Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program Guide, Curriculum & Observation Log 2014 The Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) Program at the University of Southern Indiana provides a curriculum which includes didactic courses in conjunction with laboratory and clinical experiences. The DMS curriculum consists of 2 years of pre-requisite general education courses, 1 year of General Sonography (physics, abdomen, ob/gyn) course work and 1 year of EITHER Vascular Sonography or Cardiac Sonography course work. Completion of these 4 years results in a Bachelor of Science degree. The student will be eligible to sit for credentialing examinations administered by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). The DMS program at USI is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). ADMISSION TO THE DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHY PROGRAM Prospective students must be accepted for admission to USI before being considered for admission to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program. Applicants must have graduated from high school and have completed all DMS program prerequisite courses with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 (4.0 scale). Program selection occurs annually following the application deadline of September 15. The DMS program application, accompanying required documents and transcripts must be received by September 15 for program consideration. Failure to submit all necessary documents by the deadline will make the student ineligible for program consideration including the admission interview process. Applicants meeting academic requirements must be in good health, be eligible for ARDMS certification, and be capable of fulfilling essential functions of a diagnostic medical sonographer. It is required that applicants observe a minimum of 20 hours in a variety of sonography settings prior to September 15. The prospective DMS student will utilize a maximum of 60 hours observation time equally divided within general, vascular and cardiac sonography settings to become familiar with sonographic examinations, standards of practice and the sonographer s role as a healthcare member. Any re-applicant is highly encouraged to complete additional observations hours. All observation hours must be documented and verified by the supervising sonographer. The student will assume all responsibility for any illness or injury acquired during observation hours. Clinical affiliates reserve the right to deny observation at their facility when time or space is limited. Within the required narrative, each applicant must indicate which area of study they prefer to pursue in the fourth year of the DMS program, Vascular Sonography or Cardiac Sonography. The DMS program is limited in the number of students that may be accepted each year. USI, in collaboration with the clinical affiliates, reserves the right to determine the number of students enrolled in each beginning class. In addition, each specialty area of study, Vascular Sonography or Cardiac Sonography can accept only five students. Faculty will attempt to honor student preference. The DMS student selection process involves a review of all required documents and an interview by the DMS admission committee. This committee consists of the program faculty and clinical instructors from various clinical affiliates. Applicants are informed when to schedule the interview via e-mail from the DMS program director. All interviews are conducted privately and by appointment only. The committee s decision is conveyed by email no later than two weeks after all interviews are completed. Page 1

Diagnostic Medical Sonography~Program Guide ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF A DIAGNOSITC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHER The USI Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program is covered by two federal laws that prohibit discrimination against persons with disabilities: The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Under these laws, the Program may not discriminate against a qualified student with a disability, which is defined as a student with a disability who meets the academic and technical standards requisite for admission or participation in a post-secondary educational program or activity. One or both of these laws also apply to most employers of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers. Covered employers are prohibited from discriminating against a qualified individual with a disability, which is defined as an individual with a disability who (1) is able to satisfy the general skill, experience, education, and other job-related requirements of the position, and (2) can perform the essential functions of the job, with or with-out a reasonable accommodation. Essential Functions are the job duties that an employee must be able to perform, based on factors such as the reason the position exists, the number of other employees available to perform the function or among whom performance of the function can be distributed, and the degree of expertise or skill required to perform the function. In order to successfully complete program requirements, achieve full competence as a diagnostic medical sonographer, and be eligible for employment after program completion; the student must demonstrate that they can perform the following essential functions commonly performed by diagnostic medical sonographers, with or without reasonable accommodation: Access and accurately understand requisitions, orders, charts, directions, and other job-related documentation and communications. Independently travel through the sonography department and to other departments and floors of the hospital. Remain in a stationary position for long periods of time. Assist patients to transfer from beds, wheelchairs, and stretchers to the sonography table and back. Give clear commands to patients and communicate effectively with patients and professional staff; including with individuals wearing masks. Independently access, adjust, and operate sonography equipment. Independently assess the ongoing functioning of the sonography machine and other equipment. Independently assess sonographic images, controls, labels, and observe patients. Work in a sterile environment, prepare sterile fields, and fill sterile syringes. Prior to beginning the DMS courses, admitted students must submit a medical history and results of a physical examination, drug screen, criminal check, CPR certification, immunization records, documentation of current tuberculosis test status, documentation of completion of Hepatitis B vaccination (3 part series) and a serologic response.
