Global Direct-to-Home (DTH) Markets, 5 th Edition Report Briefing

Report Description NSR s Global Direct-to-Home (DTH) Markets, 5th Edition provides an industry-leading assessment of key trends, drivers, and restraints facing the DTH satellite TV market. The study focuses on the DTH satellite TV market through a region-by-region analysis of leading questions facing the industry: Which regions present growth opportunities for Satellite Operators, DTH Platforms, and DTH Equipment Providers? How will Digital Terrestrial Technology (DTT) and Over-the-top (OTT) services impact the DTH Industry s bottom line? Can low ARPU subscribers increase the bottom line in the long run? NEW in this Edition: DTH Subscribers per Satellite Operator Satellite Operator DTH Channel Market Share Satellite Operator Leased Transponder Market share Regions Covered in this Report: North America Central America and Caribbean South America Western Europe Central Europe and Russia Middle East and North Africa Sub-Saharan Africa East Asia South Asia Southeast Asia Going beyond the headlines, the report continues NSR s leading analysis of critical industry benchmarks, such as: TV Households & DTH Subscriber figures from 2011-2021 Regional SAC, ARPU, and Subscription Revenues for DTH Platforms through 2021 SD, HD, 3D Channels & Transponder Demand Trends & Forecasts to 2021

Global Direct to Home Channels, by Resolution 2011 SD Channels 78% HD Channels 22% 3D Channels 0.1% Source: NSR With over 20,000 SD, HD, and 3D channels delivered by over 100 DTH platforms in all corners of the world, content providers continue to demand higher programming fees, economic conditions stagnate in much of the world, and free offerings both online and over the air remain an everpresent threat. In the face of these threats, DTH platforms continue to show positive signs of growth by increasing lease agreements with satellite operators, growing subscriber bases, and rolling out new, innovative technology. Together with these factors, NSR s Global Direct-to-Home (DTH) Markets, 5th Edition report gives readers a complete picture of the DTH marketplace. NSR s Global Direct-to-Home (DTH) Markets, 5th Edition provides a global perspective, with detailed region-centric analysis. Building on NSR s previous experience, the 5th Edition provides new segmentation and analysis from the satellite operator perspective, providing a complete space-to-ground coverage of the global satellite television marketplace. The report uses NSR s Bottom-Line approach to sift through the latest developments in the DTH market, to give reader s qualitative analysis, backed by quantitative figures, to understand the current and future direction of this significant component of the satellite communications sector.

Report Summary NSR s Global Direct-to-Home (DTH) Markets study, in its 5 th Edition, continues to track the major developments and questions facing the DTH industry: Which regions present growth opportunities for satellite operators, DTH platforms, and DTH equipment providers? How will Digital Terrestrial Technology (DTT) and Over-the-top (OTT) services impact the DTH industry s bottom line? Can low ARPU subscribers increase the bottom line in the long run? What impacts will the move to HD have on leasing revenues, channel figures, total subscribers, and ARPUs? Answering these questions, NSR explores the latest developments from every region and every major DTH platform. Combined with qualitative and quantitative information, NSR s Global Direct-to-Home (DTH) Markets, 5 th Edition study provides readers an in-depth look at the data behind the latest developments in the DTH space. Primary Findings Rapid subscriber acquisition programs into lower income brackets have done the most to shape the DTH industry over the past few years. Going forward, this trend will be replaced with the slow roll-out of HD channels, consolidations and market entries, subscriber base building and value-added services maximization, and operating expense minimization. NSR s key findings in NSR s Global Direct-to-Home Markets, 5 th Edition report: 5 New DTH platforms will enter the market in the next 10 years, as consolidation in the near-term is replaced by long term platform creation, with a net gain of 2 platforms. The average number of Channels per DTH Platform will increase from 209 in 2011 to 313 in 2021. 74% of channels in 2021 will be SD, 25% will be HD, and less than 1% will be 3D. UltraHD still remains a long term proposition for the time being. Total subscription revenue will increase from $79.3B in 2011 to $123.0B in 2021. North America will account for 48% of total subscription revenues in 2011, but will lower to 39% by 2021 based on growth in the rest of the world. Average profit margins per DTH platform will decrease from 17% in 2011 to 15.8% in 2021, yet profits will increase from $0.23 B to $0.29B.

