P.G. Chambers School Discovering the unique potential within every child Volume 2 Issue 6 Team Effort Scores with SMART Boards The education, services, and care provided at P.G. Chambers School have always been a team effort. Over the past year, that team grew even larger as a wide variety of organizations and companies rallied behind an effort to bring new technology into every classroom. 2010, it soon became clear that it could materially enhance every student s learning experience. Thus the goal was set to have a SMART Board installed in every classroom. Susan Seamans, Executive Director, states, It s vital that we keep up J-E-T-S Jets! Jets! Jets! should have access. Still, such an investment was well beyond our budget. So what happened over the course of the past two years was truly gratifying. The first contribution came from the Hyde and Watson Foundation headquartered in Warren, NJ. Through a generous capital grant the school was able to purchase two SMART Boards. Another foundation, the Daniel Galorenzo Foundation which has made significant donations every year followed with a grant that enabled another classroom to be equipped with SMART Board technology. Not long thereafter came a remarkable gift. Chambers School graduation ceremonies, warmly welcoming all to share this joyous day with the PGCS graduating class of 2011. Six wonderful young women marked the end of their time at the school with a video retrospective of their early years and successes. Touched with humor, wisdom, and a bit of nostalgia, teachers Laura Jaarsma and Linda Cook told each girl s story. Laura began, This year was filled with excitement, discovering who we are and what we can accomplish. We celebrated birthdays, secretly writing birthday cards. The class managed the school store: setting up, operating, and pricing items while practicing newly acquired money skills. In cooking class, students created their own recipes and voted on favorites. As young adults, they practiced household chores: making beds, washing dishes, loading the dishwasher, using a microwave, scrapbooking, and doing the laundry all while playing laundry basketball! Donning the class color, blue, the students participated in the school s walk-a-thon, walking four laps around the building! Our main focus this year was learning about teamwork. When asked, What is teamwork? the responses were insightful, demonstrating a true understanding of this important life skill. To the parents of our graduates, it has been an honor and a privilege for the staff at PGCS to nurture and guide your (l-r) 2011 PGCS graduates Madison, Jaclyn, Vanessa, Emily, and Lenore children as they have become who they are today and move towards who they will become in the future. In the words of Katy Perry s Firework song, our graduates are like fireworks. Each young lady has ignited her light and lets it shine every day at P.G. Chambers School. Lenore, Vanessa, Victoria, Jaclyn, Emily, and Madison own the night like the fourth of July because you are all fireworks and will show this world what you are worth. burst with your smiles and laughter as you brighten everyone s day. Laura continued, In July, Victoria began attending McKinnon School in Wharton and Vanessa, Lenore,Jaclyn, Emily, and Madison entered ECLC (Early Childhood Learning Center) in Chatham. Lenore, you are a true friend, always ready to help as the years went by, you have blossomed into a beautiful young lady. Your sense of humor keeps us all smiling; your famous April Fool s jokes were the best! Your Monet Water Lilies won a special commendation by our art show judges from the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey. Emily, your hard work and dedication shine in all you do. Whether reading short stories or using a calculator for shopping lists, your free spirit and personality are unique, and your signature hand on your hip and good morning smile brightens every day. Jaclyn, your smile also brightens up the room each and every day. You put your heart and soul into everything and thanks to you, the class was always on top of our team points, earning a reward at the end of the school day. You are a pleasure having in class please continue to share your beautiful smile! Vanessa, you bring joy and excitement to the classroom. I enjoyed our talks about what you want to be when you grow up a teacher. You watched me closely this year and imitated my teaching, helping your friends when they needed it. You said, Laura, I can do it because you taught me how. You are a true inspiration. Madison, your genuine love of learning shines through in everything you do, bringing excitement to handwriting and typing, as well as grating cheese for cooking. We enjoyed watching you ride at horse shows. Your care and your sensitivity lifted our spirits by a simple Hi, are you OK? followed by a big Madison hug! Linda Cook, classroom 2 teacher, ended the student tributes with her student, Victoria. Victoria, you have become a beautiful, intelligent, and thoughtful young lady. In your years at PGCS you accomplished so many things: planning a fashion show, acting in The Producers after school club, serving as MC for school concerts, and Victoria s Graduation Speech debating with Leo over the presidential election that was a debate to remember! You are motivated, independent, empathetic, determined, and a true leader, admired by your friends. Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen and the class of 2011! I would like to introduce myself; my name is Victoria. I am a graduate of the class of 2011. I would like to thank my P.G. Chambers School family. Here, I have had amazing people helping me for 11 years to learn, walk, talk, and do things with my hands. My family and I are so grateful for P.G. Chambers School. I m sure that it will always be in our memories. We have had such fun experiences, like the spring concerts, field day, bell choir, and preschool I Can Day. I would like to thank everyone involved in my life at P.G. Chambers School. I would also like to thank all my friends in class 2. I have had a wonderful experience with them. I love them and will miss them very much. Good luck to the graduates of 2011! Thank you! 3
For the past two years, students at P.G. Chambers School have been using mainstream technology, such as the Apple ipad, to learn, explore, and interact. One area, speech and language development, has benefited enormously with the introduction of the ipad. The ipad, tells Jen Jacobs, M.S., CCC-SLP, a speech pathologist at P.G. Chambers School and one of the winners of the school s ipad Challenge, has virtually limitless applications or apps that increase independence in communication, recreation, and learning. Not to mention, that it is affordable, user friendly, and perfect for a child with a disability to use at school, at home, and in his community. Everyone knows the ipad, says Edee Levey, Assistant Director and Principal at the school. Instead of a $7,000 highly sophisticated and fragile communication device that is cumbersome and difficult to use, the ipad is mainstream and cool. When one of our students is using an ipad she is just like any other student not clearly identified as a student with a disability. It is just wonderful The ipad is changing Communication for self-esteem along with such great improvements in communication. We asked Jen Jacobs to tell us how the students are using the ipad. She explained that an essential application in using the ipad for communication is Proloquo2go, a software program that must be loaded onto the device, requiring between 5 and 10 hours of customizing the pages for a student. The ipad and Proloquo2go are dynamic, meaning that the pages link to other pages which can store thousands of vocabulary words. Voice output enables the ipad to act as a child s voice for students who have difficulty making sounds and saying words. The best way to illustrate how the system works is to introduce nine-yearold Max, who has a diagnosis of spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy. Max has been using the ipad and Proloquo2go for more than a year. Prior to the ipad, Max communicated using gestures, tried to say words that were often very difficult to understand, made nasal sounds, used limited sign language, and used Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC), which was a dynamic display voice output device and language boards. Max s AssistiveWare and Proloquo2go Make Video at P.G. Chambers School continued on next page Marco Niemeijer, brother of David Niemeijer, owner of AssistiveWare and developer of Proloquo2Go, came to P.G. Chambers School in the fall to videotape students using the software on their ipads. Two films were produced one for the AssistiveWare website and a second film for the school, demonstrating both ipads and other technology. Watch the film on our new website, www.chambersschool.org. Proloquo2Go is a product from AssistiveWare that provides a full-featured communication solution for people who have difficulty speaking. It brings natural sounding text-to-speech voices, close to 8000 up-to-date symbols, powerful automatic conjugations, a large default vocabulary, full expandability and extreme ease of use to the iphone, ipod touch, and ipad. Proloquo2Go was originally created in a collaboration between AssistiveWare and Sennott Consulting. In 2008, David Niemeijer and Samuel Sennott started work on what became Proloquo2Go, and believed they could make a difference by creating a new Augmentative Assistive Communication solution that was powerful, affordable, and cool. Proloquo2Go was first released on the App Store in April 2009. Since then Proloquo2Go has made a large impact on the AAC world. From the amazing user community, to a front-page feature in the New York Times, Proloquo2Go has had a profound impact. 4
