2 02 I SATELLITE SOLUTIONS FOR AFRICA SATELLITE SOLUTIONS FOR AFRICA I 03 eutelsat leading satellite operator in Africa/Indian Ocean, Europe and the Middle East One of the largest satellite fleets worldwide With 28 satellites concentrated on a quarter of the geostationary orbit between the 15 degrees West and 70.5 degrees East locations, Eutelsat provides its customers in Africa with first rate satellite resources to accompany the growth of digital television, mobile communications and broadband access throughout the entire continent. Combining technical excellence and innovation, Eutelsat has gained the trust of a group of anchor customers, broadcasters, telecoms operators, Internet service providers, humanitarian agencies and governmental organizations all over Africa. For several million households, our satellites provide a privileged source of access to public and private television services. For thousands of companies, they also mean an opening onto the world and competitiveness. Sometimes, they provide the only way of setting up a communications network, or of restoring it in an emergency. As a historical partner of the leading operators, committed to developing universal access to the main digital networks, Eutelsat is putting into place exceptional means to accompany growth in these markets. Six satellites are currently under construction, three of which have capacity dedicated to Sub-Saharan Africa, and two others capacity optimised for North Africa.
3 04 I BROADCAST AND TELECOM SERVICES BROADCAST AND TELECOM SERVICES I 05 eutelsat serving African and the Indian Ocean TELECOM SOLUTIONS Eutelsat is witnessing strong growth in: Mobile services VSAT: 9% average annual growth for corporate networks Backhaul applications: 14% average annual growth Oil & Gas sector: transition from low-bandwidth voice traffic to more bandwidth-hungry applications including video and data Fibre back-up links in both Ku- and C-band. Satellite is confidently expected to remain the only solution for the millions of African customers who will not be served by submarine cables. BROADCAST SOLUTIONS DTH TV reception is mainly DTH and terrestrial in Sub- Saharan Africa and the Indian Ocean. Strong growth is being experienced in the DTH market, both in SD and HD. Eutelsat is the leading operator for DTH broadcasting in these regions, via two flagship satellite neighbourhoods: 36 degrees East (EUTELSAT 36A + 36B): MultiChoice Africa launched in 2000 on Eutelsat, pionner pay-tv platform in Africa. Broadcasting 195 channels in March Services extended to additional countries with EUTELSAT 36B. 16 degrees East (EUTELSAT 16A): 130+ French-language TV channels for audiences in Africa/Indian Ocean Key customers (Parabole Réunion, Canal+ Overseas, Orange, France Télévisions...)) broadasting to the Indian Ocean islands. New pay-tv and FTA offers over Sub-Saharan Africa DTT Most African countries have signed up to the ITU global deadline for analogue terrestrial switch-off by June 2015 Strong growth expected in the DTT sector Eutelsat has significant experience/potential for DTT solutions and is a major provider of DTT services over Africa. BROADBAND SOLUTIONS With 600+ million inhabitants, a steady GDP growth of 7%/year and only 2% of households equipped with a telephone line, demand for efficient broadband connections is higher than ever in Sub-Saharan Africa. Spring 2012: Eutelsat is introducing IP Easy, a simple and affordable two-way broadband access solution for SOHOs and SMEs, available from Senegal to Madagascar. Fully independent from terrestrial connections, this new platform is routed via Ku-band capacity on the EUTELSAT 16A satellite at 16 degrees East. IP Easy will be gradually extended to areas not served by EUTELSAT 16A. 16 EAST TRIPLE-PLAY READY WITH EUTELSAT IP EASY Broadband Internet access FTA and pay-tv packages at 16 East VoIP WITH ONE SINGLE DISH
