Planning and Implementing An Optimized Private Clod Why Clod Compting? These days, there is so mch hype abot clod compting that it s easy to lose sight of why it s sch an important trend. Clod compting offers IT management and their staffs a tremendos opportnity to solve critical challenges in the data center to better serve bsiness. Today s typical data center is a sprawled, siloed environment with physical and virtal resorces that are not tilized to their fll capacity or flly aligned with bsiness priorities. What s more, the manal reqest and delivery processes of today s typical data center can be painflly slow. Those processes simply can t keep p with bsiness demands for IT services and, in many cases, bsiness grops are rnning ot of patience. In fact, many are plnging headlong into pblic clods, often withot IT inpt and withot considering secrity isses and other fzzy aspects of clod compting. Clod compting holds the promise for IT management to transform their data centers into highly efficient, largely atomated service providers that consistently meet service level garantees, accommodate self-service reqests, allow charging back for services based on actal se, and offer atomated reporting to track and improve clod performance once implemented. In other words, clod compting is the right technology for the times. Bt becase the times are changing at breakneck speed, IT decisionmakers have to retain as mch flexibility as possible when choosing a clod compting soltion. Special care mst be taken not to get locked in to proprietary technologies that limit what yo can implement today, and that may be obsolete tomorrow. Best-of-breed, heterogeneos environments are the wave of the ftre environments that allow yo to enforce varios levels and types of SLAs as yo move forward with yor clod strategy, make adjstments, and add different types of sers and services. It all comes down to the cliché, one size does not fit all. In clod compting, this phrase takes on a whole new meaning. The potential benefits of clod compting inclde: better ability to meet bsiness grops expectations high availability massive scalability lower costs of hardware, software, electricity, heating and cooling redced sqare footage reqirements IT staff that is freed from the brden of repetitive manal tasks and can therefore deliver more strategic vale less hman error better compliance with SLAs better compliance with reglations tility compting capabilities Bt the operative word is potential. If yo are in the planning stages of yor clod soltion, then yo are assessing the ways to realize that potential. It s a critical time. Yo want the most positive vision the best-case scenario to become a reality. So, how do yo make it happen? Clods are gathering in data centers the world over. Bt, nlike Mother Natre s clods, how do yo make yors predictable and consistently attned to yor wants and needs? Clods Come in All Shapes and Sizes Clod compting remains a neblos term and can be defined in all kinds of ways. However, in its ideal form, clod compting is a highly efficient, cost-effective, and intelligent IT service delivery model. Whether pblic, private, or hybrid, an optimized clod soltion is cstomizable to yor bsiness and constantly aware of the varios physical and virtal resorces and workloads in the environment. In addition, the ideal clod soltion offers a level of intelligence and adaptability that can optimize IT resorces on the fly in order to consistently meet or exceed bsiness reqirements. Within the scope of this paper, we are only covering private clod strategy considerations becase, at least for now, this is where most organizations will reap the most benefits of clod compting while maintaining optimal control and secrity. Bt even within this limited scope, there are wide-ranging options and opportnities for migrating to pblic clods or hybrid clod compting environments when needed. There are three primary clod compting service models IT departments can offer their bsinesses: Infrastrctre-as-a-Service (IaaS) IT or a clod service provider owns and administers the backend hardware; the bsiness s IT department takes care of the software and client compting side. Users can reqest and provision key aspects of infrastrctre, inclding processing, storage, networking, and operating systems. IaaS lets sers bild their own compting environment on demand withot reqiring the bsiness to make sbstantial capital investments in hardware. Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) an application platform in a clod. The bsiness s applications, whether in-hosedeveloped or off-the-shelf, are deployed on a clod provider s or internal private clod infrastrctre. Users can reqest and provision their own applications sing programming langages and tools sch as Java, Python and.net whatever is spported by the provider. The ser does not manage or control the nderlying clod infrastrctre, network, servers, operating systems, or storage bt retains control over the deployed applications and may also control application hosting environment configrations. 3

