Camden Community Conversation Vibrancy Survey Results May 21, 2009 Prepared by Friends of Midcoast Maine For the Citizens of Camden Electronic survey and analysis by Jane Lafleur and Deborah Dodge. May 2009 Page 1

On Sunday, May 3, 2009, over 50 people assembled in the Camden Public Library Picker Room to discuss community and economic vibrancy in Camden, Maine. The meeting was facilitated by Friends of Midcoast Maine s Executive Director Jane Lafleur, on the request of several community members. As a result of small group discussions and writing all ideas on sticky-notes, several steps toward developing a community vision were made. Three questions were posed to the participants: 1) What do you like about Camden? 2) What should be changed in Camden? 3) What actions should be taken to protect the things you have or create what we want? Participants used the sticky note method to record ALL ideas and multiples of ideas that came up. No idea was changed or lost. Using www.wordle.net a graphic was developed capturing the ideas of the group illustratively. Visit http://www.wordle.net/gallery/wrdl/807895/camden_maine to view the graphic of what we like and value about Camden. It is also shown on page 16. Due to time constraints, Friends of Midcoast Maine offered to develop an on-line survey to help prioritize the hundreds of ideas that were offered by the group. Over the weeks from May 8, 2009 to May 20, 2009, the survey was available on line and 121 people began the survey; 97 (80%) completed the survey after starting it. Given the small sample size, these results are not statistically significant and are not conclusive. They are anecdotal and illustrative but the intent is that they will be used to begin to inform the discussions in the community about a future vision for the town and how the town can grow and change without losing the unique quality of this place. The answers to the survey are represented two ways. First is a table showing the answers ranked in order based on each answer s average rating The lower the average rating, the higher (the more important) the ranking. The second graphic is a chart showing how many first place (the most important) votes each answer received. Electronic survey and analysis by Jane Lafleur and Deborah Dodge. May 2009 Page 2
