The Denver City and County 2013 Industry-Occupational Analysis The Denver City and County 2013 Industry-Occupational analysis utilizes data from BLS, CDLE and EMSI. EMSI uses data from BLS, Census and the BEA for their workforce data. Denver's top employment sector by the numbers is Government, which will not likely be growing over the next few years or for the long term with continued budget pressures. Likewise, some high growth sectors may not be as suited to workforce development programs, such as Mining and Oil and Gas Extraction. Therefore, the factors that the analysis focuses on to select the industry groups are high growth in percentage/absolute terms, number of annual openings, high demand, competitive advantage (location quotient as related to State and Nation), and career path potential. This has resulted in three different types of industry sector groups. Not every occupation meets all the criteria, however, they all do meet some of them and it should be understood that some jobs with negative overall growth still have hundreds of openings every year due to retiring workers. One group would fit all the criteria mentioned above and includes: Finance/Insurance/Real Estate industries, Healthcare and Social Assistance industries, and Professional, Scientific and Technical industries. The second group includes high growth and high demand industries that are not necessarily as high paying and these include Retail Trade industries and Accommodation and Food Services industries which will have continued growth and offer many low skill and/or low experience entry level opportunities. The third group are industries with fewer entry level opportunities, however, they do exist for those who gain the skills or training. These do not have the highest employment levels but are important sectors to the City of Denver and the State of Colorado and are experiencing increased growth and demand. These industries are Energy, Mining and Fossil Fuels industries, Advanced Manufacturing industries, and Information Technology industries. For Workforce Development the occupations that require less than a Bachelor's degree but also pay higher than $15.00 are occupations that can be targeted for career path development. These have been highlighted in yellow when they occur in the top 20 occupations for that particular industry. Occupations with degree requirements can be used for educators and workforce professionals that advise youth, new graduates or unemployed individuals as to what they need to get the job that they want. In the report below, for each industry group the first section contains the top 20 occupations ranked by 2010 jobs. The next page for each group includes a table that highlights the top 5 occupations that pay more than $15/hr and also require 2 years of post-secondary education or less. Data for these occupations is across all industries on these pages and includes earnings, annual openings, age demographics and gender demographics. Then finally, the top 5 requested skills and certifications for the industry group as well as the top 5 hiring employers in Denver, which are from Wanted Analytics are the last three tables listed for each industry group or sector. Analysis Completed May 2013 utilizing BLS, EMSI and CDLE Data 1 / 9