(l-r) Donald N. Lombardi, Ph.D. and Tyler Courter of Steven s Institute of Technology, Adam Porcelan of Ramapo College, and Nicholas Walsh of Steven s, before their social media presentation to board members and invited guests. Social Media! This summer, P.G. Chambers School launched a social media initiative to raise awareness of the school and expand our capacity for reaching school families, friends, and community supporters. The term Social Media refers to the use of web-based or mobile technologies to turn communication into an interactive dialogue. Our social media presence really took off with the placement of three summer interns in the development department, Tyler Courter and Nicholas Walsh, Stevens Institute of Technology; and Adam Porcelan, Ramapo College. PGCS entered the social media landscape with profiles on Facebook and Twitter, along with a school blog site. Working under the direct supervision of Renee Gitto, Development Coordinator, our presence went from zero followers on Facebook to 200 followers and 12,000 post views by the end of the students placement in August. The interns also conducted market research, designed the Facebook page, and wrote blogs on school programs and events. Follow PGCS on Facebook at facebook.com/pgchambersschool and on Twitter at twitter.com/pgchambersschl. Social media has grown rapidly today nearly 4 in 5 active internet users visit social networks and blogs* United States internet users spend more time on Facebook than any other web page* Our social media profiles on Facebook and Twitter showcase the students artwork, class projects, school news, initiatives, and announcements as well as special events and fundraising activities. Andrea Quigley, Director of Development, praised both the interns and Ms. Gitto for their exceptional work this summer. Their work really put P.G. Chambers School on the social media map, said Ms. Quigley. We have been so eager to move in this direction, and hope to serve as a model for other private, non-profit schools in using this forum to communicate and inform. Adds Ms. Gitto, Overall the social media outlets allow us to share what makes PGCS the very best, and that is our mission. *Neilsen s State of the Media: The Social Media Report Q3 2011 ipad continued from previous page family is very supportive. He loves purple, his best friend, Caleb, and car washes! Because of Max s fine motor challenges, using the ipad with the typical touch and swipe of a finger was a main concern. Speech pathologist, Jen, consulted with Max s occupational therapist at the school to find ways for Max to control his touch on the ipad. After several months of trialing, Max was on his way. His occupational therapist said, I have seen a lot of improvement in Max s use of the ipad. He is able to isolate his index finger well and he is accurately touching most of the buttons on the screen. He is able to type his name on his own and copy simple words. He navigates through familiar programs easily and he can get from one board to another quickly. Now, Max is a wiz at using his ipad and is able to navigate quickly and independently. He is creating novel sentences (e.g., Max+paint+purple) When one of our students is using an ipad, she is just like any other student not clearly identified as a student with a disability. and using the keyboard to type. At Halloween, he typed Cars2 to describe his costume. Max can use the linked pages to participate in classroom morning meetings for example, Today is Friday, December 2, 2011. Max s mom, Ellen said, We were very eager to try it out, and it has lived up to our expectations. I think having the ipad has decreased the frustrations Max might have about his challenges verbalizing words. I feel very lucky that we ve had the good fortune of trying an ipad and Proloquo2Go early on. It has made a real difference in Max s life, and in our family life. 5

P.G. Chambers School is quiet, but not for long. Soon lights are lit and the sounds of small feet echo through the hallways. The staff greets and welcomes the children, easing the separation for parents and children alike. And then breakfast is served. Each day, 240 days a year, this is the beginning of a day at Kids Count Child Care. Kids Count is an inclusive child care program open to both typically developing young children and infants, toddlers, and preschoolers with disabilities and developmental delays. The children are drawn from the community, the PGCS early intervention program and preschool, and staff families. Children are entitled to equal opportunities where they can experience the richness of a world that values and includes all children. Inclusive child care is the foundation environment where this richness can first be experienced, stated Carolyn Young, Director of Kids Count. Since Kids Count opened in 1993 almost 1,000 children have spent a significant portion of their childhood in the program. A dedicated staff has cared for, nurtured, guided, taught, and, most of all, loved each and every one of them. Adds Ms. Young, We believe that children are the world s most valuable resource. It is our mission to provide a safe, secure, and stimulating environment where they can become independent, competent, and capable individuals. Teachers in Kids Count use intentional teaching practices, that is, they consider all aspects of the learning environment; from the arrangement of the classroom to the delivery of instruction. Teaching is an art, using instinct and intuition, but it is also a science, requiring knowledge of research findings related to both early childhood development and learning content. Intentional teachers blend art and science to achieve optimum outcomes for children. They use their intuition to fine tune, but they base the core of their practices in scientific research. * Children are prepared for the increasing challenges of kindergarten through exposure to a research-based curriculum combined with a clear * Pam Shiller, curriculum specialist and freelance author and speaker, quotes from Exchange Magazine, The Intentional Teacher, January/February 2009.
