MSc Mathematics and Comuting for Finance Duration: 1 year full-time Entry Requirements: Minimum of a 2.2 Honours degree, or equivalent, in Mathematics, Comuter Science, Engineering, or equivalent is normally required A score of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent if English is not your first language Course Overview: The MSc Mathematics and Comuting for Finance course has been designed to meet the growing demand for secially trained mathematicians to work in the world s financial markets and insurance. Desite the current volatile nature of the banking industry, many banks still have a ressing need for emloyees with advanced mathematical skills who can further their understanding of turbulence in financial markets. Course Content: As a student on the MSc Mathematics and Comuting for Finance rogramme you will study a range of toics including: Stochastic Calculus based on Brownian Motion Levy rocesses and more general jum rocesses The advanced Black-Scholes theory Theory and numerics of arabolic differential equations Java rogramming Theory of algorithms Internet systems Dissertation: On to of the modules you study, you will also comlete a dissertation as art of your studies. MRes Stochastic Processes Duration: 1 year full-time Entry Requirements: Candidates should normally have a 2.1 Honours Degree or higher in Mathematics (or equivalent) A score of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent if English is not your first language Course Overview: For this rogramme the taught comonent is for 1 semester (60 credits) and the research comonent is for 2 semesters (120 credits). Course Content: As a student on the MRes Stochastic Processes rogramme you will study a range of toics for the taught element including: Stochastic Calculus based on Brownian Motion Levy rocesses and more general jum rocesses The advanced Black-Scholes theory Theory and numerics of arabolic differential equations Java rogramming The MRes in Stochastic Processes is delivered through otional modules for the taught element followed by a large research roject that contributes to the field in an exlicit way, rather than merely alying existing knowledge. 12 Mathematics at Swansea Mathematics at Swansea 12

MSc by Research, MPhil, PhD MSc by Research in Mathematics Entry Requirements: Candidates should normally have a 2.1 Honours Degree or higher in Mathematics (or equivalent) A score of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent if English is not your first language For this rogramme you will be guided by internationally leading researchers through an extended research roject, there is no taught element. The MSc by Research would normally terminate after a year. However, under aroriate circumstances, this first year of research can also be used in a rogression to Year 2 of a PhD degree. On the MSc by Research in Mathematics you will have the oortunity to ursue an individual rogramme of research in a secialist area. Regular discussions between you and your suervisor form the core of the rogramme. You will have the oortunity to benefit from regular Schools and Workshos given by world-class mathematicians and seminars given by staff and research visitors to the Deartment of Mathematics. MPhil and PhD Degrees The Mathematics Deartment is always keen to attract high-quality ostgraduate students to join our research grous. As an MPhil (2 years) or PhD (3 years) student you will be guided by internationally leading researchers and will carry out a large individual research roject. You will be fully integrated into one of our established research grous and articiate in research activities such as seminars, workshos, laboratories, and field work. Research Grous include: Algebra and Toology Grou Areas of interest include: Noncommutative geometry, Categorical methods in algebra and toology, Homotoy theory and homological algebra and others. Analysis and Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations Grou Areas of interest include: Reaction-diffusion and reaction-diffusion-convection equations and systems, Navier-Stokes equations in fluid dynamic, Comlexity in the calculus of variations and others. Stochastic Analysis Grou Areas of interest include: Functional inequalities and alications, Lévy-tye rocesses, Stochastic modelling of fractal, multifractal and multiscale systems, Infinite dimensional stochastic analysis and others. The Mathematics Deartment has 3 main research grous as follows: Algebra and Toology Grou A diverse and active research grou with a number of PhD students, an active weekly seminar, and many international connections and collaborations. Areas of interest include: Algebras of oerations and cooerations for cohomology and K-theory Categorical methods in algebra and toology Homotoy theory and homological algebra Analysis and Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations Grou This grou combines skill in analysis and the theory of nonlinear PDE with comutation exertise. Areas of interest include: Calculus of variations and critical oints theory Morse Theory in nonlinear PDEs Reaction-diffusion equations and systems Stochastic Analysis Grou In the International Review Mathematics U.K. 2010 this grou was flagged u (as in 2004) to contribute significantly to the U.K. s world leader status in Stochastic Analysis. Student View Khalida Inayat Noor PhD in Mathematics 1972 Khalida graduated from Swansea University in 1972, having comleted her PhD in Mathematics. Dr Noor currently works as a rofessor in the Deartment of Mathematics at the COMSATS Institute of Information Technology in Islamabad, Pakistan. COMSATS has been described by the HEC (Higher Education Commission Pakistan) as the to institution for Comuter Sciences and Information Technology. She is resonsible for the MSc and PhD rogramme in the Mathematics Deartment, as well as being an advisor to the Faculty of Female and Students and coordinator of the Foreign Faculty Forum. As well as teaching, Dr Noor has comleted an extensive amount of research and has written a number of research ublications. She has also acted as an editor and reviewer for a variety of international journals. In 2010, Dr Noor was awarded the President s Award for ride of erformance by the President of Pakistan. This is a very restigious award and considered the highest civil award conferred by the Pakistani Government in recognition of distinguished merit. When asked about her favourite memories of Swansea University, she said I enjoyed the friendly attitude of the academia and the community. The University trained me for a research career and heled to develo my confidence. I made many friends and I cherish those sweet memories even now. Rhian Ivey BSc Mathematics 2006 MSc Mathematics and Comuting for Finance 2008 Further to my studies at Swansea University as a Master of Science graduate in Financial Mathematics, I am currently working at Deutsche Bank in London as art of the Structured Financial Services team roviding client services for cororate lending and debt ortfolios. The comlex nature of the course has heled me become a logical decision maker and a highly skilled roblem solver. These transferable skills are very useful in the world of Finance since the role is highly challenging working towards deadlines and structured transaction targets. My studies at Swansea University have also enriched me with leadershi, motivational skills and have enhanced my communication skills. I work in a close team of 10 eole within a large deartment which encourages a culture that strives towards learning and effective teamwork.
