PRESIDENTIAL CORNER Dear colleagues, friends, and distinguished guests: It is my greatest honor to become the 19 th President of AMSSM. As the Founders and Past Presidents that have come before me, I have tremendous pride, commitment and affection towards this great organization, and I will honor this responsibility with care and work to protect and guide our organization in the best interest of our members and our discipline. I d like to share with you my road within AMSSM and thank the many persons who have guided me along the way, and also impart my vision for the direction which lies ahead. But first, I d like to say a few words about our Immediate Past President, Dr. Cindy Chang. I first joined AMSSM in 1999 and attended my first Annual Meeting in San Diego. I was a fellow at the University of Washington, and the energy and spirit within this organization was already evident. The content and discussion during the symposiums was simply impressive. I remember hearing this voice, this one voice over and over again. I watched her present and field questions with honesty and passion. I watched her stand with confidence at the microphone and ask the hard question that everyone was thinking but no one else in the room would ask. It was the first time I met Cindy, and my initial impression was wow, how can anyone be that smart about sports medicine! Over the past many years I have gotten to know Cindy as a friend and one of my closest colleagues. We heard from her last year at the business meeting, as she warmly shared both her commitment to her family and her dedication as a physician. Her sincerity was exemplified in the planning of the Founders session last year in Salt Lake City, where moving dialogue and perspectives were shared from the people we admire most. This past year, I have witnessed her boundless energy, unparalleled work ethic, and willingness to voice high expectations for anyone working with her. At times it seemed the work of the President had become a full time job late nights and early mornings, spending hours each day on behalf of the Board and this organization. At the Joint Commission meeting this year, with leaders from all the sports medicine organizations around the nation, we had a special session discussing issues related to the upcoming London Games. As most of you know, Cindy was not only AMSSM President this year, she is also the Chief Medical Officer for the United States Olympic Team. I don t know how she does it. At the Joint Commission session, Bill Moureau, the Director of the USOC Sports Medicine Clinics, spoke high praise of a primary care sports medicine doctor and Chief Medical Officer that simply surpassed all expectations. I was so proud of Cindy, and so proud that she has been the face of this organization for the past year. From the time I was a fellow, and for many of us still today, Cindy Chang represents the sports medicine doctor we all want to be passionate, dedicated,
highly respected, and with a remarkable grasp of the field. We are so grateful for her tireless commitment to AMSSM please join me in honoring the 18 th President of AMSSM, Dr. Cindy Chang. There is someone else I d like to recognize, and that is our Program Chair, Dr. Gene Hong. Gene and I met while I was working in Philadelphia and have been friends ever since. Some of you may not know this, but he is the Chair of the Department of Family, Community, and Preventive Medicine at Drexel University. His rise within the academic ranks to become a young and successful Chair of an entire department is extraordinary, and a testament to his leadership and many skills. Gene has led and organized a talented Program Planning Committee, and as we ve all experienced the last few days the program has been simply amazing. I personally want to thank Gene for everything he has done this past year preparing for Atlanta we are all grateful. Please join me in thanking the Program Chair for the AMSSM 21 st Annual Meeting, Dr. Gene Hong. To quote former President Robert F. Kennedy: Few will have the greatness to bend history itself; but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total of all those acts will be written the history of this generation. Fellow sports medicine physicians, colleagues, and friends, in this 21 st year of the society, AMSSM finds itself in a position to define the path of primary care sports medicine, and perhaps more importantly, to positively impact change for the patients and communities we care for. As an organization, we have grown to over 2,000 strong, and the strength of our organization rests with you our members. Sports medicine is no longer a new field. Sports medicine has become a comprehensive discipline, and it is our responsibility and our challenge to protect the health and safety of athletes of all ages. As you know, I have a devoted interest in the prevention of catastrophic injury in sport. I believe AMSSM must champion areas that prevent such tragedies, while promoting the benefits of sports and exercise to overall health. We must use our platform and our reach as sports medicine and team physicians to influence the communities in which we work. Volunteerism is often not easy but it is vastly rewarding. In this coming year, I encourage you to reach out and invest to impact something meaningful in your community. There are so many areas event coverage, parent education, youth sports safety policies and practices, fundraising for school defibrillators, etc. collectively we can make a tremendous difference. As our vision statement reads, AMSSM is leading sports medicine into the future. However, we cannot walk this path alone. AMSSM needs to partner and collaborate with sister organizations, both U.S. and abroad, on issues of shared interest. But AMSSM must provide leadership. We need to advance concussion research, education, and prevention, and partner with other disciplines in that