Planning and Implementing An Optimized Private Clod Why Clod Compting? Application-as-a-Service (AaaS), or Software-as-a- Service (SaaS) IT or the clod service provider spplies the applications and infrastrctre on-demand via the clod. End sers simply access the fll application service stack, sally from a browser. The ser does not manage or control the nderlying clod infrastrctre, network, servers, operating systems, storage, or sally even individal application capabilities, with the possible exception of limited, ser-specific application configration settings. These brief definitions convey only part of the story: service delivery methods. That s all well and good, bt flexibility, scalability and availability are what bsiness professionals expect and IT managers need. So, a clod soltion mst spport ongoing, continos optimization to keep services p and rnning at the highest service levels, inclding atomation of decommissioning and reprposing resorces at the appropriate times. This is an important consideration many IT organizations overlook. It s important to keep in mind that clod soltions enable a qantm leap in the speed and nmber of services that can be delivered and still need to be flly managed. Yo mst be prepared to manage all those services day in and day ot throgh their entire lifecycle. That is why an optimized clod strategy is so vitally important when it comes to making yor clod soltion as sccessfl as it can be. Where Are Yo on the Clod Compting Continm? Whether yo are jst starting to feel yor way into the clod or yor first clod implementation is well nderway, it makes sense to inclde IaaS, PaaS and AaaS service models in yor long-term plans. Contrary to an all-too-poplar trend, which is to dive right in and obtain basic delivery of a static clod environment, it pays to develop a comprehensive and optimized clod strategy to ensre yor clod will be able to grow with yor needs as yo expand the nmber of services yo are delivering and managing throgh the clod. Only with an optimized clod strategy is it possible for IT to sccessflly spport and manage clodbased services and resorces at reqired service levels and with maximm efficiency even as the nmbers of service reqests grow. Moreover, an optimized clod strategy incldes the policybased atomation fondation that can bring together private clods, pblic clods and mltiple data centers to provide the overflow capacity that many organizations will want to have in the ftre. To some extent, where yo are on the clod compting continm is a fnction of how many challenges yo re p against today. The following se case areas represent three of the more common stops along the way toward a dynamic, optimized clod soltion. Each se case adds to and bilds on the previos se case area s capabilities. Consider each set of se case capabilities as yo create the optimized clod strategy for yor organization, and as yo evalate clod soltions. IaaS Self- Service/Static Atomated provisioning Standardization of services Static infrastrctre services delivered qickly Pay as yo go chargeback Agile Atomated Adaptive Agile Faster service delivery PaaS /App & Prodction Services Policy-Based Service Optimization (Real-Time Infrastrctre) Atomated lifecycle management redces operational costs Dynamically adapts infrastrctre to meet demand and SLAs Continally re-pack workloads to maximize tilization and capacity Deliver app/mainstream prodction services more efficiently in the clod Atomated Adaptive Increased capacity, redced cost and complexity Interconnected Clods & Data Centers Hybrid Private/ Pblic Clods Mlti-Site Responsive to dynamic conditions for optimal service performance/slas Figre 1. Agile, Atomated, Adaptive: Three key stops along the clod compting continm. Use Case Area 1: Agile Service Delivery Rapid and sccessfl delivery of static IT services and resorces to sers in mintes for the dration of their self-service reqest with atomated allocation decisions, provisioning, and chargeback based on bsiness policies. A difficlt challenge for IT managers today is that IT services can take weeks or months to deliver, instead of mintes or a day the qick trnarond times that the bsiness needs to deliver new offerings to cstomers, respond to market conditions or improve processes. And, of corse, bsiness teams and individal sers don t realize (or care) how mch IT services cost. Agile Service Delivery, the first stage of a clod implementation, can resolve these isses. It can deliver bsiness services and resorces rapidly while tracking, reporting and charging back the cost of services. Agile Service Delivery can be accomplished by designing and implementing a fast, intelligently atomated, self-service, static Infrastrctreas-a-Service delivery model. Key capabilities for an Agile Service Delivery soltion shold inclde: What every organization shold expect from an innovative clod compting soltion are agile delivery and ongoing service optimization and management capabilities to ensre long-term clod compting sccess and ROI. 5

