Figure 1 Figure 2 Figure 3 Figure 4 special end fittings are easy to install and conceal. Assemblies begin with the Threaded Terminal fitting already fastened to one end of the cable. Attach the fitting to an end post using a flat washer and special washer-nut and adjust tension in the line by turning the nut. This fitting is available in two sizes: 7 1 /2 for wood posts and 4 1 /4 for metal posts. The other end uses the new all stainless QuickConnect-SS fitting, hand attached in the field without special tools. One-way jaws allow the cable to easily slide through the fitting in one direction but automatically grab and lock-on when the cable is released. Just slip the cable through, pull it tight, cut off the excess. Colored end caps give a clean finish. custom cable assemblies Custom Cables & Hardware include a variety of cable and fitting options for fabricating custom assemblies to meet your specific and unique design and function needs. cable assemblies are designed for railing, fence and trellis infill only and should never be used for lifting, hanging or other high-load applications. Visit us online at www.geobezdan.com. Email your questions to info@geobezdan.com. There are two types of cable fittings Fixed Ends are non-adjustable end termination fittings that have no tensioning capabilities. Therefore each Fixed End must be paired with a Tension Adjustment Fitting. Tension Adjustment Fittings include Threaded Terminals and Turnbuckles that are used to tighten the cable lines. Tension is adjusted by tightening the nuts on the Threaded Terminal fittings or by spinning the tubular bodies on the Turnbuckles. Every cable assembly must have at least one Tension Adjustment Fitting. Fittings can be attached to the cable either at the factory or in the field. M Machine Swaging (sw aj ing) Machine swage fittings are attached to the cable during manufacturing using a hydraulic cold forming press. The finished swaged area has a hexagonal shape. Machine swaged assemblies are fabricated to your exact lengths and ship ready for installation. Fixed End Fixed End Most fittings shown here are available to accept 1 /8, 3 /16 OR 1 /4 cable. Email your questions to info@geobezdan.com. 4X6 Wood 3 1 /2 wide, 5 1 /2 thick Spacing From Walls: Unless using Surface Mount or Jaw type cable fittings, always set end posts 3 to 4 inches away from the house/ wall face to allow access for attaching cable end fittings. End Posts: Use minimum end post sizes noted above and securely bolt or lag to joists or deck surface. MAX 3 FEET maximum post spacing: Space all posts and vertical spacers (see below) a maximum of 3 feet apart to minimize any deflection that may occur if the cables are ever forced apart. Minimum sizes for all corner and end posts All other posts should be sized as required for cap rail support strength or for code FLAT BAR 2 wide, 1 thick angle iron 2 wide, 1 /2 thick intermediate posts: Size all intermediate posts as required for cap rail support strength or for code. Frame Design Frames need to support the tension of properly installed cables. Frames need to be designed and built strong enough to support a load of at least 300 lbs for each cable. To ensure proper tensioning, straight runs of cable (no turns, dips or rises) should include a Tension Adjustment Fitting at least every 50 feet. Runs with bends or corners should have a Tension Adjustment Fitting at least every 40 feet or after every second corner (whichever distance is shorter). Here are some basic guidelines to help you prepare railing frames for cable infill. The Basic Frame Design And Some Other Options extra strong pipe 1 1 /2 ID, 1 7 /8 OD cap rail: Always include a strong, rigid cap rail that is securely fastened to all posts. Cap size is based on load strength needs and local code requirements. Set railing height per local code. square tube 2 wide, 1 /4 wall cable spacing: Maximum 3 inches apart. Wood Blocking: (WOOD FRAMES ONLY) Underneath the cap rail attach minimum 1 x 4 size wood blocking between posts to provide additional lateral reinforcement. double corner posts: If possible use double corner posts to allow the cable to run continuously through the corners without terminating (see Single Corner Post option below). Securely bolt or lag posts to joists or deck surface and use minimum corner post sizes noted above. vertical spacers (optional): Slender spacers may be used instead of some of the larger intermediate posts to achieve a more open railing design. These are non-structural members and are only intended to maintain cable spacing and minimize deflection. Use 2 x 2 wood strips, 1 metal tubing or 1 /4 flat bar and attach to the cap rail and either the foot rail, deck surface or joists. cable spacing: Maximum 3 inches apart (see tech. note on page 10). Supply Option The frame designs outlined here are to assist you when constructing your own railing. Alternatively we can supply a complete railing package. Our aluminum railing system is available in a variety of powder coated finishes and is supplied with aluminum posts and top rail (or you can supply a wood top rail to our aluminum frame). To receive a quotation, please forward your drawings marked to the attention of Estimating. Important Note These installation suggestions are not intended for use as recommendations