ISA Interoperability and Security Architecture A presentation by Julien Seligmann, COO, SmartJog SA HPA Technology Retreat 2006 International Developments in Digital Cinema ISA - Interoperability and Security Architecture A test platform for inter-operability and security in Digital Cinema (France) SMARTJOG The Smart Way To Move Media www.smartjog.com FEBRUARY - 2006 1
The ISA Project Commission Supérieure Technique The French technical authority for the movie industry The leader of the ISA project Interoperability and Security Architecture for Digital Cinema www.isa-dcinema.org In Collaboration with Recherche et Innovation en Audiovisuel et Multimédia 2
The ISA Project ISA: An Open Platform ISA Members The Platform: The secured exchange of D-Cinema files between ISA and the Entertainment Technology Center (ETC) in Hollywood The Testing: Open to any lab or distributor wishing to validate the DCI/SMPTE compliance of their D-Cinema Mastering process Manufacturers can test their equipment for compatibility and performance before commercial release. The Workflow: Complete workflow to be setup for the creation and distribution of D-Cinema files Digital distribution as a standard; from post-production to the labs to the distribution to the theatres Complete interoperability testing to develop technical tools that may be missing from the chain 3
ISA Project and Members Eight companies join forces to build a complete digital cinema distribution platform compliant with DCI specifications and SMPTE standards Each member has a specific role: ISA Member Job Descriptions SmartJog integrates the developments of OpenCube (MXF), Thomson (encryption and key management) and Nextamp (forensic mark) for the electronic transport of DCP CN films works with distributors to test the digitization process on current releases CST develops the software for the creation of DCDM and conduct tests with manufacturers and laboratories. CST is also responsible for the overall coordination of the ISA test platform. 4
ISA Members ISA Member Job Descriptions Doremi provides a play-back server compliant with DCI specifications and the hardware for JPEG 2000 compression. Doremi will also work towards integrating some of Nextamp forensic tracking into the JPEG2000 player. Éclair Digital Cinema provides feedback from theater owners, design test procedures, and act as the liaison with DCI and SMPTE DC28. Nextamp works on forensic tracking based on video watermarking. Open Cube provides MXF tools adapted to DCI specifications. Thomson participates in the test exchange of files between Technicolor (Burbank) and CST, and will develop the encryption software and key management in France. 5
Workflow scenario A tentative workflow from a SmartJog Perspective ISA Project Production sends all digital elements to the post-production lab.. In the DI process, the files are exchanged using SmartJog secure servers until the final master is sent to the lab. The master file is converted to a DCP file and a KDM key is created to be sent to the cinema with the file for secure usage The file is linked with the KDM key and is sent to the cinema server for play-out on the video projector. 6
