCP Server Another new item in the Administration menu is Release DHCP IP Address. This selection is useful if you configured the switch to obtain its IP address from a DHCP. Selecting the new menu option before resetting or powering off the unit prompts the switch to release its IP address back to the DHCP server for assignment to another network device. Configuring IGMP Snooping from a Web Browser Management Session The web browser management interface now features a window for configuring IGMP snooping. For information on the new window, refer to Chapter 27 in the AT-S39 Version 1.3 User s Guide. PN 613-50301-00 Rev A 2 Allied Telesyn, Inc.

Resolved Issues Telnet Management Session and Pinging over Subnets Previous management software versions did not support managing a switch from a Telnet management session when the management workstation and the switch were on different subnets. You also could not ping the switch from a workstation on a different subnet. Both issues have been resolved. Switch Management through a Tagged Port The switch could not be managed from a Telnet or web browser management session if the remote workstation was communicating with the switch through a tagged port. You also could not ping a switch if the workstation was communicating through a tagged port. Both problems have been resolved. GBIC Auto-Negotiating A GBIC module would periodically fail to auto-negotiate correctly with an end node. This problem has been resolved. GBIC Information Window The GBIC Information window displayed incorrect information. This problem has been resolved. Port Configuration Window The Port Configuration window periodically failed to display all menu options. This problem has been resolved. Operational Notes Invalidate Software Image The Invalidate Software Image in the Administration menu has been removed in version 1.3. The menu option, used to download new software images onto the switch, has been replaced with the new Xmodem File Transfer option. For information on how to download software onto the switch, refer to Chapter 16 in the AT-S39 Version 1.3 User s Guide. Boot Prompt Message During boot up, the switch displays the following prompt: Press any key to stop image loading and go to Boot Prompt. This prompt is intended for manufacturing purposes only. Untagged Ports in VLANs The untagged ports in a deleted VLAN are not returned to the Default VLAN if they are tagged members of other VLANs. PN 613-50301-00 Rev A 3 Allied Telesyn, Inc.

Previous Version 1.1 New Features SNMP This version supports SNMP version 1 and version 2c. The software supports the following Management Information Bases (MIBs): SNMP MIB-II (RFC 1213) Bridge MIB (RFC 1493) Interface Group MIB (RFC 1573) Ethernet MIB (RFC 1643) Remote Network MIB (RFC 1757) Allied Telesyn managed switch MIB IGMP Snooping This version supports IGMP snooping version 1 and version 2. The management software features auto-detection of multicast routers. Additionally, the software features menu options for listing multicast routers and host nodes. Web Browser Management The network administrator can disable web browser management on a switch to increase switch security. Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) This version supports the downloading of AT-S39 image files and switch configuration files using TFTP. AT-S39 Version Number and Switch Serial Number The management software now features a new Diagnostics menu option that displays the following information: AT-S39 version Switch serial number Bootloader version Switch MAC address PN 613-50301-00 Rev A 4 Allied Telesyn, Inc.

Resolved Issues Bridge Protocol Data Units (BPDUs) The switch would drop tagged BPDUs. This problem has been resolved. Port Status Window The Port Status window would periodically display a port s VLAN ID as 0. This problem has been resolved. Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) STP periodically failed to place ports of redundant paths into a blocking state, resulting in network loops. This problem has been resolved. VLAN Menus This version corrects several problems in the VLAN menus and windows. PN 613-50301-00 Rev A 5 Allied Telesyn, Inc.