4 06 I BROADCAST AND TELECOM SERVICES I 07 Solutions for the Indian Ocean Region SATELLITES IN SERVICE: EUTELSAT 16A (KU BAND), EUTELSAT 10A (KU BAND) AND EUTELSAT 5 WEST A (C BAND) 52 db/w 50 db/w 48 db/w 46 db/w 44 db/w 42 db/w 40 db/w 52 dbw 40 dbw on EUTELSAT 10A at 1 East 1 Indian Ocean Africa Ku-band downlink coverage for Eutelsat 16A 16 East Eutelsat has been actively involved in the Indian Ocean islands' broadcast market for almost fifteen years. Starting in 1998 on the W2 satellite, Eutelsat s first spacecraft to provide commercial services in the southern hemisphere, the company offered Ku-band capacity from 16 degrees East for broadcasting applications (DTH, TV distribution and radio) in Madagascar, Mauritius, the Comores islands, Mayote and Reunion From the outset, high-power spotbeams, which deliver exceptionally high performance, were dedicated to this region. Currently served by the brand new EUTELSAT 16A satellite, launched in October 2011, 16 degrees East is one of the major broadcasting hotspots developped by Eutelsat. Our company was a pioneer of Ku-band applications in the Indian Ocean region and successfully demonstrated the technical feasibility as well as the operational and commercial advantages of using this frequency band. As a result, Eutelsat has built up a strong and stable portfolio of anchor customers (Parabole Réunion, Canal + Overseas, Orange, France Télévisions...) in the broadcasting sector and is a recognized leader in the regional market. More recently, Eutelsat also made available satellite capacity in C-band for TV distribution services as well as telecommunications / Internet applications from 5 degrees West and 10 degrees East. C-band has been widespread in tropical and sub-tropical regions since the advent of satellite communications, and this offer complements Eutelsat s portfolio of Ku-band solutions. Telecommunication/Internet services can also be routed in Ku-band via the EUTELSAT 7A satellite at 7 degrees East. Finally, in response to specific requests from the market, Eutelsat now offers an inclined orbit service in Ku-band via the EUTELSAT 16B satellite, for the back-up of fibre terrestrial networks. In early 2013 and early 2014, Eutelsat will launch two new satellites to be located at 7 degrees East (EUTELSAT 7B) and 3 degrees East (EUTELSAT 3B) which will feature enhanced Ku-band and C-band coverage of the Indian Ocean region. 39 dbw 38 dbw 36 dbw 34 dbw 32 dbw 30 dbw C-band coverage on EUTELSAT 5 WEST A at West 1
5 08 I BROADCAST AND TELECOM SERVICES BROADCAST AND TELECOM SERVICES Eutelsat IP Easy Boosting broadband growth in Sub-Saharan Africa Africa and more particularly, central Africa, is the region where the immediate need for broadband connection is the most crucial in the world and where terrestrial networks are least capable of achieving it. TRIPLE-PLAY READY Internet TV packages at 16 East VoIP On a continent with more than 600 million inhabitants and a steady GDP growth of 7% per year, small enterprises and individuals in Africa increasingly need to be connected to the world with real broadband. In some countries, the broadband market (outside mobile telephony) is expected to grow by more than 24% per year and very similar growth rates are forecast in neighbouring countries. Despite the increase in the number of submarine cable connections and the advent of WACS and ACE, the request for reliable Internet connectivity (mainly towards Europe and North America) is huge. Fixed telephone lines (including wireless CDMA) still only serve less than 2% of households, and connections to international backbones, both within big cities and in more remote areas, remain restricted. This means there is significant opportunity for satellite links. Africa cannot afford to wait; people need to be connected now, wherever they are. This is possible. With IP Easy in Ku-band. The IP easy service is being deployed by Eutelsat in most of the African continent, mainly through its EUTELSAT 16A satellite, from its Skylogic Mediteraneo teleport in southern Europe. IP Easy helps companies and consumers in Africa to hook up with the rest of the world. With a 1 meter dish and a PC-connected modem, SME/SOHOs and residential customers can be connected immediately to Internet irrespective of location. Quality of service is guaranteed and provides identical support for business-critical applications requiring a highly reliable infrastructure, to deliver a transparent and high speed broadband connection. The cost of the end-user terminal is kept below today s most competitive satellite systems available on the market. Additionally, the installation of the antenna is so simple that it can be performed without the need for costly specialised installers, and the terminal requires no configuration at all, further reducing the initial investment for each new site. For maximum bandwidth efficiency, the terminal incorporates numerous advanced features such as DVB-S2 modulation and coding, rain fade countermeasures, end-toend Quality of Service (QoS) mechanisms and state-of-the-art acceleration and compression technologies.
