In 2014, we celebrated the 20th anniversary of our partnership, which has allowed over 3500 of Singapore s most talented health professionals to graduate with nursing and health science related degrees. SYDNEY NURSING SCHOOL Sydney Nursing School s vision is to create and sustain a vibrant environment of engaged enquiry of the highest quality and impact; one which emphasises the indivisibility of nursing and midwifery research, education, practice and policy. BACHELOR OF NURSING (POST-REGISTRATION) The Bachelor of Nursing (Post-Registration) programme offered by Sydney Nursing School at the University of Sydney is developed to equip students with critical thinking skills and research understanding. It provides talented students with the opportunity to study for two additional years to graduate with Honours and potentially progress to doctoral work. Programmes and Objectives The major objective of the Bachelor of Nursing (Post-Registration) programme is to enable students to be more confident in their role as nurses in the health care team and provision of excellence in nursing care. Students who successfully complete the Bachelor of Nursing (Post-registration) programme will have: gained a greater understanding of the role of nursing in the provision of health care globally gained a greater appreciation of the value of research to practice and an ability to translate research into practice developed enhanced skills for critical thinking in relation to top nursing practice and advanced their problem solving skills in clinical practice developed greater clinical and professional leadership within the context of nursing workforce skillmix changes and 21st century health care advancement. Mode of Delivery The programme is delivered at SIM Headquarters in a block mode with face-to-face teaching hours for both lectures and tutorials. It is fully taught by Sydney Nursing School academics. Students are also required to have access to the Internet on a regular basis for elearning purposes. Attendance Requirements Students are required to attend 90% of all lectures and tutorials. Progression and Graduation Students need to fulfil the following requirements for each unit of study in order to achieve a minimum pass grade: submit all pieces of assessment and sit examinations if applicable. Met the assessment marking criteria as oultined in each unit of study. meet the elearning participation requirements where applicable; achieve an overall minimum mark of 50%; comply with attendance requirements; and, comply with assignment submission requirements including presentation and academic honesty. Following this process, all eligible students will receive a letter from SIM indicating the date of the next graduation ceremony. Students who successfully complete the programme will be awarded the degree of Bachelor of Nursing by the University of Sydney. The Chancellor of the University of Sydney or a representative designated by the University s Senate confers the degree. A graduation ceremony is held each year in Singapore. Opportunities for Further Education and Career Prospect The Bachelor of Nursing (Post-Registration) programme aims to provide students with a strong foundation in the discipline of nursing and equip them to progress to the Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) or postgraduate coursework study. Assessment and Examination Each unit of study has a number of assessment items. These assessment items vary and include, among others, individual / group assignments, essays, presentations, case studies, formal reports, online activities / quizzes, worksheets, research activities, examinations. Examinations may be held anytime during the semester but are usually held during the University s allocated examination periods. These periods are June (for the semester commencing in February) and November (for the semester commencing in July). Students are notified of the examination timetable in mid semester. All examinations are usually held on weekdays. Students should not plan to be away from their usual address during the examination periods. Maximum Candidature Period / Extension of Candidature / Suspension of Candidature Part-Time 1-year - Students are required to complete the programme within 2 years. Part-Time 2 year - Students are required to complete the programme in 4 years. Students who do not complete the course within the maximum period of candidature may apply for an extension of candidature, approval for which is at the discretion of the Dean. Students enrolled in the programme may be granted a suspension of candidature in certain circumstances. Students who fail to complete the programme are not entitled to any recourse or refund. Minimum Number of Students Required for Class Commencement For a class to commence, there must be a minimum number of 90 students. In the event that the class cannot commence due to low take up rate, the students will be informed one month prior to course commencement date. Award of Degree The Bachelor of Nursing is awarded by the University of Sydney. Accreditation The Bachelor of Nursing programme is accredited by the Singapore Nursing Board.