Planning and Implementing An Optimized Private Clod Self-service, portal-based ser creation and management of services, with catalog-based service template selections that atomatically specify available services, the optimal resorces needed, and their costs. This incldes mlti-grop management that tailors clod access, service views and management options to meet the specific needs of mltiple different grops, sers, or admins sing the same enterprise clod infrastrctre. Service catalog templates that identify the bestpractice resorce provisioning amonts and processes for each service, as determined by IT. This is vitally important, as lack of best-practice allocation and provisioning leads to service failres, related bsiness disrptions and higher management costs. For example, Virtal s (VMs) that are set p on servers withot best-practice provisioning can easily end p with not enogh memory allocated for the service(s) rnning on them, and failre enses. Alternatively, withot service definitions in place, many sers will overprovision the resorces actally needed for their service, leading to wastefl nsed capacity. To maximize the vale yor clod can offer catalog templates shold spport the range of virtal machine, physical, and fll application services with the option to define cstom services for certain sers. Optimized service placement ensres the intelligent matching and allocation of heterogeneos resorces via sophisticated policies that model each service reqest s needs against prioritized crrent and predicted diverse resorce attribtes and state. This ensres that the services are allocated the optimal set of physical or virtal resorces from the diverse clod pool optimized to avoid failre, bsiness disrption and additional management costs and headaches. Policies shold be mlti-dimensional, taking into consideration crrent availability and sage levels, historical performance, ftre reservations or maintenance, and diverse resorce attribtes. Those attribtes shold inclde everything from compte capabilities to active software licenses to ensre that resorce allocations are appropriate. This level of policy sophistication can help redce service failres and costs while optimizing resorce tilization and available capacity for other services. It is also key that service placement inclde policies to pack workload on hypervisors to maximize tilization and capacity as it takes advantage of differences in reqested verss actal sage. staff tasks. This also removes hman errors and compliance inconsistencies from the environment, which are leading cases of instabilities, failres and downtime. Atomating these repetitive tasks also ensres the qick decommissioning and reprposing of resorces for new services. $ Chargeback or showback for costs of resorce se by ser, grop, and accont, inclding flexible rates and charging models. This enables IT to re-captre IT resorce costs and gain an nderstanding of IT capacity reqirements and costs for different bsiness priorities as the data center transforms to a service provider role. An important reqirement is delivery of an estimate of the cost of the service at the time of reqest, which helps sers make better informed decisions on the resorces and service levels that will meet their needs and bdgets. Ongoing sage cost visibility helps ensre services and resorces that are no longer needed get decommissioned so they can be sed for other services. Administration dashboard for reporting and management, inclding both real-time and trend reporting and tracking of clod policies, events and activity. This lets IT easily address isses and provides the basis for aditing, performance optimization, planning for capacity, and reporting to the bsiness on vale and service delivery. Agile Service Delivery qickly delivers services and informs IT abot crrent tilization and workload and resorce activity. However, its downside is that it leaves services in a static IaaS mode. It doesn t allow yo to atomatically manage or scale p resorces significantly as demand or resorce conditions change for a service. The intelligence, dynamism, and control simply aren t there. To reach the fll potential of clod compting, yo need capabilities that atomate the management of services that are rnning while adapting yor resorces to the sitation as service demand and conditions change. Use Case Area 2: Atomated Management In this phase, the clod environment begins to dynamically adapt throgh policies based on workload and conditions selfmanaging services to maximize tilization and capacity while redcing management cost and complexity. Atomatically initiated provisioning and dedeprovisioning via workload templates to rapidly deliver heterogeneos physical and virtal resorces sing best-practice workflows instead of nmeros manal IT 6

Planning and Implementing An Optimized Private Clod Manal ways of managing services and resorces that are crrently in place aren t allowing IT staff and management to keep p with IT service reqests, especially at the accelerated service-creation rate in clod environments. In this se case, the objective is to atomate ongoing management so both the compting resorces and IT staff can better scale to keep services p and rnning. By atomating repetitive manal processes and applying resorce, ser, grop and workload policies and templates thereby optimizing tilization and capacity of existing physical and virtal resorces IT can effectively meet service delivery expectations and redce operating expenses. Risk redction is also a key objective, and it can be accomplished by atomating the enforcement of SLAs for clod service reqests with policies that atomatically prioritize reqests and enforce sage limits. This is key