ServiceLearninginNicaragua InMay2010threesecondyeargraduatestudents,BriannaLewis,EllenOseiand ElizabethCohenparticipatedintheNicaraguaServiceLearningelectivecourse.The focusoftheelective,whichtookplaceinmanagua,nicaragua,wastoprovide educationalandtechnicalsupporttothe familiesandstaffatthelospiptoscenter.thestaffatlos Piptosidentifiedaneedtofurtherdevelopandexpandtheir knowledgeandskillrepertoireinmeetingtheneedsof childrenwithbehavioralconditionsandtheirfamilies. PartiallyfundedbyandincollaborationwithGlobalHealth Partners, theotstudentsassisteddebtupeinthe developmentoftheprogramcurriculum,ledsmallgroup discussion,anddemonstratedoccupationaltherapy interventionsandtechniques. Cuba WhenDebTupefirstwenttoCuba,littledidsheknowthatshewouldbemaking numerousfollowguptrips,eventuallycenteringherdoctoraldissertationthere. HerinitialjourneystoCubaweretoconducteducationalexperiencesforOTfaculty andstudentsfromthomasjeffersonuniversity,whereshewasafacultymember,andthenwithfaculty andstudentsfromcolumbia.theseexperiencesandtherelationshipsheforgedwithelcentrode RehabilitacionyNeurodesarrollo,inCardenas,ledtoresearchsheconductedonThe$Lived$Experience$ of$caring:$structure,$context$and$typologies.$ DebwasaskedtoreturntoCubaandpresentaScientificSessionatElCentrodeRehabilitaciony Neurodesarrollo.Thesessionisopentophysicians,neonatologists,educators,andtheCenter sstaffof rehabilitationpersonnel.thesessionfocusesonthefindingsfrom thecollaborativestudyfromelcentro,andcoverstheresultsofthe surveyofmothers perspectivesoftheserviceselcentroprovides, howmothersandtherapistsinteractduringtreatmentsessions,the mothers narrativesthatfocusontheirunderstandingoftheir children sdisabilities,andtheactionstheytakeinordertoacquire resourcesandservicesincuba.
