Digitalization is rapidly changing the content delivery supply chain for media companies. Tieto Media Gate enables both content producers and broadcasters to reduce their technology investments and management costs for their technical environments. Utilizing the digitalized model, TV companies in Finland, such as MTV Media, Nelonen Media and YLE, are free to concentrate on their core business content. The content production supply chain from content producer to broadcaster is an entity, which can be re-organized and rationalized, to achieve improved productivity at the supply chain level. Even though new IT-based solutions make the current model more effective, it is obvious that a real productivity leap can only be achieved by re-thinking the supply chain. Tieto Media Gate is a service-oriented, cloudbased model which can replace the current do-it-all-by-yourself model. Simplified and automated metadata-supported processes make it possible to reduce technology dependency and increase the chain productivity. The new efficient model is based on experiences from the already running Spotgate service, which provides tapeless ad delivery for commercial TV companies in Finland. Tieto are piloting the new model Media Gate together with the main TV companies in Finland (MTV Media, Nelonen Media and YLE) and some production companies. The basic principle of Media Gate is a concentrated service function between content producers and broadcasters, serving the requirements of all parties. The advantages of the model are tapeless work flow with efficient metadata structure to support automated transfer and management of data. The centralized model produces media asset management (MAM) services cost-efficiently for all supply chain parties. Through the service model, Media Gate enables both content producers and broadcasters to reduce their technology investments and their technical environment management costs. It is possible to combine several functions to serve the whole value chain, e.g. content transfer and transcoding, QC, translations, subtitling, dubbing, TV program info, time-coding, storage and archiving of content, contract management, invoicing and funding services etc. Tieto Media Gate is a service-oriented, cloud-based model which can replace the current do-it-all-byyourself model. Results in brief: Increased ad sales Simplified content handling Reduced technology costs How do you take broadcasting to the next level? Talk to the IT company with its head in the clouds. Content is definitely king, but the challenge for both production companies and broadcasters is to store, deliver and access ever-increasing amounts of TV content more efficiently. Media Gate from Tieto is a cloud-based IT media solution that utilizes our highend digital technology to deliver content, saving you time and money. Media Gate s simplified and automated metadata-supported processes enable producers and broadcasters to concentrate on what they do best.
With more than a million objects in constantly expanding video and audio archives, the national broadcasting company in Finland (YLE) commissioned a unified asset management and workflow system, METRO. The result is improved programme quality, substantial cost savings and efficiency gains through better workflows thanks to ease of access to all of YLE s assets. Media companies must make best use of their continuously growing archives, moving away from tapes to digital assets and improving their business processes. The management of these assets becomes critical for managing business and developing it into new areas. As a national broadcaster, YLE of Finland has more than 50 years of archives; film, video and audiotape, computer files, music and print: 350,000 tapes and reels, and more than a million objects in the music and radio archives. Of course, these numbers are growing fast. To make best use of its archives, and to improve its business processes in the future, YLE commissioned a unified asset management and workflow system, called METRO, developed in association with Blue Order and Tieto Broadcasting. In 2004, YLE started a large-scale programme to optimize all essential television production processes. From a technical point of view, the goal of the project is to integrate all existing and new digital production systems, as well as systems for the television archives, into a common networked production platform. The core of this platform is the METRO System, YLE s enterprise-level media asset management system (MAM system) for all kinds of media. The main function of METRO system is to support and enhance the radio and television production and broadcasting processes: to provide a unified and uniform platform for all media production and archiving at YLE; to enable and promote the cross-utilization of media in different organizational units; to provide easy access to the company s media assets; to speed up the programme-making process; to increase the productivity and quality of journalistic work. Together with Tieto and partners we made and implemented a roadmap for YLE s media asset management, moving away from video tape and acquisitions, as the on-air producing of TV programs has shifted onto the METRO platform. Results in brief: Mika Lavonen, head of television operations at YLE Improve programme quality through easy access to all media assets Substantial cost savings and efficiency gains through better workflows Fewer dubs of material Reduced archive preservation costs Remember that great documentary from 1957? Chances are we can help you find it. Tieto has been instrumental in helping the national broadcaster YLE Finland to build, implement and manage their METRO media archiving system. Our knowledge and competence in providing IT solutions for broadcasting enabled us to deliver a unified and uniform platform for all media production and archiving. It promotes the cross-utilization of media in different organizational units, provides easy access to the company s media assets and speeds up the programme-making process.