understanding of each child s unique learning style and strengths. At Kids Count, the Creative Curriculum provides a basis to create hands-on, intentional learning activities. Teaching Strategies Gold, an observational assessment tool for teachers to use to gain an understanding of each child s developmental strengths and progress, is used in conjunction with the curriculum to plan activities. Curriculum modifications and classroom adaptations allow all children opportunities to develop to their full potential. Creativity, imagination, self worth, and foundation skills that are integral to future achievement and success are fostered with the teaching staff s guidance and direction. Child care is shared care and includes continuing communication between parents and providers to successfully address each child s needs. Through this collaboration, children experience a world of learning and fun that is individualized, reflecting both family ideals and sound practices. There is always one moment in childhood when the door opens and the future begins. For the children who attend Kids Count Child Care, that door opens a bit wider every day. Children can enroll in Kids Count year round. Please call director, Carolyn Young at 973.829.8484 ext. 118 or email at young@chambersschool.org. SMART Boards continued from page 1 contribution to P.G. Chambers School in honor of her friend and neighbor, Jack, who is a student at the school. Those generous contributions were enough to purchase another SMART Board for Jack s classroom. The team that was building the effort grew exponentially when another group stepped forward to help. Since moving their headquarters to Florham Park, the New York Jets football team has been a staunch supporter of the school, making such contributions as the refurbished playground and high-tech physical therapy equipment. Through the Jets organization, the school was put in contact with Teq, the largest provider of interactive classroom technology and service in the country. Teq then partnered with Smart Technologies to contribute two additional boards as well as two portable SMART Boards. Delivery of the new equipment was something special as several players from the Jets, along with representatives from Teq and Smart, personally carried the new equipment into the school. And the team kept growing in unexpected ways. A group of Intel employees volunteered their time one day at the school in various classroom projects. While here, they became very impressed with the way technology was being used in the classroom. So much so, that they decided to help. Networking with colleagues, they were able to recruit two companies, Government Executive Media Group and O Keefe and Company, who contributed, along with a significant gift from Intel, SMART Boards and installation for the classrooms. The drive wasn t over yet. An appeal at Menus for the Mind, the long-running lecture luncheon series, resulted in substantial wish list contributions to fund yet another classroom s SMART Board as well as the purchase of several ipads. Finally, in December, Novartis Pharmaceuticals awarded the school a grant that enabled the school to purchase a SMART Table, a more portable table top SMART screen that increased interaction among students, in particular the very young students at the school who could easily access the table. Since the installations in the classrooms, the response to this new technology has been overwhelmingly positive. Janet Hughes has seen an enormous change in her students since the installation of a SMART Board in her classroom. As she explains, Technology is no longer a luxury for schools but a requirement for today s students to keep up with 21st century learning. For her students, this new technology is engaging, highly motivating, and results in great improvement in students ability to interact with each other. The SMART Board is a tool to reach students, using many of the senses (hearing, touch, and seeing) for learning. What is most exciting, Janet remarks, is that technology is now offering a way for students to participate in academics that they never had before. Smart Board Technology in class We ve come a long way from chalk on slate and dusty erasers. The SMART Boards now in every classroom at P.G. Chambers School are transforming the way students interact with each other, their teachers, and their subject matter. The large touch sensitive screens are mounted on rails so height can be adjusted to accommodate students with different needs. Powerful computer software enables a great variety of applications to be tailored to the learning style of each student. Among the many features: Writing, drawing, moving objects, and erasing is accomplished with intuitive touch and gestures. Images and text created on the SMART Board can be saved and archived on a standard computer. A host of free education resources is available to support learning activities on the devices. The SMART Boards can display computer screens, and thus their software and images, including web pages and video. 7
