4 INTRODUCTION VET stands for Vocational Education and Training. The key words are vocational and training meaning job related training. School students can combine regular school subjects in conjunction with vocational training. The SACE has been designed to support government policies and legislation that aim to prepare your people for living in a changing world and to help them to make a successful transition from school to further education and training, and employment. The SACE gives students flexibility in their studies, as well as opportunities to gain recognition for knowledge and skills that they have acquired through a wide range of formal education and training, and other learning processes. A key feature of the SACE is the capacity if offers students to include vocational education and training (VET) in their study programs. Strategic Purposes The recognition arrangements for VET in the SACE, have the following strategic purposes: To increase the responsiveness of the SACE and senior secondary schooling to the needs and interests of individual students To enable students to plan and undertake study programs consistent with their post-school ambitions and aspirations To encourage more students to complete the SACE To support students who seek to achieve other nationally recognised qualifications at the same time as they are studying for the SACE. Policy Statement The purpose of the recognition arrangements for VET in the SACE is to help students build coherent and meaningful pathways in the SACE through VET. These arrangements encourage students to complete, or make significant progress towards completing, VET qualifications. The qualification is thus the key means of organising recognition of VET in the SACE and helping students to plan and pursue their pathways. VET that is Recognised for SACE purposes The Board will recognise VET that: Is listed on the training.gov.au website as the national register of information on Vocational Education and Training in Australia Is delivered and assessed by, or under the auspices of, registered training organisations (RTO s), which are registered to deliver and/or assess the VET that is to be recognised Is delivered and assessed in accordance with the VET Quality Framework Can be certified on a transcript, statement of attainment, or qualification issued by an RTO. Recognition Arrangements The recognition arrangements for VET in the SACE will include recognition of: Completed qualifications Partly completed qualifications (for which a student has completed one or more units of competency).

INTRODUCTION 5 SACE Credits Students will earn 5 SACE credits for the successful completion of 35 nominal hours of VET and 10 SACE credits for the successful completion of 70 nominal hours of VET, up to the maximum credit allocation for a qualification, for: Completed qualifications Partly completed qualifications (for which a student has completed one or more units of competency). The SACE Board will determine whether the SACE credits earned for a particular VET qualification will be recognised at Stage 1 or Stage 2 level. The SACE Board will take advice on the level of recognition from recognition panels and/or base its determination on precedents. In most cases a VET qualification (ie. all the units of competency that make up the qualification) will be recognised at either Stage 1 or Stage 2. However, specific units of competency from some Certificate II or Certification III qualification will be recognised at Stage 1 whereas other units of competency from the same qualification will be recognised at Stage 2. In general, successfully completed VET towards Certificate IV and higher level qualifications with a specific industry qualification outcome will be recognised at Stage 2. Student who have accumulated insufficient nominal hours rated at Stage 1, or Stage 2 level to generate 5 credits (ie. fewer than 35 nominal hours) can bank these hours until they have accumulated at least 35 nominal hours for this particular qualification. VET Recognition Register The SACE Board will publish the VET Recognition Register to show, for each VET qualification listed, the: Maximum and minimum number of SACE credits that students could expect to earn by completing the qualification SACE level (Stage 1 and/or Stage 2) at which credits earned for the qualification will be recognised for SACE purposes. The VET Recognition Register will not show every VET qualification available through the VET sector. However, the SACE Board will recognise any VET that is listed on the training.gov.au website. For a qualification that is not listed on the VET Recognition Register, schools and other providers should contact the SACE Board for details of the number of SACE credits that the completed qualification, or units of competency from the qualification, could earn, and the new SACE stage(s) to which it has been assigned. Reporting Students VET Achievements in the SACE Students VET achievements will be formally certified by transcripts, statements of attainment, and/or nationally recognised qualifications (for completed qualifications) awarded by RTOs. The SACE Board will work in collaboration with schools and public and private providers of VET to attest to the veracity of the enrolment and results information conveyed to the Board.

6 SACE INFORMATION What is the SACE? SACE stands for South Australian Certificate of Education. By completing the SACE, students prepare for further learning, work and life, by: Building essential skills and knowledge Making informed choices about future study and work, based on their strengths and interests Gaining a certificate that gives them a head-start on their pathway beyond school. Stage 1 and Stage 2 There are two stages of the SACE: Stage 1 is generally completed in Year 11 Stage 2 is generally completed in Year 12 This can vary between schools and students (eg. many schools offer the Personal Learning Plan in Year 10). How the SACE works Capabilities Throughout the SACE, students build key capabilities: Communication Citizenship Learning Personal Development Work Learning through Assessment Each grade (from A to E) in each SACE subject has a performance standard, describing the quality of work that will receive that grade A student s SACE work is assessed against these standards The standards are the same around the state They help students understand the reasons behind their grades, and how to improve. Flexible Pathways The SACE is flexible, and caters for learning both in and outside school Students can combine study and parttime work, a traineeship or school-based apprenticeship Students can receive credit for SACE subjects, vocational education and training, community learning, and university studies. Excellence The SACE assists students to: Develop capabilities needed for life and further learning in today s world Gain high level VET qualifications for the workforce Gain entry into state, national and international universities.