in the shared resorce and mlti-tenant environment of a clod. This level of atomated service management eliminates hman error, enables resorce capacity and tilization maximization, and redces management complexity and costs. It frees IT staff for new projects and enables them to scale so IT costs are minimized while service to the bsiness improves. And, of corse, it helps keep bsiness service sers happy, as common resorce incidents are responded to immediately and atomatically, before sers experience any disrption. Key capabilities for an Atomated Service Management soltion shold inclde: Atomatically initiated live workload migrations to maximize tilization with VM migration consolidation policies that monitor and pack VM workloads onto ndertilized resorces to maximize capacity for new services. These atomated VM migration policies shold eliminate VM sprawl and redce the amont of IT staff reqired to manage the growing nmber of nodes and VMs for IT services. Intelligent power management policies that redce power consmption on nder-tilized resorces, or even power down idle resorces and intelligently power them back on in preparation for anticipated workloads. This capability lets yo atomate decisions as to when to consolidate and migrate live VM workloads from ndertilized resorces onto more flly tilized resorces. As a reslt, the power sage of ndertilized resorces can be dramatically redced. Atomated response to common resorce incidents and isses for immediate resoltion to eliminate or redce service disrption and IT staff brden. Yor clod soltion shold provide yo the ability to set cstom trigger policy workflows and actions based on specific events or conditions to standardize management and atomate repetitive response tasks for the infrastrctre. This also frther redces management costs and headaches for IT staff while ensring a higher qality of service to sers as potential service disrptions are dealt with qickly, often before they impact sers. Atomate the reservation and rnning of maintenance jobs across clod resorces to avoid disrption of reglar workloads, redce management complexity, and increase resorce compliance. Resorce sets shold be able to be identified for maintenance and compliance pdating and then have their workloads atomatically migrated off to other resorces dring the maintenance period and atomatically migrated back when the maintenance is complete. This ensres that all resorces stay in compliance so known isses are avoided before they case bsiness disrption. Moreover, all manal workload migration tasks are removed for the IT staff, which ensres that new errors don t get introdced to yor rnning services that were initially ato-provisioned from best practices. Atomated Service Management can improve service delivery by leaps and bonds by simply making yor complex clod and data center environment easier and more cost- effective to manage and mch more efficient. It redces the brden of repetitive tasks and improves compliance while maximizing resorce tilization. Bt it does leave one very important area still left to plan for in yor clod strategy and soltion: dynamically adapting and switching ot resorces to respond to demand and nexpected resorce failres. This last step on the clod continm is critical to meeting SLAs and ensring that the services yo deliver stay p and rnning at the performance level the bsiness needs. Use Case Area 3: Adaptive Clod Services & Resorces In this step on the clod continm, the clod infrastrctre is workload-driven as well as reqest-driven, dynamically adapting the infrastrctre based on workload demand needs and resorce conditions, so the clod is able to self-optimize to meet SLAs. This is a key consideration to enable yor clod to deliver a broader range of services and RO, sch as mainstream prodction services, going beyond jst test and development workloads. 7

Planning and Implementing An Optimized Private Clod At its most versatile, clod infrastrctre is adaptable and elastic so it can respond to changing clod services demand or resorce conditions. It shold effectively drive dynamic and atomatic allocation and optimization of IT resorces and make service levels predictable and consistent withot IT staff intervention. Adaptive Clod Services are capable of this level of elasticity becase they are based on Realtime Infrastrctre (RTI) technology. RTI atomation and intelligence provides policy-based optimization and tning of the rntime environment. What s more, RTI technology redces risk, ensring the services the bsiness needs are delivered withot interrption and with maximm efficiency. Adaptive Clod Services are defined by dynamic service optimization and resorce self-healing driven by policies based on designated resorce states and performance metrics in order to redce management cost and complexity and, most importantly, ensre needed service levels are delivered to sers and the bsiness. One of the key benefits of clod compting is the more cost-efficient and responsive se of IT resorces to enable the bsiness to deliver more innovations, cstomer offerings and streamlined bsiness processes faster throgh IT-based services. This fll vision and vale is only realized when the policy-based optimization is in place to ensre that the services stay p