The Early Learning Project P.G. Chambers School is offering an innovative series of sessions for toddlers with developmental challenges and their families. This collaborative approach to early learning will provide early intervention for families of toddlers, 12 to 36 months, in which family support and education will be combined with group activities. The project will be organized into six, eight-week sessions, addressing overall learning, growth, and development. In the weekly sessions parents participate in activities with their children and in group education, information, and support meetings with other parents. Research demonstrates that children s communication skills, social abilities, problem-solving skills, expressive abilities, and motor abilities improve through Barbara Carter, Early Intervention teacher, plays a sensory game with PGCS student Julian. programs that emphasize expressive arts activities. Based on this research, the sessions will include music, yoga, and sensory integration; feeding and movement; art, communication, and technology. The program is unique in its integrated approach and implementation of the sessions, which are designed, lead, and evaluated by teachers, therapists, and families. It is expected that up to 48 toddlers and their families will participate in the project; families can enroll in either one eight-week session or the entire series. An important outcome of the year-long project will be an Implementation Guide that other early intervention providers can use to replicate the project. The program, which began in September 2011, has been so successful Michele, Julian, and Franklin are discovering their sense of touch with different textured objects. that several parents have continued on to subsequent sessions. The project has been made possible through generous grants from the Irving and Maude Laurie Foundation, the Summit Area Public Foundation, TD Charitable Foundation, Provident Bank Foundation, and CVS Community Grants Program. See our next newsletter, CONNECTION, Vol. 2, Issue 7, for the article on Moonlight in Monte Carlo, the Third Annual Casino Night. Susan Seamans, Executive Director of PGCS, along with Joe Gazdalski of Glenmede, welcome guests to Moon Over Miami Casino Night. Glenmede Investments generously sponsored the 2011 event. Sometimes the sequel is, indeed, better than the original. The Second Annual P.G. Chambers School Casino Night proved the point more people, more action, more prizes, more fun. And, most importantly, more funds raised to benefit the PGCS students. More than 250 guests turned out at the Villa at Mountain Lakes for a gala evening set to the theme Moon Over Miami. They were greeted on a pink carpet entrance by co-chairs Michele Bonanno, Danielle Strazza, and Nicole Wallace along with High Roller Sponsor Joseph Gazdalski of Glenmede Investment and Wealth Management, and executive director, Susan Seamans. Among the host of prizes won during the night were a 7-day Holland America cruise for two, two tickets to the 2012 Super Bowl, and a 42 flat panel television. A highlight of the evening was a moving presentation from parent speaker and event co-chair, Nicole Wallace, who shared her family s story about her daughter Gianna s transforming experience at the school. As the evening s master of ceremonies, Gazdalski applauded the outpouring of community support for Casino Night and the children of P.G. Chambers School. We are proud to be associated with and support this wonderful fundraising event because we know not only how much the school s efforts benefit the children, but also all the families of the children. Added Seamans, This is truly a wonderful event. It brings our families and Moon Over Miami is a night to Remember! friends together for a really fun grown up night. And at the same time, thanks to our many friends and supporters in the community, we re able to raise a significant amount of money that directly benefits our children. Assisting the event co-chairs in making the evening such a huge success were ad journal chair, Anabela Rossi, and gift basket chair, Tiffany Srnensky. I was so moved at that first visit, meeting the children and talking to the therapists, and that is the element of P.G. Chambers School that has never changed, these therapists and teachers really work nothing short of magic. That is my true feeling, and one that has sustained me in serving as a trustee Gloria Dodd, Trustee (l-r) Patti Chambers, Gloria Dodd, and Linda Kaugher Gloria Dodd Retires from Board of Trustees When I first visited the school (then called the Children s Center for Therapy and Learning) in 1993 with Patti Chambers and Linda Kaugher, reflects Gloria Dodd, I said, God has whispered in my ear, I know what I want to do. And now, after serving almost 20 years as a trustee, Mrs. Dodd continues to evoke that same inspiration and dedication to the children who attend P.G. Chambers School. Gloria recalls that after her visit she quickly met with Patti, Linda, and Kim Wentworth to begin planning for the gala anniversary of the school, A Night of Magic. Gloria s skills as Vice President of Marketing for the New Jersey Devils and her board service