2010 Competition Car Insurance Dunlop Ford Fiesta Championship Race report for: Rounds 1 & 2 Championship Co-ordinator Alexandra Cable Published by Ford Racing UK 2010.

Championship Operational notes There is a new format of splitting the weekend into two halves with Saturdays now being given over to am free practice and pm to qualifying, allowing Sunday to have two races which are filmed for television broadcast. The championship eligibility scrutineer Bob Blackmore was kept on his toes and had to wield the big stick over the weekend. Drivers/teams to note that rear high intensity lights must be fitted and working. Towing eyes. The idea of making the requirement for a strap to be the point of towing is there to alleviate damage to front or rear lower panels when contact is made. The strap should take the element of damage away? Weight and ballast. The championship has a set of certificated scales which will be at every round and will be set up normally at scrutineering. If you wish to use them please ask the Bob (Scutineer). Ballast should be per regulation and in the boot area only. Competitors are again urged to read the published championship regulations which are available for download from www.fordracing.eu website. It is simply not acceptable to profess ignorance when you have signed to the effect that you have read them! Dunlop Tyre truck should be at all rounds bar Cadwell and Anglesey. Please remember that this is a courtesy service extended and not a contractual obligation from HP Tyres. It should be prudent to call them if you need tyres to be taken to a meeting or have them sent to you in good time for your next race meeting. Qualifying A and B 2 P a g e

It was Ed Cockhill who set the pole time with a 49.86. Some 0.023 behind was Tim Bennett and he lined up next to Cockhill on the front row of the grid. Both those are class A competitors but leading class B car was Scott Baines in overall 5 th with a 50.23. Next to him was Harry Cockhill also B, 4/10ths behind pole. Lydden Hill Circuit Length = 1.0000 miles Race 1 (A and B) The opening race of the season got underway and Tim Bennett from the outside made the best start. Ed Cockhill got swamped. Brother Harry Cockhill moved up to 2 nd. Harry was closely followed by Scott Baines, who had a good start, launching down the inside of the track. Baines looked up the inside of Cockhill but thought better of it. Persistent though, Baines managed to just hold onto the car as the back stepped out into the hairpin, thus allowing the front two, Bennett and Toumazos to creep away. Toumazos entered Devils Elbow on the 2 nd lap and the back of the car stepped out causing him a spin. An unfortunate Ed Cockhill collected him causing terminal damage to Toumazos car. The race was then red flagged. This wasn t the only time the red flag was used. After the restart, contact between Rex Nye and another competitor on the exit of North bend left Rex s car tinkering on its side on the inside of the track. For the 3 rd time of asking, the race got underway. Bennett again got away well, with Baines having a look round the outside of Ed Cockhill but thinking better of it. Bennett led as they come down into the Elbow, Ed Cockhill is 2 nd, Baines 3 rd, Harry. Cockhill 4 th and Bateman 5 th. The positions remained the same as they completed the 1 st lap. As the race progressed, further back we saw the action. Eason 3 P a g e

battled with Stirling; Bowers pushed too hard and had a moment narrowly missing the barriers. He unfortunately rejoined last. Fairbairns also overtook Edwards. Bennett now posted the fastest lap with Cockhill close behind. The last lap board was shown. The battle for 3 rd position really hotted up as Baines went defensive, but it was obvious Cockhill wanted 1 st in class. Bumper to bumper they went, as Cockhill squeezed up the inside and Baines went off into the tyres but he managed to rejoin to cross the line 7 th. Start: 15:05 End: 15:26 Race 1 Class C: 5 P a g e The Fiesta drama continued as David Nye stalled on the line; everyone missed him. The cars went four abreast through Chessons drift, but Mark Tilbury was ahead. They completed the first lap. Tilbury led from Tomkins, Bryant and Gumbley (who was 4 th). Nye did well to catch up and was 5 th by the end of lap 2. Nye and Gumbley battled for 4 th position. Nye looked to close the gap between himself and Tilbury. On lap 4 Gumbley and Nye pass Bryant for 3 rd and 4 th. 1 lap later Nye and Bryant overtake Gumbley for 3 rd and 4 th. On lap 6 Scott looked around the outside of Abbott into the elbow, he got ahead but Abbott made a better exit and got back in front. As they enter North Bend, Scott again looked around the outside superb scrap and Scott eventually got ahead of Abbott and went on to hustle Gumbley. Scott went very deep into North Bend to get a run on Gumbley and tried to go around the outside at Paddock but never got ahead. The entertainment continued further down the order as Nick Pope, John Findlay and James Byrne battled for 8 th. Al Daly, Terry Upton, Graham Field and Nick Bowers also raced well. As the race draws to an end Nye looked around the outside of Tomkins, but Tomkins

was having none of it. The battle continued and Nye went up the inside with a do or die move at the elbow and got ahead of Tomkins. Scott and Gumbley were also door handle to door handle with Scott finishing in front. Scott Baines does well he was now up to 3 rd position as they run down towards Devils Elbow. Drama, asjoanne Eason and Michel Edwards have had an incident and go off at North Bend. Edwards retires 2 laps later as Eason is shown the black and orange flag and also adds to the DNFs. As the front runners complete lap 2, it was Bennett, Ed Cockhill, Baines and Bateman in that order.. Bateman however manages to get by on the inside at Pilgrims on lap 4 on a move on H Cockhill. He also got jumped by Fairbairns at the Elbow. Rex Nye was having a great catch up drive. On lap 7 he overtook Bateman for 7 th position. Another driver who started from the back was Chris Toumazos who was having a great race as on lap 7 overtook Fairbairns for 3 rd in class. Bowers was also having a good drive he made a place up at Chessons drift. Zena Cooper overtook Kevin Stirling at Devils Elbow for 9 th overall, and this put a the Si between two Zetecs taking the heat off Bateman. 2 laps later Nye continued to push hard he was very late on the brakes into corners 6 P a g e

Start: 15:38 End: 15:56 Race 2 Class C: A busy moment mid pack at the start, cars off all over the place and a mixed up grid. The front runners got away cleanly though with Bryant getting the best start. Bryant continued to push hard as does Scott who gets a bit sideways on the 1 st lap. It s Gumbley and Bryant who are diced for 3 rd, both door handle to door handle as they came down from North Bend. The leader completes the 1 st lap it was Mark Tilbury from Gordon Tomkins, Rory Bryant and Jeremy Gumbley. David Nye who started at the back was doing well as he had moved up into 5 th with a move up the inside at Devils Elbow. Dave Abbott, who had also started at the back was not doing so well as he pulled off. Tomkins meanwhile is 0.9s behind the leader, but he had to be midful of Bryant who lookeds up the inside and a hint ofdoor rubbing and Tomkins ending up on the grass. Nye sneaked through into 3 rd as Gumbley remained 4 th. 7 P a g e

With all this action going on Tilbury managed to move 2s ahead of 2 nd. Gumbley looked up the inside of Nye but left the door open for Tomkins. Tomkins did not take advantage. Those 3 however gave Bryant a break. He was now able to start to gain on Tilbury. Bryant closed the gap to 1.7s. Abbott rejoined. Nye now started catching Bryant but it was short lived as on lap 11 he dropped down to 5 th and a lap latter he pulled off. Nye rejoined on lap 14. Our attention now turns to the battle between John Findlay and Stewart Scott for 6 th position. Findlay went defensive but the two played fair and Findlay held him off. There is roughly a cars length between them and they seem so evenly matched that Scott is trying his upmost by braking so late into the corners but Findlay continued to hold him off to the flag.
