In the Netherlands, children usually go to primary school after their fourth birthday. After primary school pupils move on to secondary education. The complete education takes place from the age of 5 until the age of 16 years. After the age of 16 a student is partly obliged to follow compulsory education until the age of 18. This means that the student must have a basic qualification (MBO level 2 certificate or higher) to be free of compulsory education. Students between the ages of 19 and 23 years must have a qualification. This means that the educational institution at which the student is studying, is obliged to do its utmost to certify these students at least on an MBO level 2. Education is part of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. VWO (Atheneum, gymnasium) Pre-university education or VWO is the highest level of secondary education in the Netherlands. A completed preuniversity education provides access to further study at the Dutch HBO and Dutch academic education. The VWO lasts 6 years (age: 12-18 years) and consists of Atheneum and Gymnasium. Approximately 20% of primary school pupils attend VWO. Senior secondary vocational education (MBO) Most vocational trainings such as construction, engineering, healthcare, social professions and economic occupations are being taught at Regional Training Centres (ROCs). These trainings fall under the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. Green programs (agriculture, horticulture, forestry, nutrition, animal care) are given at Agricultural Training Centers or AOCs. They fall under responsibility of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality. There are also course settings; they provide vocational training in an industry (e.g. graphic design). Besides public and private institutions financed by the ministries, there are also numerous private institutions which can emit recognized vocational qualifications. Institutes for hairdressing and beauty training in particular are often privately run. Primary education Primary education has eight grades. Secondary education After completing primary school pupils (usually around the age of 12) move on to secondary education. There are different levels of secondary education: VMBO VMBO, like HAVO and VWO, follows directly after primary school and lasts for four years (age: 12-16 years). In the Netherlands, more than 60 percent of all pupils in secondary education attend VMBO. HAVO Senior general secondary education (often abbreviated as HAVO), is the second highest level of secondary education in the Netherlands.
Higher professional education (HBO) HBO courses are provided by higher educational institutions. They educate in management positions in business and government. Unlike universities, higher education colleges are primarily aimed at the development of skills that are closely connected to the professional enviroment. University (WO) A university is an institution of higher education, scientific research and academic training courses and grants academic degrees. Nowadays Dutch and Flemish Universities offer bachelor's and master's degrees.
