ARCON Reacts Quickly for Increased Personnel and System Protection Damage you can guard against Even with the highest level of production quality, the testing of switchgear assemblies and switching devices and a fully developed system technology, the occurrence of arc faults in low-voltage power distribution systems can never be fully prevented. Arc faults occur if the insulation between the conductors or between the conductors and earth drops to an impermissible level. Frequent sources of danger include: handling and operating errors damage to the insulation formation of bridges between conductor paths due to small parts or tools that have been forgotten contamination or animals later increase of power demand without adapting the system The resulting damage can be devastating. In between 10 and 20 milliseconds, a temperature of up to 20,000 C can develop in the core of the arc fault, which simultaneously creates an explosive pressure that often causes the switchboard itself to explode. Any person in the vicinity is exposed to considerable danger, and the repair of the power distribution system involves a long period of downtime. ARCON for a rapid and extremely reliable response Fibre optic light sensors detect the light emitted by the arc fault. The arc fault current is measured by using a current transformer. The evaluation unit registers both values at the same time, and if necessary, activates two switch elements simultaneously. The quenching device and the upstream circuit-breaker that is connected in parallel the quenching unit uses it pyrotechnically driven gas actuator to initiate a bolted short-circuit. This quenches the arc fault in less than 2 ms from its arising. The system is also disconnected via the circuit-breaker from the supply. After a brief inspection, rectification of the cause of arcing, exchange the quenching device and a final insulation test, your system is again ready for operation.
