Lane was born on the West Side of Chicago in 1927. She received her diploma in Nursing from St. Joseph Hospital in 1954; in addition she earned a Public Health Certificate from the University of Chicago. She worked as a staff nurse at St. Joseph's as well as for the Chicago Board of Health from 1954 to 1957. In 1956 she completed a Bachelor's of Nursing degree at DePaul University, and then began teaching nursing at South Chicago Community Hospital in 1957. Following her Master's of Science in Nursing from Catholic University of America in 1960, she became the Director of Nursing Education at South Chicago Community Hospital. Julia Lane began her career at Loyola University in 1963 as an assistant professor in the Department of Maternal and Child Health. She became the Director of the Graduate Program in Nursing in 1971 and in 1974 she was named acting dean of the School of Nursing. During this time Lane completed her Ph.D. in Guidance and Counseling at Loyola. In 1975 Dr. Lane was name the dean of the School of Nursing. During her sixteen year tenure as Dean, the School of Nursing grew from three to seven areas of specialization in Nursing; began a doctoral program in Nursing; and the number of students and faculty increased. Stepping down as Dean in 1991, Julia Lane continued to teach in the School of Nursing until her retirement in 1994. Throughout her years of teaching and administrative work at Loyola, Dean Lane was active on a number of University committees. She served on both the Graduate and Undergraduate Curriculum Committees, and from 1977 to 1979 she served as the chair of Lane records Page 1
the Graduate Curriculum Committee. She also served on search committees for the Deans in the University College, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Medical School. Dean Lane was active in professional organizations on the local and national level including the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the National League of Nursing, and the Illinois Nurses Association and, reflecting her interest in Catholic education, she founded the Jesuit Conference of Schools of Nursing. Julia Lane passed away on October 15, 2004. Scope and Content The Julia Lane, Ph.D., span the years 1964 to 199 (bulk 1975 to 1991) and include correspondence, reports, applications, minutes and agendas, newsletters, brochures, programs, speeches, and papers. Series Series 1: Archdiocese of Chicago, 1986-1988, Box 1 This series contains correspondence between Dean Lane and the Archdiocese of Chicago, and reports, based on the Women's Listening Sessions, a project that was sponsored by the Archdiocese of Chicago's Women's Steering Committee in 1985 and 1986, and of which Dean Lane was chair. Series 2: Office Files, 1975-1991, Boxes 1-6 This series is divided into nine subseries - Alumni; Associated Hospitals; Bequests, Grants and Trusts; Correspondence; Faculty; General; Philosophy of Nursing Program; Reports; and Students and include correspondence, reports, notes, brochures, papers, and surveys. Series 3: Professional Activities, 1964-1991. Boxes 6-7 This series is divided into five subseries - Associations; Conferences; Publications; Speeches and Papers Presented; and Universities - and contains correspondence, conference proceedings, book reviews, articles, reports, speeches, and papers. The series documents Dean Lane's involvement in a number of professional nursing organizations, including the American Association of Colleges of Nursing and the Jesuit Conference of School of Nursing. Series 4: Addendum, 1974-1991, Box 8 Two additional boxes of archival material were added to this collection as an addendum in August of 1995 (UA1995.25).