and rnning to needed performance levels, which often reqires changing the types and amonts of resorces available to a service. Where resorces are constrained, atomated bsiness policies determine how resorces are adapted across services to meet bsiness goals. Having Adaptive Clod Services to complete yor optimized clod strategy and ensre SLAs are met can help redce the resistance of some bsiness teams in moving their workloads and services to the clod. Key capabilities for an Adaptive Clod Services soltion shold inclde: Atomatic live VM workload migration policies to maintain performance that can be set to move workloads from resorces as they become overbrdened in order to avoid service performance isses and bsiness disrption. Service workloads shold be constantly monitored and atomatically migrated to alternative resorces when load and performance thresholds are reached, ths ensring contined optimal service and SLA performance. Self-healing trigger policies to atomatically respond to specific physical or virtal resorce prefailre or failre states to ensre needed services stay p and rnning. Constant real-time monitoring and atomated re-provisioning and workload migration ensre that failres are healed before they case a severe service disrption and help ensre SLA ptimes are met. Atomatically enforced resorce reservations and sage qotas ensre availability SLAs are met to redce bsiness risk and ensre satisfaction. These policies can help resolve conflicts between different ser, organization and application service reqests for limited, shared clod resorces, and help to ensre that service levels are met, especially in mlti-tenant sitations. Ftre resorce reservations garantee specific resorce availability for a certain time to meet critical grop or service SLAs. Soft and hard resorce sage limits shold be able to be set and enforced for sers and new reqests prioritized appropriately dring periods of high service and resorce demand. Intelligent clod brsting and data center brsting for dynamic overflow capacity when needed by setting p services on other internal private clods or data centers or even pblic clods via hybrid clod management as yor clod soltion matres. This shold inclde capabilities to atomate migrating services back to yor private clod as capacity becomes available. The Experts Weigh in According to a recent Gartner Research Report, 1 there are many se cases for emerging private clod-compting and service optimization soltions, and nearly as many reqirements. That s why Gartner did the research that is the basis for the report to examine the varios reqirements and help decisionmakers to identify where their data center operations, processes and bsiness needs fit. These, in trn, provide the basis for bilding their clod management strategy and can assist in creating an RFP for clod management tool evalation. The Gartner report stressed the emerging cstomer clod reqirements for integrated capabilities across infrastrctre provisioning, configration, and performance management. Moreover, the report noted that, As service-to-infrastrctre ratios increase, more end sers have the potential to be Look for a policy-based, optimized clod compting soltion that delivers capabilities across all three essential areas Agile Service Delivery, Atomated Service Management, and Adaptive Clod Services. Together, they enable yo to evolve yor strategy at yor own pace, withot management, technology, scale, or performance limitations. 8

Planning and Implementing An Optimized Private Clod affected. As atomation increases the pace of change in the clod environment, constant optimization is needed to keep the system as a whole from drifting toward poor tilization. In evalating clod management platform vendor capabilities in a sbseqent report 2, Gartner evalated Adaptive Compting s capabilities with Moab Clod Site in this area. It is this constant and difficlt day-to-day service optimization that Moab Clod Site provides with easy to se policies. Policies that integrate with yor existing monitoring and management tools to atomate optimization actions. This dynamic service optimization is a key capability as yo look to move bsiness and prodction applications into yor clod infrastrctre now or in the ftre. Maximizing Yor Clod ROI with Moab Clod Site Yo need to be able to leverage the fll benefits of clod compting for yor organization. For that to happen, yor clod soltion mst be agile, atomated and adaptive nlimited when it comes to evolving and adapting to meet yor bsiness needs. Moab Clod Site meets all the criteria to create an ideal private clod soltion for yor organization. It is the clod management platform that accommodates short-term planning that focses on implementing a static, IaaS clod strategy in the data center. Moreover, the Moab Clod Site policy-based optimization dovetails with long-term planning that calls for delivering more complex and mainstream prodction applications in yor clod soltions. And, most importantly, Moab Clod Site policy engine provides the atomation intelligence fondation for implementing a private clod soltion today that has the inherent flexibility to extend to a private/pblic hybrid soltion in the ftre. Moab Clod Site s policy-based clod optimization engine can help yo