International Leader Training Program for Sustainable Use of Water and Resources Background: City of Kitakyushu (Red: Establishment Blue: awards) 1960s Kitakyushu became one of the 4 heavy industrial zones and experienced pollution problems 1971 Founded Environmental Pollution Control Bureau (currently the Environment Bureau) 1980 Founded Kitakyushu International Techno-cooperative Association (KITA) 1992 UN Local Government Honor at Earth Summit (Rio de Janeiro): International Environmental Cooperation 1997 Started Kitakyushu Eco-Town (Eco-industrial complex, approved by METI) 2001 Founded Kitakyushu Science and Research Park and Faculty of Environmental Engineering 2002 Founded Kitakyushu Environment Museum (environmental education center) 2008 Selected as Eco-Model City 2010 Founded Water Plaza Kitakyushu 2011 Selected as one of the four model cities for OECD Green Cities Programme 2011 100th Anniversary of Kitakyushu Water Works 2011 Selected as Future City under Future City Initiative (approved by Japan s Cabinet) SUW Program Objective To nurture "environmental leaders" with practical knowledge and skills on water and resource recycling; such human resource are urgently demanded especially by Asian developing countries; under strong coordination among the University of Kitakyushu, City of Kitakyushu as "Environmental Model City" and profitable/non-profitable organizations around Kitakyushu with the experience of overcoming pollution problems.
