WHAT IS EIKON EXCEL AND WHAT DOES IT OFFER ME? Thomson Reuters Eikon Excel is a key component of Thomson Reuters Eikon. It is essentially an Excel Add-in and allows you to retrieve real-time, historical and fundamental data in the Excel environment. It also provides you with analytical tools (the Adfin Financial Functions) consisting of functions relating different Asset Classes. Using Thomson Reuters Eikon Excel, you can build and analyze your portfolio with our real-time, historical and fundamental data. You can also create real-time pricing tools on different instruments, for example, Interest Rate Swaps, Options using the Adfin Analytic library. In summary, Thomson Reuters Eikon Excel constitutes a complete solution of financial functions and access to Thomson Reuters Data in Microsoft Excel: - Real-time data - Time series data - Reference/fundamental data - Financial Analytics Functions Adfin Analytics HOW DO I CONVERT MY SHEETS FROM POWERPLUS PRO TO EIKON EXCEL? If you previously used Reuters 3000 Xtra and had your own PowerPlus Pro spreadsheet, you can continue to use them in the Thomson Reuters Eikon Excel environment. Just follow the instructions below to carry out the conversion from PowerPlus Pro into Eikon Excel. - Drill into the Start Menu on your desktop - Left click Thomson Reuters > Thomson Reuters Eikon > Eikon Excel to activate Eikon for Excel - You may need to enter your log on details Once you have opened Thomson Reuters Eikon Excel, you will notice Thomson Reuters Menu, if you do not see this menu then you are still in the Microsoft Excel environment. To start using your previous documents, proceed to the File drop-down menu and open your relevant PowerPlus Pro spreadsheet, for example, FX sample.xls You will then notice an Auto Conversion window pops up. Click Yes to convert this PowerPlus Pro spreadsheet to an Eikon for Excel spreadsheet. 2
You will then need to save the spreadsheet, for example, FX sample.xls and you will finally notice a File Conversion complete window appear. 3
Click on Conversion Log to view the Excel Migration Tool report. Once the conversion is complete, you are now ready to start using Thomson Reuters Eikon Excel. DRAGGING AND DROPPING DATA INTO THOMSON REUTERS EIKON EXCEL You can continue using the drag & drop functionality from Thomson Reuters Eikon into Thomson Reuters Eikon Excel. It is a very quick and efficient way to immediately display real-time data in the excel environment. DRAG&DROP FROM A QUOTE From a Quote Object within Thomson Reuters Eikon, simply left mouse click on the value you wish to view in Thomson Reuters Eikon Excel and drag it across and drop it into the destination cell to see it updating in real-time. You will see Thomson Reuters Eikon Excel has created the function RtGet. You can continue this process for multiple fields from the Quote Object. DRAG&DROP FROM A QUOTE LIST A powerful feature of Thomson Reuters Eikon Excel is the ability to drag multiple types and sources of data from a Quote List Object. For example, if you were looking at a Quote List containing constituents of the FTSE Index with a combination of real-time pricing data as well as fundamental Dividend and Earnings data, you can copy the entire table into Thomson Reuters Eikon Excel. 4
Simply click on the blank cell in the top left hand corner of the Quote List, then just click anywhere in the table and drag across to your blank spreadsheet. The data will continue to update in real-time. DRAG&DROP FROM A CHART Dragging and dropping Chart data into Thomson Reuters Eikon Excel continues to exist. Simply choose a Chart and click and hold the series line and drag to the spreadsheet. However, the chart data is not dynamically linked and will not update. RETRIEVING DATA USING INSERT FUNCTION WIZARD As an alternative to drag and drop, you can use the Insert Function Wizard to retrieve real-time, historical and fundamental data. In Thomson Reuters Eikon Excel you can combine multiple data types in one go, so you could create a table including real-time and reference data. The Insert Function is a wizard to simplify and standardize the data retrieval process. It is easy to use and offers a great method to retrieve real-time as well as fundamental data. It is very intuitive and helps you create data engines step-by-step. REAL-TIME DATA To use the Insert Function, simply proceed to the Thomson Reuters drop-down menu and click Insert Function. To get started, simply insert a financial instrument, for example, <EUR=> for Euro Dollar Spot rate: 5
