On the next page and on subsequent pages, you may notice some information has already been filled in. This information was pulled from your resume automatically in a process called parsing and placed in the fields by PATS. This can save you some time entering data but you should check all the information carefully to ensure it ended up in the right place. You don t have to upload a resume at all you can simply enter the information yourself in each box. You also don t have to follow any particular format for your resume you can include any information you want in any format you want. Here are a suggestions that can make parsing go more smoothly which may save you time: - Put your name and primary contact information at the top of your resume include mailing address and phone number(s) - List your experience chronologically with your current/most recent position at the top of your resume - For each entry, follow the same format name of the school or organization, location of the school or organization, dates of employment, and description of your responsibilities and achievements - Use the format mm/dd/yyyy (e.g. 06/15/2004) for all dates - Enter all geographic locations using the format City, State like this Providence, RI or Oakland, CA - Don t use the word School in the name of places you ve worked use Nathan Bishop Middle or Nathan Bishop MS rather than Nathan Bishop Middle School. The software is looking through your resume for both experience and education and using the word School can make the software think it s looking at a school you attended. - Include only experience and education do not include other things like objective, overview, list of published works, etc. Remember: all of the above are just suggestions and no matter which approach you take to getting your information in, you should check and make sure all the information is complete and correct.
Here is an example of a page containing parsed data from an uploaded resume: Most of the information made it in just fine the software did make one error though. The candidate s last name was entered into the Primary Address 1 field together with the actual address. If something like this happens to you, you will need to correct it by clicking on the appropriate box, deleting any incorrect information, and entering the correct information see below, Primary Address 1 is corrected.

10. On the Education page, you may again see parsed information as always, make sure the information is correct and complete. Some notes on the Education page: - If your school is listed, select it from the drop-down menu only if your school is not listed should you enter anything in the Other school if not listed box. You will have to select Other in the dropdown box if you want to enter a name of a school that isn t listed. - Please enter your schools websites this will make it easier for people reviewing your application to understand your educational background even if they aren t familiar with the school(s) you attended this is particularly important if you attended a school outside the United States. - While PATS accepts only exact dates ( September 1, 2000 not September 2000 or Fall Semester 2000 ) you can select dates that reflect approximately when your studies took place. GPA on the other hand should be precise. - Many fields are optional only those marked with a red asterisk are required. - You should be prepared to produce transcripts documenting the information you enter here upon request.
