3 What is Occupational Therapy? Occupation: Activity in which one engages Therapy: Treatment of an illness or disability bl Skills for the job of living.

4 What is Occupational Therapy? Occupational Therapy Services Occupational Therapy Services are provided for the purpose of promoting health and wellness who have or are at risk for developing disease, illness, injury impairment, or limitations of participation.

5 What is Occupational Therapy? The purpose of working with individuals or groups is to improve participation in roles and situations stuato sin the home, work place, school, community and other settings. Occupational therapy addresses the psychosocial, physical, cognitive and performances to support engagement in everyday activities.

6 History of Occupational Therapy The theory was adapted from the Arts and Crafts Movement in In 1917, The National Society for the Promotion of Occupational Therapy was formed. Occupational Therapy Services were first recognized in the early 1920 s post World War I.

7 History of Occupational Therapy Dr. William Rush Dunton, Jr. is considered the father of OT. He was a psychiatrist who introduced arts atsand dcatsto crafts to psychiatric c patients in the early 1910 s. Eleanor Clarke Slagle is often referred to as the mother of OT. In 1912 she began directing an OT department in Baltimore. Her home was the first headquarters of what was to become AOTA.

9 Occupational Therapy Practitioner Levels There are two levels of clinicians: The Occupational Therapist requires a Master s Degree. The Occupational Therapy Assistant requires an Associate Degree.

10 Stark State OTA Education Program Occupational Therapy Assistant Program is a two year program at Stark State Technical College. The program covers educational aspects in science, behavior, biological, sociology, and medicine. The program then concentrates on the lifespan development of specific skills and problem solving approach relying on critical thinking.

12 Psychosocial Aspects of OT What Is It? Treatment for individuals with psychological or social problems May include emotional, cognitive or personality disorders Problems may be caused by Inability to cope with stress Biochemical imbalance Disease Environmental factors Problems may affect thinking, memory, judgment and self concept

13 Psychosocial Aspects of OT Includes: Introduction to various health promoting and inhibiting factors Provides training related to one on one and group treatment for individuals with psychiatric or social impairments Promoting psychological well being Enhancing occupational performance

14 Developmental Aspects of OT What is it? Treatment for individuals with developmental delays, severe physical or cognitive disability that limits function Addresses Inability to take care of own needs Lack of life skills Poor interpersonal skills Failure to properly adapt to environmental changes Inability to independently function Improper or detrimental behavior patterns

15 Developmental Aspects of OT Includes: Identification and description of handicapping conditions existing from birth or through adulthood Instruction in occupational therapy theories and treatments for individuals with developmental and learning impairments Emphasis on therapeutic techniques to enhance occupational performance from birth through adulthood

16 Physical Dysfunction Aspects of OT What is it? Treatment of medical problems caused by Disease Disorder or trauma Loss of sensation Limitation in movement Pain Damage to body systems Neuromuscular disorders

17 Physical Dysfunction Aspects of OT Includes: Instruction in occupational theories Assessment screening Emphasis on use of therapeutic activities to Restore Maintain Facilitate Physical well being Independence Treatment for individuals Physical impairments High risk medical conditions

18 Conclusion Occupational therapy practioners are involved with assisting individuals d in improving their mobility and social skills primarily work with patients who have been injured, have a mental disability, or have a physical disability help these patients learn basic skills so they can live independently
