What is this course about? 1.1 Course description In the contemporary global business environment, business people often interact with culturally different colleagues, competitors, suppliers and government officials. Each operates with their own set of rules of how they should act in a meeting, or a negotiation or in deciding whom to recruit and how. This course is concerned with helping you understand the basis on which culturally different others operate in the business environment. Contemporary cultural theory provides a framework for you to analyse your own cultural assumptions, behaviour of culturally different others and effectively manage cross-cultural differences encountered in the workplace. 1.2 Course content introduction to course culture and communication understanding another culture the role of language cultural values intercultural communications non-verbal communication establishing cross-cultural business relationships communication and conflict resolution within multi-cultural teams intercultural negotiations cultural dynamics in international organisations legal and Government considerations business structures and corporate culture 2. The objective of this course is to equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary for you to interact effectively with members of cultures other than your own, in a business environment. At the end of the course, you will be able to: 1. Understand the theories that explain similarities and variations in business behaviour across national cultural boundaries. 2. Develop your cultural intelligence through increased reflection of your own business behaviours and assumptions. 3. Incorporate an understanding of cultural differences into business communication practices, negotiation strategies and behaviours, conflict management strategies, team management and motivation techniques when dealing with culturally different others. 4. Apply appropriate cultural theory to solve international business challenges or issues. Individual 20% 15 minutes Weeks 4-12 In tutorial Individual 40% 1800 words Week 10 In tutorial Individual 40% 2 hours, 10 minutes 100% Central examination period In exam venue Assessment Task 1: Cultural insight presentation Goal: Product: Format: The cultural insight presentation requires you to share your empathetic and holistic understanding of conducting business in a culture other than your own. You will share this information by providing a presentation to the class. You will give a 15 minute presentation that should include: an introduction to the culture (eg, geography, demographics, dominant ideologies, history, etc.); details about the people of the culture (eg language, traditions, cuisine, music, recreation, etc.); insights to conducting business with the culture; and an enjoyable culturally based class activity. You will nominate two alternate cultures (cultures in which you haven t lived) then be allocated one of these cultures. Oral presentation This is an individual task in PowerPoint format of approximately 15 minutes duration to be presented and submitted in hard copy in the nominated class (only one presentation for the semester) in weeks 4-12. You will nominate a presentation date in the first tutorial. At the time of your presentation you are required to submit one printed copy of the cultural ambassador powerpoints (along with Assignment Cover Sheet) and an electronic copy of the presentation (note: the Prezi presentation format is not suitable) which will be posted by the Course Coordinator to Blackboard for access by you. Page 4 ability to synthesise a holistic cultural perspective and present this as an overview of the culture ability to identify and apply relevant cross-cultural management concepts in cross-cultural business contexts ability to discern the implications for conducting business with the culture and provide practical insight for others demonstration of cultural empathy skills in representing and presenting a culture in a multicultural context demonstration of an appreciation of alternate cultural perspectives presentation skills Presentation skills Generic skill assessed Skill assessment level Problem solving Communication Assessment Task 2: Cultural critique assignment Goal: Product: Format: You are challenged to acquire an empathetic and holistic understanding of a culture unfamiliar to you and develop a cultural critique identifying those factors that have significantly influenced the culture and determine key cultural implications for intercultural communication and negotiation. You will write your cultural critique assignment based on this same culture as Assessment Task 1. ). Report This is an individual assessment in report format. You are to submit your written report in your tutorial during week 10. You are required to complete a Faculty of Arts and Business Assignment cover sheet and ensure you have attached the marking criteria. Page 5 Assessment Task 3: End of semester test Goal: For you to demonstrate your cumulative understanding of cross-cultural management. The exam will enable you to demonstrate mastery of the key course concepts. The exam will include short to medium response questions. Successfully completing this exam will require a good understanding of all the topics covered throughout the course. Product: Exam Format: This is an individual assessment held during the central examination period. This software allows for text comparisons to be made between your submitted assessment item and all other work that SafeAssign has access to. If required, details of how to submit via SafeAssign will be provided on the Blackboard site of the course. Eligibility for Supplementary Assessment Your eligibility for supplementary assessment in a course is dependent of the following conditions applying: a) The final mark is in the percentage range 47% to 49.4% b) The course is graded using the Standard Grading scale c) You have not failed an assessment task in the course due to academic misconduct 5.4 Submission penalties Late submission of assessment tasks will be penalised at the following maximum rate: 5% (of the assessment task s identified value) per day for the first two days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. 10% (of the assessment task s identified value) for the third day 20% (of the assessment task s identified value) for the fourth day and subsequent days up to and including seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. A result of zero is awarded for an assessment task submitted after seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. Weekdays and weekends are included in the calculation of days late. To request an extension you must contact your course coordinator to negotiate an outcome. 6.
