Introduction This paper covers the installation and configuration of ShadowControl ShadowStream Server. It covers only how to set up the replication connection. It does not cover the actual management of the replicated files. ShadowStream Server is a file transfer application that allows replication to remote offsite storage. ShadowControl ImageManager should already be installed on the site where the backup images are stored. It can also be installed on the remote site where the replicated images will be stored. This will help with the consolidation and retention of the image files. Download ShadowStream Server Download the ShadowControl ShadowStream Server to the location where the images will be replicated. It needs to be installed on a machine accessible from the site where the backup images are stored. Go to http://www.storagecraft.com/software_update.php The StorageCraft Product Downloads table shows the Shadow Control Installers. 3
Installation These instructions cover only Custom installation. The default installation is a simple straight forward process and won t be covered in this paper. During a custom installation you should only change the install location. The other two options are: ShadowStream service (required) The Console Application. The Console Application is required because remote administration is disabled by default and can only be enabled with the Console Application from a console on the same machine where the ShadowStream service is running. Ensure that Remote Access is enabled in the Console Application. If it hasn t previously been installed it needs to be installed now. Remember that remote access is disabled by default. 4
Configuration The ShadowStream server needs to be configured. Configuration options include: Users Shares on the server Opening the firewall to allow ShadowControl ImageManager to communicate 1. On the machine where ShadowControl ShadowStream server was installed, launch the ShadowStream Admin Console. 2. Select the Admin Connect icon in the menu bar. 3. Authenticate to the ShadowStream service by entering the default username and password: Username: admin Password: password The password should be changed after first login. 5
4. If remote access to the admin console is needed it can be enabled on the Settings tab. After checking the Allow Remote Administration box, a pop-up message will prompt you to restart the server. You only need to restart the ShadowStream Service. Creating Users 1. Select the Users tab in the Admin Console and add the needed users. The options that can be selected are: User Admin You should choose one or the other. If the user only needs to replicate files, then the User right is sufficient. Bandwidth throttling can be set per user if needed. 6
2. Creating a share for the user to access. Shares created in the Admin Console do not need to be actual shared folders. The share will be created within the application even if it doesn t exist in the directory or folder structure on the computer. The share can reside on a NAS or network location. The user created in the Admin Console needs to have access to the network location. o For example: If Joe, a user in the Admin Console, is assigned to create a replication job on a network share, he needs to have rights on the share to create, delete and modify the files. Shares created not local to the ShadowStream Server should be UNC path not a mapped drive on the server. Can cause an invalid share (14) error when trying to connect from ShadowControl Image Manager Testing the User Rights Use the buttons on the bottom of the Share tab to test the rights. a. Select the share you want to test. b. Click the Browse button. c. Select the user you want to test. d. If the selected user has sufficient rights the directory listing will be displayed in the console. e. If the selected user does not have sufficient rights then an error will be shown. Invalid Share (14). f. If you receive an error, ensure that the user has Create and Delete rights on the network share. Note: Share names are case sensitive. Mismatches on the share name can cause Invalid Share errors. 3. A few firewall ports need to be open. This includes control and transport ports o 4363 and 4365 TCP for control o 54363-55263 TCP for transfers. o 4364 (required only for remote connection to Admin Console) 7
It is crucial for ImageManager communication to make sure these ports are open. They must be configured to route to the proper machine. This is especially true if there is a firewall or router redirecting traffic. 4. If bandwidth is limited, or if the base backup images are large, seed the remote location with the base files before starting the replication. If you have sufficient bandwidth, this step it is not required. Connecting ShadowControl ImageManager This section assumes that ImageManager is already installed and that ShadowStream server is also configured. ImageManager can be configured to connect and start replications. Enabling the replication license. 1. Ensure there is a license allocated to a ShadowStream Replication job in the Licensing Agent Task options. 2. Select Update to assign the license to this agent. 8
Creating a Location for replication. 1. Select the Agent Settings option from the left hand column under Agent Tasks. 2. In Agent Settings, select the Locations tab. 3. Click on the green + sign (on the right side of the window) to bring up the Location Settings 4. In Location Settings, select StorageCraft ShadowStream Server as the Type. 5. Enter the location a Name. 6. Enter the server name or IP address. 7. Leave the Port as default. 8. Enter the share name created or used during the ShadowStream Configuration. Remember that share names are case sensitive. 9
9. Enter the Username and Password created for the share. 10. Click Save. Deleting replication locations 1. From the Agent Tasks on the bottom right had corner select Agent Settings 2. Select the Locations tab. 3. Highlight the location that needs to be deleted 10
4. Select the red X and the top right hand side. 5. Destinations can also be added and edited from here. Replication Target for a Managed folder 1. Highlight the Managed folder that will be used for replication 2. In the view under the managed folder select Add new replication target 3. Select the Replication type as: StorageCraft ShadowStream Server. 4. In the location option the location that was created in the Creating a location steps will be listed to be selected. 5. The name of the Subdirectory will be the name of backed up computer in the managed folder. This name can be edited if necessary. 11
6. Performance and Security options can be set if needed. a. If you have (or will) seed the Base images, check the box next to the Don t replicate Base image files option. b. For the Override global throttling setting you can have throttle settings for each replication job. c. Compress data stream does not need to be used if the image is already compressed. d. Encrypt data stream does not need to be used if the backup is already encrypted. 12