for several philanthropic organizations were eagerly put to use for the exceptional event. Gloria tells us that the Night of Magic kicked off what would become a year of magic with the move to the Cedar Knolls facility. Finn Wentworth, then president of the board of trustees, soon nominated Gloria to the board. That first gala was the impetus for the school s signature fundraiser, Menus for the Mind, which is celebrating its 17th year. Over the years, Gloria has watched the school grow and has remained constantly pleased with the programs, the variety and scope of services, and, as she states, each child s own personal magic. While she is leaving the board, she will never be separated from the school. Her tenure as a trustee became part of her life-commitment to the school and the students. In considering the future, Gloria has high expectations for her fellow and future board members, and advises that as a trustee one has a commitment to changing the lives of children. In the future, Gloria would like to see the school build a foundation through a substantial endowment fund that will preserve the values and mission of the school for generations of children to come. Gloria and her husband Bill live in New Jersey, but enjoy traveling to their homes in California and Nantucket. She will continue to serve as an advisor to the school s development committee. We are so very grateful to Gloria, states board president, Dr. Unjeria C. Jackson. Her voice, energy, and love of the students and the school will be missed. Linda Kaugher also retired from the P.G. Chambers School Board of Trustees in 2011. Please watch for a feature on Linda in our next edition of CONNECTION, Vol. 2, Issue 7. Eric C. Elbell, CFA Appointed as Trustee 10 P.G. Chambers School Board of Trustees announced with great pleasure the appointment of Eric. C. Elbell, CFA as a trustee, effective July 1, 2011. Eric has been a long-time friend of the school, that began with the involvement of his wife Sarah, a physical therapist, who worked with several P.G. Chambers School students. Eric brings his excellent skills as an investment professional to his work on the board and we are so pleased that he has accepted this appointment, states Unjeria C. Jackson, M.D., President of the Board of Trustees. Mr. Elbell holds a Master of Business Administration from The Pennsylvania State University Smeal College of Business and a Chartered Financial Analyst designation from the CFA Institute. He is currently vice president of Independent Fiduciary Services in Newark, NJ, having relocated here to New Jersey in November 2010. Prior to this position he served as an equity research analyst for Fenimore Asset Management in Cobleskill, NY. Eric s philosophy as well as his extensive philanthropic work is built on his strong analytic skills, his appreciation of strong leadership, and sound management. He tells us that, prior to becoming involved with our school, he did some extensive homework, making a spreadsheet of organizations that he was interested in supporting. P.G. Chambers School really came out on top, explains Eric. It is the kind of successful, responsible, and yet dynamic and progressive organization that I wanted to be part of and when I become part of something, I give it my all. Susan Seamans, Executive Director, joins Dr. Jackson and the other trustees in welcoming Eric Elbell to the board. We believe that Eric s wide range of skills, that include training, mentoring, designing programs, and developing marketing materials, will be a substantial asset for our board and we are so pleased that he is with us, she stated. Eric lives in Caldwell with his wife Sarah and their young son.

It s true Max might not be able to do some things other 7-year-olds can do, or do them in the same mommy could use a little liposuction? You might think it s rude to pull your child aside and explain that my child has special needs. Actually, I d appreciate it if you did do that. Sometimes, kids don t know what to make of Max or how to play with him. I can certainly jump in and explain things to your child, but it ll be much more reassuring and encouraging coming from you. Say it however you wish This is a child who can t talk like you do but who likes to play just like you do; you may need to have a little more patience with him but please, say it. My child will feel included, what could be bad? Max is perfectly content with who he is, cheerful and life-loving! Ellen Seidman is an editor, writer and the mother of Max, a student at P.G. Chambers School. She authored this article, that appeared in a recent issue of Good Housekeeping Magazine. 11
