Life-cycle Assessment of Timber Windows Our conclusions show timber windows, manufactured to the design, materials, quality and process procedures required by the Wood Window Alliance, will achieve a minimum estimated service life of 60 years. With attention to window positioning in building design, location, and adherence to recommended maintenance cycles, estimated service life can be increased significantly; with up to 87 years predicted in sheltered locations with average maintenance levels. - Dr. Richard Murphy. Imperial College London, 2012 Life-cycle Assessment of Genuine Aluminium-clad Timber Windows Results of accelerated testing programme show that aluminium clad timber windows, compared to other windows, have the best resistance against adverse weathering conditions. PVC-U windows have the worst weathering performance... When considering the life-cycle cost of a window over a 40 year period, PVC-U windows are at a considerable disadvantage due to their shorter service life, having to be replaced at least once during the 40 year cycle. The additional costs of this window replacement, when introduced into the Life Cycle Assessment, render them an expensive choice in comparison to timber. - Prof. T Muneer, Dr. M. Asif.
