Jack Nasielski, Sr. Director, Engineering Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. April 9-10, 2015 Smart Data Pricing + 5G

Smart Data Pricing and 5G TODAY Cellular and Wi-Fi networks cannot serve all devices Devices cannot connect to all available networks Tyranny of the SIM card, multi-sim not the solution Fixed data buckets and fixed IoT connection fees leave money on the table FUTURE and 5G Dynamic subscriptions Establish multiple access and service credentials with or without physical SIM cards New MVNO and wholesale/retail/sponsored models. Extend opportunities with existing networks Extend service via relays and yield management Device based SDP and smarter connection management Local inference of network state Virtual devices to separate personal and business charges. 2

Dynamic Subscription User perspective Today: 2G-4G mandates SIM card access, tied to a single cellular operator Users well trained to turn off data roaming and look for Wi-Fi when travelling 5G timeframe: Enable more types of dynamic credentials to be used for access Shared Secrets: on SIM/USIM or another trusted component Public-key Certificate: ID and public key binding. Access credentials may be provisioned Over the top (OTT) access credentials supplied by collaborating service providers Out of band (OOB) or via another network E.g., pre-installed keys or certificates, (U) SIM installation, bootstrapping via Wi-Fi Operator perspective New channels to sell services Monetize relationships with other service providers. 3

New Service Providers Traditional Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) looking for new revenue 5G white papers propose to serve new types of service providers Actual serving MNO often may not be seen as the service provider by end users. Service Providers may sponsor connectivity, act as reseller or serve verticals such as IoE. GE AT&T FaceBook Service Providers Amazon GM Skype Cellular + Wi-Fi MNOs Apps and Devices 4

Yield Management via Relays Extend utility of cellular data to currently unsubscribed or out of coverage devices via relays Cellular backhaul, Wi-Fi + Bluetooth access Pricing of access links via yield management techniques User perspective Tony is out of service no coverage, his friend Jo has a great LTE or 5G access link and is willing to relay Tony s packets. Jo s device provides terms to Tony so that her carrier may get paid for his traffic. Charges/tokens may depend on network loading and other time varying factors. Tony Jo Jo s carrier 5

Device based SDP and Connection Management Use case: users can t/won t manage connection settings, it s unclear anyway how best to decide between multiple cellular and Wi-Fi options today If Wi-Fi is available, use it. Results in poor user experience sometimes, prompting users to disable Wi-Fi. Operators can manage system selection (e.g., 3GPP ANDSF) Towards device based automatic connection management considering Quality of access and application demands Local inference of network state Quality of access links Cost of access links apps apps Power constraints. apps service provider a service provider b network 1 network 2 Device connection manager network 3 6
