Printing to the Poster Printer Document size The HP Design Jet Z3100ps uses a roll of paper that is 36 wide, however it does not print all the way to the edge of the paper (known as a bleed ). One dimension of your document - including any cropmarks - needs to be smaller than 35.5. Your document will always be orieted to use the least amount of paper. Scanned images 150 dpi is the ideal final resolution for scanned images for this printer. To calculate the correct resolution you will need to scan to get to 150 dpi, simply figure out approximately how much you will be enlarging your original scan on the poster (2x, 2.5x, 3x, etc.) and multiply that same number by 150. Use this result as a rough dpi resolution number for your image. Enlarging your image or raising its resolution in Photoshop does NOT increase your useful resolution or improve image quality. Do not scan or resample photographic images at resolutions higher than 200 dpi when using this printer. The way the printer works and the nature of viewing posters means that anything over these resolutions is not only wasted disk space, but also INCREDIBLY longer processing times. If your image is exceedingly large, we will ask you to adjust it down in Photoshop to a more appropriate resolution. If you are using photographs from CD ROMs, open them in Photoshop and size them by going to the Image Size option in the Image menu, and setting the dimensions to your desired size on the poster (in inches), and setting the resolution to 150 dpi. Resave the image with these new dimensions (and apply the modified image to your document as necessary). The HP Design Jet Z3100ps uses 12 inks to print images, which enlarges the range of colors it can print beyond the normal CMYK color gamut. To utilize this larger color gamut, you should leave your scanned images in RGB mode. However, you should preview your image in CMYK on screen for a more realistic approximation of your printed image. Bright or saturated Reds, Greens, and Blues will not match the screen when printed, since those colors do not exist in the printer s color gamut. In Adobe Photoshop, go to the View menu and select Proof Setup>Working CMYK. Then go to View>Proof Colors) which doesn t actually convert to CMYK, but can give you an idea of what your print will look like. Adjust your colors so that they are acceptable when viewing the proof. Gamut Warning under View will also gray-out the problem areas to make them more obvious to you. Draw-type graphics (such as EPS files) and typography can be scaled up or down with no loss in image quality (even though EPS images on the screen may look poor). Specifying colors The HP Design Jet Z3100ps has its own color reference book that should be used to specify colors for fonts and objects. Use this book to define your colors. The printer does have a Pantone matching system, but cannot gaurentee to be accurate match with the exact Pantone color. Every color printer is going to print out colors differently, so be aware that your colors may not exactly match what you had intended or printed on another printer. Choose a paper There are 2 types of paper to choose from when printing to this printer: HP Premium Instant-dry Photo Gloss (a coated stock with a glossy finish), and or Magiclee Firenze 170 (a matte finish paper). They cost the same, use the sample prints to choose which to print your document. Handling your finished print The HP Design Jet Z3100ps printer is an ink jet printer, so it is sensitive to moisture and fingerprints. Be absolutely sure that your hands and anything else that contacts your print is completely dry, otherwise the ink will run. It is strongly recommended that you make your print more water and fade resistant by lightly spraying it with a sealer of some kind (such as Krylon matte or glossy finish). page 14