create an agile, atomated and adaptive clod environment that responds faster to bsiness reqests and atomates across IT processes. Moab Clod Site can manage vital tasks sch as maximizing resorce capacity, recommending the best corse of action to resolve isses, and radically redcing the time reqired to acqire, deliver and optimize flly fnctional compte platforms and services that are responsive to dynamic bsiness conditions. Moab Clod Site intelligently atomates and optimizes across the lifecycle of services in the data center or clod and their resorces. It s the clod soltion that enables: Optimized service placement with allocation and hypervisor overcommit policies that intelligently model and allocate the optimal resorces to prevent service failre, pack workload and maximize tilization. Ato provisioning to qickly deliver complete physical and virtal resorces in mintes with service templates that redce provisioning costs by 60-70%. Chargeback or showback for service and resorce sage to enable pay-as-yo go, inclding flexible rates and charging models by ser and grop, with optional sage qota enforcement. Reporting and management via a cstomizable administration dashboard to monitor clod operations, identify and address isses, and optimize performance with easy to set visal policy controls. Ato consolidation of VM workloads to maximize tilization and redce power costs with an intelligent VM migration policy that eliminates VM sprawl and an ato power management policy that triggers idle servers into hibernate or sleep states and back into idle for incoming workloads. Atomatic maintenance and ftre resorce reservations atomate the tasks to prepare and garantee availability of resorces for maintenance activities and to meet specific ser of grop SLA reqirements. These policies avoid disrption of reglar workloads, redce management complexity and increase the compliance of clod resorces. Ato live workload migrations to maintain service performance, with VM migration policies that move VM workloads from resorces as they become overbrdened to avoid service performance isses. Ato self-healing and incident response trigger policies speed service and resorce recovery by atomating standard processes sch as provisioning replacement servers and migrating workloads, diagnosing, and restarting or reprovisioning if a server fails. Ato de-commissioning of service resorces by initiating de-provisioning workflows and processes at the end of the lifecycle so they can be qickly reprposed for new services. Self-service catalog reqests for services via an easy-tose portal to speed reqest and delivery while redcing IT staff brden and costs. It spports the creation of physical, virtal and complex application services with mlti-grop management 9

W H I T E PA P E R Planning and Implementing An Optimized Private Clod The ideal clod soltion mst encompass policy-based optimization. It s a key reqirement to ensre that services are delivered qickly and sccessflly, and that they dynamically stay p and rnning across their lifecycle so they meet SLAs, with little or no manal intervention. 10

Planning and Implementing An Optimized Private Clod The Power Behind Policy-Based Optimization One of the key differentiators of Moab Clod Site is its ability to intelligently adapt the environment to meet nexpected changes in demand or resorce conditions. This is essential for ltimately redcing risk and ensring that the services that the bsiness needs are delivered withot interrption and with maximm efficiency. Something else that other soltions can t match is its niqe self-optimizing capability. Moab Clod Site accomplishes this with a flexible management abstraction layer that aggregates real-time data across the complex clod and data center environment to create granlar resorce models. It combines this with indstry-leading mlti-dimensional analytic policies that simltaneosly factor workload reqirements, resorce attribtes, SLAs and priorities to drive atomated decisions and actions related to service creation, management, adapting and decommissioning. Moab Clod Site is specifically designed to integrate with heterogeneos environments of physical and virtal resorces, management tools, hypervisors and operating systems, and be able to act as master controller or peer controller, or in a spporting role with other management tools. And, critically important, it is able to look at both yor crrent real-time environment and ftre scenarios. Ths, it becomes mch easier to plan for ftre needs, inclding factoring in resorce maintenance windows and provisioning and deprovisioning times in order to optimize resorce se and energy efficiency. Not srprising, Moab Clod Site is a key component within the world s largest financial instittion s private clod architectre. It s the clod soltion that is letting this global bank consolidate and eliminate redndant and ndertilized hardware driving greater sage of commoditized middleware platforms and increasing efficiency and savings throgh power redction and optimization. As a reslt, the bank is poised to deliver IaaS and PaaS soltions based on application workloads providing cstomers with sperior service and projected savings to the bank of $1 billion in traditional IT costs over the next three years.