PROGRAMME STRUCTURE The programme is comprised of eight units of study, each worth six credit points. For the two year part-time programme, students will be expected to attend six weeks of classes in each semester in the first year, and four weeks of classes in each semester in the second year. For the one year part-time programme, students will need to attend 10 weeks of classes in each semester. Each unit of study will include lectures, tutorials, student presentations and specified independent learning activity (eg online activities, directed readings, written assignments, worksheets or research activities). The face-to-face teaching hours for this course will be delivered in a block mode. To maintain optimal tutorial class size, students will be allocated to tutorial groups. The following is an indicative timetable for each study block. However, timetables can vary depending on the specific needs of units of study and public holidays / national events in Singapore. Outline of Units of Study SNGP 3009: Nursing Knowledge and Practice This unit of study examines the historical background to, and current debates surrounding, how nurses have established their knowledge and practice. In addition to examining the historical records in relation to nursing as a discrete area of knowledge and practice in health care, this unit of study analyses and critiques current trends, ethical considerations, and discourses in nursing and how they impact on understandings of the nature of nursing knowledge and contemporary practice(s). SNGP 3001: Advanced Clinical Nursing Assessment This unit of study focuses on the advanced clinical abilities required for nursing assessment of patients, families and communities in the 21st century. Students will learn how to assess a patient s condition, physically and mentally, and to make insightful nursing observation that can inform practice. At the community level, and in the wider socio-economic context, students will study emerging patterns of disease. SNGP 3003: Clinical and Patient Education The field of clinical and patient education is explored in the context of the practice professions and continuing changes in technologies, information and evidence bases for practice. The unit involves a study of the literature on the nature of learned and performed skills, what factors affect changing understandings, beliefs, dogma and practice(s) in clinical settings and subsequently clinical and patient education. The unit is interdisciplinary in approach and has a fieldwork/practice component. SNGP 3011: Primary Health Care and Community Nursing This unit of study examines the major concepts and principles of community health nursing including self care, continuity of care, primary health care, health promotion/illness prevention, community assessment, family assessment, and home care. Increasingly complex and chronic health conditions are being managed in the community. Approaches to the provision of nursing care for people of all ages with acute, chronic, or life threatening illness in settings where they live will be critiqued. Particular attention is given to the home visit process: its therapeutic nature, communication skills and safety issues. The nurse s role in health promotion and disease prevention within a developmental life stage approach will be explored. Students will learn the nurse s role in situations as diverse as participating in national efforts to reduce the Singapore population s disease vulnerability to efforts to support a successful palliation in a community setting. SNGP 3007: Inquiry and Research in Nursing This unit of study builds on the tenet throughout this course that research is integral to all aspects of nursing theory, education, application and practice. Nursing (and midwifery) research will be the focus of examination and critique. A critical analysis of various modes of inquiry will be used to investigate aspects of nursing practice and relevant nursing issues. A variety of perspectives, methodologies and methods that constitute modes of inquiry will be included. This unit will assist students to develop research knowledge and prepare them for future research activities. Opportunities will be provided to experience the inquiry process with reference to clinically related situations or to areas that have an implication for nurses (and midwives) and their practice. SNGP 3010: Law and Ethics in Healthcare This unit of study explores the legal and ethical dimensions in health and social care, with a particular focus on nursing. This module will enable students to gain a critical understanding and applied appreciation of health-related law and ethics, whilst exploring its application and affect on nursing practice. Topics covered in this unit include government regulation of health care, including resource-allocation and professional practice, as well as legal issues relating to professional liability (consent, negligence, confidentiality and autonomy). This unit of study also considers traditional and contemporary ethical theory, moral decision making, articulating moral arguments, critiquing arguments, and exploring values in ethical decision-making. In doing so, this unit of study also explores the values held by professionals, as the concepts of rights and responsibilities increasingly impact on professional nursing practice. SNGP 3005: Nursing Management and Clinical Governance This unit provides a forum for experienced practitioners to enhance their skills and knowledge of nursing management and clinical governance and to develop a framework for their implementation. The structure of the unit will enable participants to explore and critique issues surrounding clinical governance in the context of care provision, organisational climate and culture, quality, clinical and professional leadership and financial responsibility. This unit utilises a better practice (continuum of care / quality / cost / utilisation and health outcomes) framework. SNGP 3004: Clinical Practice Project Students undertake advanced work on an area of practice, or a particular practice, in nursing. The project will involve three stages: first, conducting a review of the available research literature; second, examining other forms of evidence, such as written policies and protocols or actual practices; and third, composing a written report on the ways in which practice can be enhanced and/or further investigated by original research. This project will be highly suited to currently practising nurses whose professional responsibilities and interests include clinical leadership, management of a clinical service or practice development and/or the use of evidence in practice. 8
