When I first started the programme I was overwhelmed, so much to do for university and then working busy shifts in clinical practice. It took a while to get used to organising my time so that I could really enjoy what I was doing. Everyone in my group is very supportive, friendly and fun. We all get along and the same can be said about the lecturers too. We all like to talk about our experiences while being in placement and support each other when preparing for exams and assignments. Practical placements are where you learn the most, and it seems to be where all your learning comes together and becomes real!
Nursing is busy from the word go but you quickly find your feet, especially when on clinical placement. This is where you really learn to understand illness and what it is like to care for someone with a life threatening condition. The course includes workshops where nursing and medical students work as teams in simulated clinical settings using the hi-tec, but all too life-like SimBaby and SimMan. This safe controlled learning environment allows you to apply and extend your skills. Studying nursing both within the university and on placement can be stressful but there is always support on hand to help with the academic and clinical challenges.
