END TO END SWITCHED DATA NETWORK Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) is an end-to-end digital switched network that is capable of delivering voice and data calls to national and international destinations. Due to its integrated nature, ISDN is capable of supporting traditional telephony services including in-dial, as well as high speed data calling applications such as wide area network access, Internet access, data back-up and video conferencing from a single ISDN access service. Telstra provides the following ISDN access services to its wholesale customers: ISDN 2 ISDN 2 Enhanced, and ISDN 10/20/30 CUSTOMER BENEFITS PRODUCT FEATURES FLEXIBLE Full integration of voice and data solutions means end users do not need multiple access products. ISDN solution is an end-to-end switched digital service that supports phone, fax, high-speed data calls and Internet access. SCALABLE Very easy to add additional channels to existing services or even add additional services as the business grows. Multiple ISDN 2 services, each providing 2 ISDN lines, can be provided under a single unique phone number or an in-dial group. ISDN 10/20/30 services offer further scalability by supporting ISDN lines in multiples of 10 lines, and delivers in-dial capability as a default. COST-EFFICIENT ISDN access services help avoid duplication by offering voice and data from a single interface and allow customer to acquire the exact number of lines that will meet their current usage requirements delivering important cost savings. RELIABLE ISDN is a highly reliable end-to-end digital technology based on the internationally recognised European standard or ETSI. 1
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION ISDN service provides an integrated digital access to voice and data networks. It is made up of a digital transmission circuit between the Network Termination Unit at the customer premises and the local ISDN exchange. ISDN 2 and ISDN 2 Enhanced services, called ISDN Basic Rate Access (BRA) services, have two information channels (B channels) and a control channel (D channel). Each B channel carries digitised information at a rate of 64 kbit/s. The D channel operates at 16 kbit/s but has a lower effective throughput because it is primarily used for network supervision of the B channels and to configure and reconfigure the service. ISDN BRA services are delivered over Telstra s copper (customer access) network and as a result may be restricted by distance limitation from the local ISDN exchange to the customer 2
premises - for ISDN BRA service to be successfully provisioned, the local ISDN exchange must have the technical capacity to provide the service and the customer premises must not be so far from the exchange that transmission losses are above the acceptable levels. There also needs to be enough local cable infrastructures available. Businesses requiring more than 2 lines can use multiple ISDN BRA services or choose from ISDN 10/20/30 services, called the ISDN Primary Rate Access (PRA) services, that provide 10, 20 or 30 digital lines (B channels) delivered over 2 Mbit/s transmission circuits. A single ISDN 10/20/30 service can be made up of one or multiple 2 Mbit/s links with a common directory number. Each 2Mbit/s link has the capacity to deliver up to 30 channels and the channels are activated in blocks of 10. When the maximum 30 channel capacity on all existing 2 Mbit/s links is fully used an extra 2 Mbit/s links will be provided. ISDN 10/20/30 services are delivered using the available network infrastructure between customer premises and the local ISDN exchange. Network infrastructure might be copper or more commonly fibre optic cables using optical multiplexing equipment. As a result, with the exception of the remote areas, ISDN 10/20/30 service is generally is available without any restrictions provided that the local exchange has the technical capacity to deliver the service.