Menus for the Mind Another Successful Season 12 The Menus for the Mind lecture luncheon series has long been an integral part of the fundraising efforts that support P.G. Chambers School. The 2010-2011 season continued that tradition with three events, each a huge success thanks to the tireless efforts of chairpersons Colleen Boyd, Kathy Cowan, Christine Gilfillan, Muffie Roelke, and Suzanne Spero. Nationally renowned speakers are just one element of the succcess of the Menus for the Mind lecture series. In November, 300 friends and supporters gathered at the Park Avenue Club to hear famed model and author Christy Turlington-Burns speak on maternal child health in developing countries. A welcome respite from a harsh winter came in February with a beautiful morning gathering at the school with interactive school tours and student technology demonstrations. Gretchen Rubin, author of the best-selling book The Happiness Project, was the speaker. Menus returned to the Park Avenue Club in May where the attendees heard Dr. Dean Ornish, the well-known author and lecturer on lifestyle change, speak on ways to prevent and even reverse progression of disease. Such nationally renowned speakers are but one element of the event s success. A host of friends and sponsors contribute each year to helping make the luncheons informative and fun. The 2010-2011 season s sponsors included: The MCJ Amelior Foundation, Kim and Finn Wentworth, The Bayview Foundation, The Lipper Family Charitable Foundation, Rose and David Nakamura, Cathy and Jeff Walsh, Carroll, McNulty & Kull, LLC, The Glenmede Trust Company, and our Teal Table Hostesses, Pamela Andersen, Patti Chambers, P.G. Chambers School Board of Trustees, Jill Farris, Megan Hagerty, Unjeria C. Jackson, M.D., Sheila Labrecque, and Lynne Pagano. The first luncheon for the Menus for the Mind 2011-2012 series was held at the Park Avenue Club on December 7, 2011. A full article on the 2011-2012 series will be published in the next edition of Connection. Save the Date! Lauren Wylie Author/Blogger of inspiredbyantarctica.com Wednesday, April 25, 2012 Top PGCS student Jack met Christy Turlington-Burns at the November 2010 luncheon, where she spoke to a group of over 300 guests at the Park Avenue Club. Middle Event co-chairs Kathy Cowan, Christine Gilfillan, Suzanne Spero, and Muffie Roelke (not pictured Colleen Boyd), along with PGCS executive director Susan Seamans, take a moment to enjoy their success. Bottom Guest speaker Dr. Dean Ornish shared insight into healthier living at the May 2011 Luncheon at the Park Avenue Club.
7th Annual Golf Classic Scores Big Save the Date! June 4, 2012 Noted sports psychologist Dr. Bob Rotella once authored a book entitled Golf is Not a Game of Perfect. He obviously never experienced the kind of day on the links that more than 90 golfers enjoyed at the 7th Annual P.G. Chambers School Golf Classic. Held June 6 at the Roxiticus Golf Club in Mendham, the weather was perfect, the course was perfect, and while perhaps not every shot was perfect, the fun, the camaraderie, and the food couldn t have been more perfect. Perfection has its rewards. The day that began with a luncheon, followed by golf, concluded with cocktails and dinner where spirited bidding in both silent and the special sponsor-a-child live auction helped add to the substantial funds raised by the event. Eric Monsen, President of Monsen Engineering in Fairfield and P.G. Chambers School Trustee and Chairman of the Golf Classic Committee, stated, We couldn t have asked for a better turnout, a finer course, or more beautiful weather. But more importantly, it was a day that will really help continue all the good work that s being done at our school. Neil Kazan, David Nakamura, Trustee, Neil Pearl, and Dick Aboia enjoy the course at Roxiticus Golf Club for the Annual Golf Classic. That work was put into perspective by Tasos Konidaris, father of a Alexandra, a school student, who spoke before the dinner audience, noting, There is no other school, no other place, that could have made such a difference in my daughter s life. The teachers, the therapists, and the technologies they use are helping her every day to grow and develop to her full potential. The event s success was due in no small measure to the generous contributions of more than 50 local businesses and individuals. Susan Seamans, school Executive Director, noted, As a private, non-profit organization we rely on the community to help us maintain the highest quality services possible for our students. It is just so gratifying to see so many people come forward to help us fulfill our mission. In addition to Eric Monsen, Golf Classic Committee members include: Steve Aluotto, Bill Haskel, Charlie Hutchinson, Pavan Mehta, David Nakamura, Hal Sass, Thomas J. Walsh, Renee Gitto, Andrea C. Quigley, and Susan Seamans. Save the Date: The P.G.Chambers School 8th Annual Golf Classic will return to Roxiticus Country Club on June 4, 2012. 13

Chambers School Auxiliary Rookie always had a poem, a joke, or a witty story to brighten our days. She is missed. You Never Know By Helen L. Marshall You never know when someone May catch a dream from you You never know when a little word Or something you may do May open up the windows Of a mind that seals a light The way you love, may not matter at all But you never know it might. And just in case it could be That another s life, through you Might possibly change for the better With a broader and brighter view It seems it might be worth a try At pointing the way to the right Of course it may not matter at all, But then again it might.