field. But we must provide leadership. We need to uphold the objectives of the pre-participation evaluation, and work closely with our cardiology colleagues to define effective models of prevention. But we must provide leadership. As we look to the future, I believe research and scholarship represent vital areas of potential growth for our organization and our collective contribution to the scientific establishment of our specialty. Within AMSSM, I had the privilege to Chair our Research Committee for four years and support the development of the AMSSM Foundation Research Grant Awards. I have watched with pride as the research within our society has grown in both quality and number. To me, AMSSM is my professional home. I have met life-long friends here, and many of my most trusted colleagues. The organization is filled with brilliant, diverse and talented individuals driving and advancing our field. We are fortunate to have an extremely capable and dedicated Board of Directors to carry out our mission and strategic objectives. Looking ahead, it is critical AMSSM clearly define the value of sports medicine, the importance of medicine in sports and the benefit of sports in medicine. I am grateful to the many persons, Founders, current, and past leaders within our organization that have guided my interest and opportunities. While in medical school at UCLA, I was fortunate enough to meet one of the pioneers of primary care sports medicine, Dr. James Puffer, who at the time was Chair of the Department of Family Medicine and also the 3 rd President of AMSSM. I remember vividly that morning when I had an appointment to discuss my interests in sports medicine. At the beginning of our meeting, I said, How do I become a sports medicine physician? In typical Dr. Puffer fashion, he reclined in his chair, feet up on the desk, and said, Jon, don t let the tail wag the dog. I m a family doc, and I happen to have some expertise in sports medicine. His words have resonated with me throughout my career. Our backgrounds within our primary specialties define us within the sports medicine community. We must never forget our roots, but we must also recognize the growth of our discipline, both in depth and in scope, over the past two decades into areas beyond the primary care arena. Thank you Jim for your years of leadership, vision, and guidance. The history of this organization is firmly rooted on its collegiality and the relationships we make. We should all reflect on the people who have influenced our paths and the mentorship they have provided. I think it is important to take this moment to recognize the many people who have helped me along the way: Mike Henehan Mike is a fabulous educator and clinician, and I was fortunate to train under Mike my first year of residency. He gave me my first opportunities in sports medicine and the clinical constructs you once taught, I still apply today. Thank you for your friendship and support over the years.
Mark Juhn Mark was a fellowship faculty member and was instrumental in nurturing my writing and editing skills. Thank you for all your support over the years. Mike Eshleman My fellowship director, who s perspective and friendship was as valuable as his clinical instruction. John O Kane A friend and a model sports medicine physician, and perhaps the best clinician I know. Thank you for training me. Ashwin Rao Once my resident, turned fellow, turned trusted colleague and friend. Thank you for always being there. Kim Harmon We all know Kim and the many careers she has touched and guided, and her dedication to AMSSM. In my mind, she is the modern day pioneer and vision leader of primary care sports medicine, it s been my privilege to work closely with you. To All My Fellows thank you for giving my career so much meaning and for sharing this extraordinary ride. Stan Herring for your friendship, trust, and guidance. John DiFiori who set the stage for the success of the Research Committee. Jim Moriarity Jim, you didn t train me, but your words have always resonated with me. Thank you for your ever present leadership in this organization, kindness and perspectives, and your continued commitment to mentorship and education. To All of the Past Presidents, but especially Bob Dimeff, Kim Harmon, Fran O Connor and Cindy Chang Your vision has placed us where we are today. To Jim Griffith, Jody Gold and all the staff thank you for your tireless devotion to our society. I also want to thank a few individuals outside of this organization: Ron Courson Thank you for teaching me so much. I can t think of any other expert in the world who depicts the principles of emergency planning in athletics. Karim Khan a true mentor and always willing and able to guide me in the right direction. Thank you for believing in me and cultivating my opportunities. Mats Borjesson for your friendship and collaboration and for showing me the world.
Roald Bahr for setting the standard for sports medicine research and inspiring all of us to pursue the highest level of scientific rigor and achievement. Jiri Dvorak Chief Medical Officer from FIFA, thank you for your sound belief that you can change the world. And to my wife, Dr. Heidi Gray, and my three kids thank you for supporting me through my many endeavors. To conclude, I am indebted to AMSSM and its Founders for their vision, promotion of primary care sports medicine, and commitment to education, research, and collegiality as cornerstones of our society. As AMSSM President, my goals will be to advance and encourage research and scholarship within our organization; expand our partnerships with other national and international societies to support the interests of sports medicine physicians; advocate for exercise and safety in sports for all ages; and guide the continued purpose and contributions of our organization. I will work to provide AMSSM and its members opportunities that advance our discipline and, perhaps most importantly, positively impact change in the communities we live. Underlying our successes are the many friendships and professional relationships fostered at our Annual Meeting and strengthened by our shared interests. I hope to bring the same passion and dedication to this organization as our past and present leadership and am truly honored and grateful to serve AMSSM. Thank you very much.