SACE INFORMATION 7 Universities entered by SACE students National Universities: Flinders University University of Adelaide University of South Australia Australian National University University of Melbourne University of Sydney International Universities: New York University University of Oxford Yale University National University of Singapore University of Cambridge Princeton University SACE Requirements Students need 200 credits to achieve the SACE Most 10-credit subjects are studied over one semester and most 20-credit subjects are studied over two semesters Students need to achieve a C grade or higher for Stage 1 requirements and a C-grade or higher for Stage 2 requirements.

8 SACE INFORMATION Stage 1 Subjects are graded from A to E All tasks are assessed by teachers at the school Assessment is externally checked in mathematics, English and the Personal Learning Plan The Personal Learning Plan Helps students to: Look at different career paths and options Choose the right SACE subjects and study options for their future plans Think about courses and activities outside school that will help them achieve their goals. Stage 1 and/or Stage 2 requirements Literacy and numeracy requirements must be met at Stage 1 or Stage 2 Literacy - from a range of English subjects or courses (20 credits) Numeracy - from a range of mathematics subjects or courses (10 credits) Students must achieve at least a C grade at Stage 1 or a C-grade at Stage 2. Additional choices To complete a SACE, students can choose a range of Stage 1 or Stage 2 subjects or courses (90 credits) There is a broad curriculum, including more than 40 languages Students must achieve a grade in these subjects or courses to gain the SACE. Other recognised courses The SACE recognises learning both in and outside school, for example: Vocational Education and Training courses (VET) University and TAFE courses Community learning (such as the Duke of Edinburgh s Award or volunteer work). Vocational Education and Training (VET) If students prefer hands-on learning or work outside the classroom, they can earn SACE credits for a wide range of activities. Students can learn on-the-job skills while working towards both the SACE and a VET qualification. VET options are available at both Stage 1 and Stage 2. Individual circumstances Special provisions Special provisions are available if a student has an illness, disability or unforeseen circumstance which significantly impacts their ability to participate in an assessment. If a student applies for special provisions they need to provide evidence on how this impacts their ability to access assessment conditions. More information about Special Provisions can be obtained from the SACE website under Students and Families/Special Provisions. If you require any additional information about the SACE, please visit the SACE website or talk to your Career Counsellor or VET Coordinator at your school, who can help you make informed decisions about your pathway options.

ABOUT COLOUR COSMETICA 9 All training is conducted at Colour Cosmetica Academy, 20 32 Union Street, in the East End of Adelaide. Some on-site training can be carried out on your school grounds, with a qualified educator, whom is competent to deliver relevant units of competency from the Hairdressing and Beauty curriculum from your school. This can be discussed with the Principal of Colour Cosmetica Academy. The most appealing point of the VET in schools programs that Colour Cosmetica Academy offers is that Year 10, 11 and 12 students can stay at school and complete their SACE, qualify for university entry and obtain a VET qualification all at once. It is not uncommon for students to complete certificates in Hairdressing, Make up and Fashion Styling, business etc and get a head start.

12 ASSISTANT MAKE UP ARTIST Assistant Make up Artists work with the main Make up Artists to create the look the Director demands. If you re an Assistant Make up Artist, your work covers a range of possibilities, from the basic to the complex. As the Assistant, you go along for the ride, working right beside the main Artist. Each day, you set up and break down the workstation. This includes setting out brushes, refilling supplies, cleaning tools, and, in general, making sure things are hygienic and ready to go. During any type of production, you help with touch-ups between takes. You deliver supplies, keep models, actors, media representatives and clients comfortable, and move make up to where it needs to be. Depending on the size of the production, you might even be able to help with the application of make up, like doing small areas of body paint application, putting on foundation, or even doing the make up of extras. A major part of this job is making sure the model, actor or media representatives make up looks the same from scene to scene and from day to day. Single shots can take days to film, so you need to ensure that the bruise painted on the right check on day one doesn t move to the left by day 15. This is a job that calls for long hours and lots of movement. You can expect to have times of rush, like when setting up or moving to a new location, and also times when you spend hours in one position, hunched over an actor and getting their look just right. It is important to be a proactive junior to get noticed by your peers: this is how you build a professional reputation and gain further work.