The View from Above North America will dominate total DTH channels, but will lose market share throughout the forecast period, declining from 53% of all DTH channels to 43% of all global channels. North America will still gain the most DTH channels, but Central and Eastern Europe will gain 1,837 channels over the next ten years. Channels or Subscribers? DTH Channels 3,500 3,000 2,500 2,000 1,500 1,000 500 Global DTH Channels by Top 11 Orbital Locations, 2011 3D Channels HD Channels SD Channels 13 19.2 36 91.5 241 241.2 250 259 265 269 298.5 Source : NSR EchoStar s and DirecTV s position at 241 Degrees and 250 Degrees carry the most DTH channels in the world, and yet, the majority of channels remain SD-based. In fact, EchoStar and DirecTV account for 5 of the Top 11 DTH Orbital locations. Ciel Satellite s slot at 231 (which provides content exclusively to DishNetwork), fills out the top 6, as North American DTH channels account for the top 6 DTH orbital slots. Only EchoStar s 298.5 Degrees slot (which provides the bulk of the networks HD capacity) has a large share of HD channels. Eutelsat s 36 Degrees slot is the top commercial DTH orbital location outside of North America with Eutelsat W4 and W7 satellites being key to this position. Ignoring the North American market entirely, Eutelsat appears 4 out of 11 times in terms of top orbital slots. However, simply having some of the most popular DTH orbital locations does not mean one carries the most DTH channels. In fact, SES carries slightly more channels as of 2011 than Eutelsat in the DTH market.

30% Satellite Operators in Top 11 Orbital Locations, Channels and Subscribers Market Share, 2011 25% Chls Subs 20% 15% 10% 5% 0% Source : NSR And yet, channels are only one measure. Eutelsat and SES both beat out DirecTV in terms of coverage of the DTH market when looking from subscriber metrics. Intelsat trails only slightly behind DirecTV, ironically, helped by DirecTV s Latin American and Sky Brazil subsidiaries. Overall, the picture of importance to the DTH market (from the satellite operator s perspective) is more complex than simple channel counts, and when measuring subscribers, a few satellite operators can beat-out the massive channels carried by the dedicated North American DTH satellite fleet.... But What about Revenues? Debates about channels, or subscribers aside, leasing revenues for DTH capacity will rise significantly by 2021. Ku-band will continue to dominate, with some potential growth for HTS leasing revenue in Western Europe and Central and Eastern Europe, in addition to North America. C-band continues to remain a niche offering throughout the forecast period. Overall, The View from Above is: DTH platforms are carrying more channels, even with adopting new compression technologies across the globe. Capacity leased for SD channels will gain more than leased capacity for HD channels in almost all regions, except North America, Western Europe, Middle East and North Africa, and East Asia. SD channels continue to generate more revenue than HD or 3D channels for satellite operators, both in gains and in overall number

Notably absent from the picture below are Central or South American platforms. Although they continue to expand their base, and by 2021 the region will add another 13.1 million subscribers, in 2011 the platforms ranked just outside the top 11 at 12, 13, and 15 th position. By 2021, the Top 11 DTH platforms will favor those in the developing markets today India, Central and Eastern Europe, and South America will move to replace DirecTV, Dish Networks, and Sky UK. However, channels and subscribers remain only part of the picture. Total revenues will add $43.7 billion between 2011 and 2021, with gains at the top from DVR subscribers, and gains at the bottom from SD subscribers contributing the most to overall subscription revenue gains.

Viewing the market through subscription revenues, those same platforms that by 2021 will no longer have the most subscribers will still generate the most revenues. North America, Western Europe, and Southeast Asia will be the top 3 markets for subscription revenues throughout the forecast period. Overall, the view from the bottom is: Except for North America and Western Europe, SD revenues will gain more than HD or DVR revenues on a region-by-region basis. Average channels per platform will continue to increase, with a focus still on SD channels. Bottom Line Bottom line, the largest commercial market for satellite capacity (DTH) continues on a growth path from 2011 to 2021: More channels, more SD content, and more capacity all boost leasing revenues. Low-end subscriber growth and high-end value-added services contribute the most to the global bottom line. Slightly more platforms, but more channels per platform. Slightly worse profit margins, but better overall profits.