PROGRAMME SUMMARY Bachelor of Nursing (Post-Registration) Every student will be required to have access to the Internet on a regular basis. Internet access will be required for a number of purposes, including access to online library resources and elearning participation. It is recommended that students spend a minimum of 10-12 hours per week on each unit of study to meet the requirements of the unit. In addition, every student will be given a University of Sydney e-mail account for communication and dissemination of information from University staff and the SIM programme officers. BACHELOR OF NURSING (HONOURS) The Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) is a 48 credit-point, twoyear part-time degree. It is designed to equip graduates with the readiness to undertake research and potentially progress to doctoral studies and a research career. The programme consists of 4 units of study: Theory, Method and Ethics in Research; Honours Thesis A; Honours Thesis B; and, Honours Thesis C. These are all core units of study in the programme. Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) offshore in Singapore may only enroll part-time in order to meet Singapore Nursing Board requirements for their research projects. Programme Objectives Throughout the Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) programme students are introduced to a variety of research perspectives from which an individual research project is developed as an honours thesis. Students will work with research supervisor(s) to develop both the theoretical and practical components of their individual honours project. Students who successfully complete the programme will have: gained a comprehensive overview of contemporary research philosophies and methodologies; enhanced their knowledge of ethical considerations, research design, data collection, data management and analysis; further developed their skills for comprehensively searching, reviewing and critiquing research literature; constructing a concise thesis argument; and presenting their research findings to peers; engaged in experiences that promote personal and professional development through interactions with colleagues and experts in the theory and practice of nursing; and, been prepared for higher degree research studies and/or research in the clinical setting. Students have access to the Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) site on the Sydney elearning platform as well as the Research Hub, which is a shared online space for all research degree students at Sydney Nursing School. Attendance Requirements In addition to the required research work students must undertake, the programme has a face-to-face requirement. This requirement is conducted through a combination of on-campus study sessions at Sydney Nursing School and at the Singapore Institute of Management. Offshore students are required to attend a one-week (5 days) research theory block, which is held at Sydney at Sydney Nursing School. The school is conducted by various academics with research expertise and is COMPULSORY for all research students. The date and location of the remaining study sessions may be negotiated directly with their supervisor. Additional opportunities for learning occur through participation in research events in Sydney and Singapore, recommended reading and discussion with supervisors. Progression and Graduation The progress of each Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) student is assessed at the end of each semester by their supervisor and the Associate Dean (Research). Students who do not make satisfactory progress may be required to show cause as to why they should be permitted to continue in the course. The Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) is awarded in the following classes: Honours Class I 80% or greater Honours Class II Division 1 75% to 79% Honours Class II Division 2 70% to 74% Honours Class III 65% to 69% Honours not awarded Below 65% Assessment Components The final grade awarded for the Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) is cumulative and students are required to complete three (3) pieces of assessment: 1. research seminar presentation (10%); 2. literature review of 5,00 6,000 words (10%); and, 3. 15,000 word thesis (80%). Maximum Period of Candidature / Extension of Candidature / Suspension of Candidature Students are required to complete all the requirements for the course within three (3) calendar years of first enrolment, which includes periods of suspension. Students who do not complete the course within the maximum period of candidature may apply for an extension of candidature, approval for which is at the discretion of the Dean. Students enrolled in the programme may be granted a suspension of candidature in certain circumstances. Students who fail to complete the programme are not entitled to any recourse or refund. There is no financial penalty for scholarship students who do not complete the course. Award of Degree The degree of Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) is awarded by the University of Sydney. Opportunities for Further Education and Career Advancement The Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) is a research degree. Students who achieve Honours Class I or Honours Class II Division 1 are eligible to apply for admission to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at Sydney Nursing School. The research training in this degree is also a valuable asset for any nurse because of the increasing focus on research-based nursing practice, which is a global phenomenon, and the need for strong research skills for career advancement. Accreditation The Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) is accredited by the Singapore Nursing Board.
