Phone Guidelines Housing students are expected to provide their own cell phone as phone service is not provided in the dorms. There are phones located in central locations of all buildings for use in an emergency. All major cell phone services are available on campus (AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile) Lipscomb discounts available for AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint See the Discounts & Deals section of http://it.lipscomb.edu Internet phone (Skype) and Apple Facetime are supported 5
Networking The purpose of the network is to support the academic and administrative programs of the university. Dorm network connectivity is available at no charge, but it is subject to the security policies of the university. OpenDNS provides content filtering for pornography, gambling, illegal drugs, etc. For security purposes, the student network is physically separated from the internal network. A firewall restricts access to non-academic services with demonstrated security and/or liability problems, such as IRC, peer-to-peer file sharing, and some gaming. Clearwire has a wireless service in Nashville that offers internet service ($30-50/month). 6
Networking (User Accounts) User accounts are automatically generated for all students. The network user account is used to log onto all Lipscomb resources including my.lipscomb.edu, student email, Blackboard, student wireless network, and campus lab computers. To look up the username or change the password, go to http://passwordreset.lipscomb.edu. Students must have their Lipscomb ID number (i.e. L12345678) in order to use this web service. We require the password to meet strong password requirements but they do not expire. Passwords can be reset at http://passwordreset.lipscomb.edu or using the kiosk in the Computer Center Lobby (bottom floor of Beaman Library - Ezell side) The student must provide a USB flash drive/memory stick to store personal files such as class assignments and papers, or use free cloud services (i.e. Dropbox) Student storage space on Lipscomb s Google Apps service allows for a combined usage of 30 GB of combined mail and file storage. Also great for collaboration. 7
Wireless Student Network (LUStudentNet) Wireless network covers the entire campus, including all green areas. Brand new equipment will be installed campus wide by the beginning of the fall semester. Coverage is 802.11 a/g/n. User authentication is required to connect. Students must set the network password prior to attempting to connect for the first time. Gaming is supported only on the wireless gaming network. Directions for connecting your laptop or game console can be found at http://it.lipscomb.edu. 8
Wireless Student Network (Mobile Devices) Wireless mobile devices are supported on the LUBisonNet wireless network which is designed for use with mobile devices. Supported devices include but are not limited to: Smart phones (iphone, Android devices, etc.) ipad ipod Touch Laptops can also use the LUBisonNet Since Lipscomb email is powered by Gmail, it is also very simple to add the Lipscomb email account to almost any mobile device that supports Gmail access. Simply direct the browser of the device to m.google.com for setup instructions for your device. 9
Networking (Printing) Monochrome Laser printers are available in each dorm lab and computer classroom. Color printers are available in specialty department labs. Pay per print color printers are available outside the Connection (Post Office) & the Library Printers are accessible from school-owned machines and via http://printing.lipscomb.edu for laptop wireless printing. Airprint is also available for ipad printing. 10
Networking (Printing Quotas) Page quotas are in place to reduce waste. Each enrolled student is allocated a $30 quota per semester Monochrome prints $.05 per page Color prints $.50 per page Additional quota can be charged to the student s account at my.lipscomb.edu if needed. Lab computers have a limit of 99 pages per print request. Students can check their remaining quota, see their printing history, and submit a print job from the web at http://printing.lipscomb.edu 11
Networking (Email) Email Accounts An email address is provided in the Lipscomb domain made up of the initials and last name: for example, greenbm@mail.lipscomb.edu. The Lipscomb email account will be the primary method of contact for University information. The email account is a Gmail powered account with 30 GB of combined mail and document storage. The password for the email account is the same as the Lipscomb network password but students will need to enter their full username@mail.lipscomb.edu address in the gmail username field when logging on. 12