for installing cable rail to meet with local, provincial or national building codes and do not ensure compliance with these codes. Always consult with your local building department before starting your project. MAX 3 FEET Foot rails (optional): Foot rails should be spaced no more than 4 inches above the deck surface, or as required by local code, and should be sized as needed for support strength and design appearance. single corner post (optional): In most cases with single corner posts cables must be terminated. Exceptions are angle iron posts or tubular metal posts. When terminating on a single corner post, be sure to offset the drill holes at least 1 /2 to allow internal clearance for the cable fittings. Use minimum end post sizes noted above and securely bolt or lag to joists or deck surface. Web 12/2011 Vancouver, BC Stratford, ON 9

The Drill Measurements below are for Standard Cable Assemblies only. For Custom Hardware, please call for information for the Drill Hole sizes required for installation. DRILL HOLES DRILL HOLES DRILL HOLES 3 /8 1 /4 5 /16 9 /16 1 /4 3 /8 9 /16 5 /16 7 /16 QuickConnect Intermediate Terminal Post Posts Post 1 /8 : the most popular and cost-effective option. Ideal for all residential and lightcommercial projects. Suitable for wood or metal frames. QuickConnect Intermediate Terminal Post Posts Post 3 /16 : extra durable option for commercial and residential settings. Suitable for wood or metal frames. QuickConnect Intermediate Terminal Post Posts Post 1 /4 : the most durable option for high traffic, high wear commercial locations or where the look of a larger cable is desired. Suitable for metal railing frames only. Spacing of Railing Infill Cables It is recommended that the infill cables be spaced at 3" apart even though the National Building Code allows for openings up to a maximum of 4" so as to prevent the passage of a sphere 4" or more in diameter. Since cables are semi-flexible, it is necessary to allow for the possibility of cable deflection when designing a railing. This is done by spacing not only the cables but also the posts (or vertical members) such that the cables will not open past the four inch requirement when a reasonable force is applied. From experience, manufacturers have determined that when the cables are spaced no more than three inches apart and the posts or vertical members are spaced no more than three feet apart, one can easily tighten the cable such that they will comply with the four inch code rule. These spacing recommendations will apply regardless of the cable diameter being used. Always consult with your local building department before starting your project. Care & Maintenance The protective chromium oxide film on the surface of stainless steel gives it superior corrosion resistance. Properly maintained stainless steel provides excellent luster, strength and durability. In most applications stainless steel won t rust or stain even after many years of service, but it s NOT rust or stain proof. When stainless comes in contact with chloride salts, sulfides or other rusting metals, it can discolor or even rust and corrode. With proper care and maintenance, however, stainless steel can remain beautiful and functional for years to come, even when it s exposed to marine environments, polluted surroundings, salted highways, or anywhere it might be exposed to corrosive elements. Working environments will always create aggressive conditions, and proper cleaning must always be done immediately after installation. Clean your railing thoroughly after initial installation with warm water and household soap (such as dish soap). Rinse thoroughly with fresh water. You can follow with a protective cleaner such as a marine polish. Continue to clean stainless regularly with soap and warm water. Never clean with mineral acids or bleaches. The frequency of cleaning can be determined by; a) if the railing looks dirty; b) if you wish to restore it to its original appearance. A good rule of thumb is to clean it when you clean other adjacent surfaces such as the deck. Never leave stainless in contact with iron, steel or other metals. This can cause rust spots or corrosion. Always remove stains or rust spots as soon as possible with either soap and water or a brass, silver, stainless or chrome cleaner. Never use coarse abrasives like sandpaper or steel wool on stainless. Use synthetic Scotch pads instead. Periodically inspect cable assemblies for proper tension and re-tension as necessary. This is important. To order, contact us by phone 1-800-663-6356 or fax 604-299-5464. Taking cable run measurements when using Standard Assemblies While there certainly is room for fudging, its always best to measure your railing sections as accurately as possible when calculating the run lengths for cable assemblies. The Standard Assemblies are sold in pre-fabricated lengths (in increments of 5-feet) that can be trimmed to exact length in the field, so there is some flexibility. Typically we recommend that you measure your railing frame from outside face to outside face of the end posts (the posts where you will be attaching your fittings), and then add one foot to that length. Then select a cable assembly that is at least as long as that total dimension. 10 Vancouver, BC Stratford, ON Web 12/2011