PROGRAMME SUMMARY Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) The Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) is a 48 credit-point, two-year part-time degree consisting of 4 units of study with the final assessment being a thesis of 15,000 20,000 words. It is designed to equip graduates with the readiness to undertake research and progress to doctoral studies and the option to undertake a research career. Semester 1 2 3 4 Unit of Study NURS 4020: Theory, Method and Ethics in Research NURS 4021: Honours Thesis A NURS 4022: Honours Thesis B NURS 4023: Honours Thesis C Outline of Units of Study NURS 4020: Theory, Method and Ethics in Research This unit of study focuses on the knowledge and skills required for the beginning nurse researcher. It examines (i) the historical and political context of nursing knowledge and practice, the nature and generation of nursing knowledge, and new forms of information gathering and usage; (ii) research design and research methods, including various data collection and analysis techniques; (iii) ethical considerations in undertaking research; and (iv) evaluating and critiquing the literature. NURS 4021: Honours Thesis A This unit provides students with the foundations for undertaking and managing their research project. It explores the practical aspects of managing the honours project, including the supervisory relationship and time management, as well as structuring an honours thesis and developing the thesis argument. Students are also assisted in developing skills for presenting their research, including oral presentation skills. It is expected that students will commence their research project under the guidance of their supervisor during this unit. NURS 4022: Honours Thesis B and NURS 4023: Honours Thesis C In these units of study students will continue working on their independent research project under the guidance of their supervisor, including undertaking fieldwork and writing their thesis. Students will give an oral presentation on their research project to the Faculty. 11
ENROLMENT Application There are two intakes each year in February and July for the two year Bachelor of Nursing (Post-Registration) programme. There is one intake each year in February for the Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) programme and the one year part-time Bachelor of Nursing (Post-Registration) programme. Admission Criteria Bachelor of Nursing (Post-Registration) Admission to the Bachelor of Nursing (Post-registration) requires: 1. a Diploma in Nursing from Nanyang Polytechnic or Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore; OR 2. an approved Diploma in Nursing from an approved institution; OR 3. a Certificate in Nursing from the Singapore School of Nursing or its equivalent; AND 4. current registration with the Singapore Nursing Board, and, 5. O level English or English language proficiency as detailed in the faculty resolutions. Applicants who obtained their qualifications from countries where English is not the standard medium of instruction or the first language, will be required to provide evidence of proficiency in English language. Applicants for the 1-year course are advised not to attempt to maintain full-time employment while completing the course. Sydney Nursing School considers a full-time workload will preclude students from satisfactorily meeting the academic requirements of the course. However, the level of employment a student wishes to maintain during the course is at the student s discretion. The University of Sydney undertakes selection for admission to the course. Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) Applicants for admission as candidates for the Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) require: 1. a Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent awarded by the University of Sydney with a credit average or above (see note below); or 2. equivalent qualifications from other universities as specified in point 1; and, 3. current registration as a registered nurse in Australia OR a country other than Australia; and, 4. English language proficiency as detailed in the faculty resolutions. Note: Qualifications used as the basis of admission must have been completed less than 10 years prior to application. Qualifications older than 10 years will be considered subject to the applicant providing further information substantiating appropriate continuing education and development. In these cases, admission will be at the discretion of the Dean. Candidates who do not meet the above criteria may be admitted by the Dean on the advice of the Associate Dean (research). Entry will be on a case-by-case basis however, a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.25 or 65% (credit average) will be the benchmark for admission. Students are required to provide a brief research proposal when they submit their application. Selected candidates will be awarded up to 50% SIM-University of Sydney scholarship. Test of English Proficiency Applicants who obtained their qualifications from countries where English is not the standard medium of instruction and/ or the first language, will be required to provide evidence of proficiency in the English language. Applicants will need to have an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 7.0 with a minimum of 7.0 in each band or an equivalent score in another recognised test. Information on the IELTS can be obtained from the British Council at Tel : 6473 1111. All tests of proficiency must be obtained prior to application to Singapore Institute of Management Pte Ltd (SIM PL). APPLICATION & ADMISSION How to Apply Application Apply online at www.simge.edu.sg/ge/apply by the closing date indicated. For an international applicant applying to a full-time programme, you must submit an online Student s Pass application form. Your Student s Pass application is subjected to the approval of the Singapore Immigration & Checkpoints Authority. Supporting Documents 1. By the application closing date, you must have attained the minimum qualification required for the programme. 