Click the Next button and the Fields page will appear, allowing you to select the fields you wish to retrieve data for. You can easily access the respective field names by clicking on the individual Asset Class folder, for example by selecting the Cross Asset folder; you will see all the fields relevant for cross asset instruments. Alternatively, navigate to a relevant asset class folder. For example, choose Bid and Ask from Forex Folder, add them and click the Finish button. 6
Click the Finish button if the Summary page meets your requirement. Alternatively, click the relevant Edit button to modify the parameters of your retrieval. Once you have finished editing your parameters, click on Finish and you will see the real-time data immediately display in your sheet. 7
A brilliant feature of Thomson Reuters Eikon Excel is that you can edit your formula further once you have clicked on the Finish button and populated the sheet with data. For example, If you want to add another currency pair to the existing list, type in the new currency pair at cell A6, in this example, we are using <GBP=> for Sterling Dollar Spot rate: Place your cursor at the cell that contains the RData function, click at the Thomson Reuters drop-down menu and choose Insert Function. When the Insert Function Wizard appears, click the Edit button besides the Instruments, change the Instrument range from A3:A5 to A3:A6 and click the Finish button. 8
You will then see the spreadsheet automatically update, including the additional data requested. REFERENCE DATA Retrieving reference data follows exactly the same process and can be performed within seconds. Let s take a quick example. Firstly, proceed to the Thomson Reuters drop-down menu and click Insert Function. As previously demonstrated, insert a financial instrument, for example, <0001.HK> and click the Next button. 9
Continue to use the Realtime and Fundamental Tab and choose your fields. For example, Equity > Div.Dat and Dividend, click the Next button. Click the Finish button if the Summary page meets your requirement, if not; click the relevant Edit button to modify the parameters. As before, you will see the results immediately display in your Eikon Excel spreadsheet and should you choose to edit your parameters, simply follow the same process as above. 10
HISTORICAL DATA Retrieving historical data in Thomson Reuters Eikon Excel is also quick and easy to do via the wizard but follows a few different steps to the real-time and fundamental wizards. Below we will demonstrate an example so that you feel comfortable using the Historical Data Wizard. Again, proceed to the Thomson Reuters drop-down menu and click on Insert Function. As with the other wizards, insert a financial instrument, for example, <C> for Citigroup and click on the Next button. This time navigate to the Time Series tab and choose your interval and the fields you require. For example, choose Ask > Timestamp and Ask > Close. Leave the interval as the default Daily. 11
Next you will need to choose the amount of data you require, in the Number of Rows, for example, 260. There are various other parameters to choose from. For example, you may wish to select specific start and end dates for the data, time zones or trading hours. Simply use the drop-down menus to edit the parameters. Finally, click the Finish button if the Summary page meets your requirements and you will see the results immediately update in your Eikon Excel spreadsheet. 12
INTRODUCTION TO ADFIN ANALYTICS Analytical toolkits (Adfin functions and Style Management) are included in Thomson Reuters Eikon Excel. Adfin functions provide real-time data retrieval, date calculations, option premium and greeks calculation, Swap rates and Net-Present-Value computation etc. The preconfigured information means you do not have to key in things like holiday dates or swap deal details manually. To access Adfin functions, proceed to the Insert drop-down menu and click on Function. You will see that Eikon Excel s pre-built functions are placed in their relevant Adfin categories. AUTOMATIC LOG OUT Your Thomson Reuters Eikon session will automatically end as soon as you close the application. You will be prompted to enter your User ID and Password on next start-up. If you wish to open the application without entering your credentials on every start-up, you can tick the Remember My Password option in the login screens. If Thomson Reuters Eikon Excel is running when you exit Thomson Reuters Eikon, the following prompt is displayed: 13
You should click No if you want to leave Thomson Reuters Eikon Excel to retrieve data. Please note: This option will allow access to your Thomson Reuters Eikon without the need to enter your login and password.
