Advanced CAD Modelling SolidWorks 2009 & the Use of Network Management Software to aid Teaching & Learning Outline of course topics: - The Sheet Metal feature within SolidWorks enables the user to build a sheet metal type model and to create a development of the model by flattening the model. These features will be explored by modelling everyday items. The application of this feature in enhancing the teaching of geometry will also be explored. - Creating Curved Features explores the uses of splines, helices, and composite curves to model everyday items and geometric problems - Working with Surfaces Surface modelling is used to create faces and features which may not be conveniently produced using solid modelling techniques. Surface tools are employed in situations where they make it easier, more efficient or even possible to complete the task at hand. Surface modelling has many application, including the modelling of geometrical problems relating to planes, lamina and structural forms - Creation of photorealistic images using PhotoWorks and PhotoView 360 will be investigated in SolidWorks 2009. The ability to create to high quality images is an important and powerful aspect of the CAD software Participants will explore the installation, basic functions and customising of the network management software to meet the needs of the technology subjects (AB Tutor is the software which will be used for the delivery of this module) Parametric CAD Modules 1 & 2 Module 1: To introduce teachers to: PCs and File Management Solidworks: What is parametric modelling? Principles of Parametric Sketching Creating a part Digital Media Module 2: Content: Sketching Automatic Relations Inferencing Dimensioning Editing Cutting/Extruding Shell and Revolve Introduction to the assembly environment Completing pre-prepared assemblies 2 Page 2 of 5

Become aware of problems associated with bad practice in SolidWorks and how to solve them Module 5: Solidworks Management Drawings Create and save sheet templates and sheet formats for SolidWorks Drawings Develop their skills in producing Drawings Save SolidWorks Drawings as various file types Print SolidWorks Drawings effectively Develop an awareness of problems associated with Solidworks Drawings and how to solve them Module 6: Creating Photorealistic Images Change SolidWorks systems colours Develop appropriate skills to edit SolidWorks models Understand PhotoWorks in manipulating a model into a photorealistic image 3 Page 3 of 5
Creating a School Website in 5 easy steps using (WebsiteX5) To understand rationale behind and develop the skills required to design, construct and develop an educational website accessible to all Web users. To enable teachers to design and complete a school website by the end of the course using WebsiteX5. For more information on this product visit www.websitex5.com It is so easy to use that schools are putting up websites in a week! At NCTE s Software Central website view other school websites designed with WebsiteX5 and read about the Five Steps project at http://www.softwarecentral.ie/projects/fivestepwebsite/home.html Interactive Whiteboard for Teaching & Learning (Promethean) To introduce teachers to the basics of using a Promethean Interactive Whiteboard. The demonstration session will place particular emphasis on ideas for its use in the primary classroom. Using an Interactive Whiteboard for Finding and Using Curriculum Resources Online To enable teachers to: Identify websites with useful resources for your classroom Saving your bookmarks to access from any computer Organising your resources list so that you can find things quickly Maths Resources Online To enable teachers to: Identify websites and resources for us in your classroom Enhance your teaching and learning by making Maths enjoyable Take Maths outside your classroom Creating Literacy Resources This module looks at a number of ways in which ICT can be used to develop practical literacy resources for classroom learning. It will look at a number of Free ICT programmes/web services that can help teachers design/create/print a variety of practical literacy activities. These programmes/web services are freely available on the internet. It will also look at how to use broadband to access free flash/java/shockwave based content-rich activities on the web. Participants will: Make and print a Word Search using Teachers Direct Wordsearch Creator. Create and print a Cloze Procedure exercise using New English File Cloze Maker. Make and print a Crossword activity using Eclipse Crossword. Look at some free to use on-line puzzle generators It will briefly look at how Broadband can be used to engage in free Content-Rich online interactive Literacy activities Look at other creative ways in which ICT can be used to develop a host of literacy resources. 4 Page 4 of 5
ICT as a Class Administration Tool This module will explore ways in which ICT can be used as a practical tool to aid teachers in classroom administration and organisation. In this module, three different practical exercises will be used to show how ICT can be used to help in the administrative side of classroom organisation. Task A: Creating a Class List using Microsoft Word. Task B: Creating a Class Timetable using Microsoft Word. Task C: Recording and Sorting Micra-T results using Microsoft Excel Classroom Planning for ICT Projects Whatever ICT project you would like to do with your class, you are more likely to make progress if you break down the targets you have set into small steps and then identify the actions you need to take for each step. This process is known as action planning. The purpose of this module is to: Explain the rationale for doing an ICT action plan Demonstrate templates and a finished example of an action plan Allow each participant the opportunity to complete an action plan themselves and share them with the group. An Ghaeilge agus ICT This module is designed as a hands-on exercise, where the tutor will demonstrate various practical tasks which teachers can incorporate into their teaching of Irish. Participants will then try each of the activities, so that in practice, by the end of the module, they will have created a number of activities and exercises which can be used in the classroom. In general, as the amount of resources available for teaching Gaeilge are rare, it is often up to the teacher to create or facilitate creation of resources themselves. Maths Resources This module looks at the many free programs and online web services that can greatly help with the teaching of Maths. This module will look at how some of these programs work and how they can be used in the classroom to enhance the teaching of Maths. It will also look at other creative ways in which ICT can enhance the teaching of Maths in the classroom. In particular these programs also help to reinforce the following key Mathematical Skills: Number Algebra Lines and Angles Shape and Space Measures Applying and problem solving Communicating and expressing Reasoning Understanding and recalling Implementing 5 Page 5 of 5