2. Upload the scanned copies of the required supporting documents into your e-application within 7 days of submitting your e-application, or by closing date, whichever is earlier. Please do not upload photographed copies of your documents. 3. Bring along the ORIGINAL documents for verification at SIM s Student Recruitment Centre, Block A, Level 2, within 7 days of submitting your e-application, or by closing date, whichever is earlier. Before you commence the e-application, please ensure that you have the scanned copies of the following documents on hand for uploading and entry in the e-application form: a) A photograph: i) taken within the last 3 months; ii) showing the full face and without headgear (headgear worn in accordance with religious or racial customs is acceptable but must not hide the facial features); iii) between 25mm and 35mm from chin to crown and 35mm wide by 45mm high without border; and iv) in a dimension of 400 by 514 pixels. v) Your photograph image file attachment should: 1) be in JPEG format; 2) file size should be around 60 Kbytes; and 3) preferred dimension of the photo image is 400 by 514 pixels. You may use our online image editing tool to meet the above file size and dimension specifications. b) Your identification documents, i.e. NRIC or FIN/Passport (for international applicants). c) All your educational certificates and transcripts (including your O and A level certificates, etc). Translated and notarised copies of the documents are required if they are not in English Language. Please save and scan the various pages of a similar document type in one file. For example, if your Diploma transcript has 3 pages, scan all 3 pages into one file for uploading. All copies of document should be reduced to A4 size. Applications with incomplete, inaccurate information and not accompanied by supporting documents will NOT be processed and considered. Application Fees and Payment An application fee is payable for each application form that is submitted. This fee (inclusive of 7% GST) is non-refundable and non-transferable. The fee will be refunded fully only if the intake does not commence. Unpaid applications will not be processed. * This does not include all fees related to Student s Pass application. Verbal offers of admission will not be made nor accepted. The Admissions Committee selects students for admission into the programme based on individual merits. Possession of one or more of the qualifications listed does not guarantee automatic entry to the programme. SIM and our university partners reserve the right to withdraw an offer of admission and cancel the enrolment of any person where such an offer was made on the basis of incomplete or inaccurate information supplied by the applicant or a certifying authority. Acceptance of Offer Online To confirm the acceptance of offer, successful applicants will have to adhere to the following before the stipulated deadline: 1) Accept the offer and PEI-student contract online. 2) Submit and verify all other required documents at SIM (where applicable). Course Fee Payment For first payment of course fees only, you may make payment at the payment counters in SIM Headquarters or via E-payment. Payment Counters in SIM HQ The modes of payment available are cash, cheque, Nets, cash card, Visa/MasterCard and/or Cashier/Money/Postal order. We accept up to 4 different modes of payment combination. All payments are to be made in Singapore dollars. Cheques must be crossed and made payable to Singapore Institute of Management Pte Ltd. It should not be post-dated. For Nets payment, the daily limit is S$2,000 or S$3,000, depending on the bank and your personal limit. For credit card payment, the limit is subjected to your available balance at the point of payment. We accept Visa and MasterCard only. Please retain your official receipt. An administrative fee of $5.35 (inclusive of 7% GST) will apply for each reprint request. Private Education Act Under the new Private Education Act, legislated in December 2009, a Council for Private Education (CPE) was set up to regulate the private education industry in Singapore. All Private Education Institutions (PEIs) are required to comply with the regulations under the Act in order to continue operations. Following are the requirements which Singapore Institute of Management Pte Ltd (SIM PL) has put in place: PEI-Student Contract CPE, in aiming to enhance the confidence of students and their parents in the quality of education in Singapore, has stipulated that all PEIs must sign a PEI-Student Contract with students. The contract sets out the terms and conditions governing the relationship between the student and PEI. SIM PL will honour all terms and conditions in the contract and in all communication materials. Students may request for a copy of the PEI-Student Contract from SIM PL or view it on the CPE website (www.cpe.gov.sg).
Cooling-Off Period There will be a cooling-off period of 7 working days after signing the PEI-Student Contract. Students have the right to cancel the contract within the 7 working days and be refunded the highest percentage of the fees already paid if the students submit written notice of withdrawal to SIM PL within the cooling off period (refer to Clause 2.3 of PEI-Student Contract). After the cooling-off period, SIM PL s refund policy will apply. Fee Protection Scheme SIM PL adopts a compulsory Fee Protection Scheme (FPS) to protect the paid fees of both local and international students. The FPS serves to protect the student s fees in the event that the PEI is unable to continue operations due to insolvency, and/or regulatory closure. In addition, the FPS protects the student if the PEI fails to pay penalties or return fees to the student arising from judgments made against it by the Singapore courts. SIM PL has appointed Lonpac Insurance Bhd as the FPS insurance provider. Under the FPS insurance scheme, students fees are insured by Lonpac Insurance Bhd. In case of events, as stated above, students will be able to claim their paid fees from Lonpac Insurance Bhd. More details of the FPS can also be found in the FPS Instruction Manual, available at www.cpe.gov.sg. Medical Insurance SIM PL has in place a group medical insurance scheme for all its students. This medical insurance scheme will have a minimum coverage as follows: an annual coverage limit of S$20,000 per student, covers up to B2 ward in government and restructured hospitals and provides for 24 hours coverage in Singapore and overseas (if student is involved in SIM PL-related activities) throughout the course duration. For more information on medical insurance, visit www.simge.edu.sg/ge/medicalinsurance Refund Policy Withdrawal due to non-delivery of course SIM PL shall refund the entire Course Fees and Miscellaneous Fees already paid by the Student if: 1. It does not commence the Course on the Course Commencement Date; 2. It terminates the Course before the Course Commencement Date; 3. It does not complete the Course by the Course Completion Date; 4. It terminates the Course before the Course Completion Date; 5. It has not ensured that the student meets the course entry or matriculation requirement as stated in Schedule A of the PEI-Student Contract within any stipulated timeline set by CPE; or 6. The Student s Pass application (exclude renewal of student s pass) is rejected by Immigration & Checkpoints Authority of Singapore (ICA). Withdrawals due to other reasons In the event that the students withdraw due to any reasons other than those stated above, refund to students will be an amount based on the table below. Application fee for courses is non-refundable and non-transferable. 2. Requests for refunds arising from withdrawal and change of programme must be accompanied with an original fully completed hardcopy Student Request Form (downloadable from the SIM GE website) and supported with relevant documentary proof, where applicable. 3. Refunds (if any) will be processed within 7 working days upon: Where transfer/withdrawal is initiated by student a Full submission of transfer/withdrawal request via the self-service function in SIMConnect or upon receipt of the original fully completed hardcopy Student Request Form with relevant supporting documentary proof; and b. The approval of requests by SIM PL or Partner University. Requests that are received after 12.00 noon would be considered as submission on the next working day. Where withdrawal is initiated by SIM PL or due to visa permit rejection c. The date of notification from SIM PL to students. Transfer/Withdrawal Policy Students are to put up their request for change of programme (transfer)/withdrawal via the appropriate forms/platforms. SIM PL will acknowledge the students requests in 3 working days and advise students on the final outcome within a reasonable time frame (not more than 4 weeks). NOTES Change of Programme (Transfer) 1. Approval for change of programme will be granted on a case-bycase basis and subject to each individual meeting the course admission requirements. 2. A transfer fee may be applicable for some programmes. 3. A fresh PEI-Student Contract shall be executed between the Student and SIM PL when the change of programme request has been approved. 4. Students are deemed to have withdrawn from the original programme when the application for change of programme is approved; the refund percentage as indicated in the refund table shall apply. Withdrawal 5. Transferring to another institution is deemed as a withdrawal from SIM PL. Confidentiality SIM PL is committed to maintaining the confidentiality of the student s personal information and undertakes not to divulge any of the student s personal information to any third party without the prior written consent of the student SUBJECT to the obligation of SIM PL to disclose to any Singapore government authority any information relating to the student in compliance with the law and/or to the organisation conferring/awarding the qualification. 15
