2 HbbTV Overview HbbTV v1.0 and v1.5 Open platform standard to deliver content over broadcast and broadband for TVs and STBs Includes capabilities for catch-up TV, Video-on-Demand, traditional broadcast and interactive services Enables premium VoD and QoE through the French TNT 2.0 spec (DVB-T/OTT) with Marlin DRM and PlayReady DRM Built on pre-existing standards and codecs already available in TVs and STBs In use today in France, Germany and Spain, Netherlands, Poland and Czech Republic, Scandinavia, other countries committed or considering use HbbTV v1.0 standardized through the ETSI TS v1.1.1 specification 2

7 File Format Requirements For A/V HTTP streaming/delivery HbbTV references dedicated file formats: HbbTV v1.0 (ETSI TS v1.1.1) Both MPEG-2 TS as well as plain MPEG-4 File Format (ISOBMFF) can be used MPEG-4 File Format seems to be more future-proof for streaming with HbbTV HbbTV v1.5 (ETSI TS v1.2.1) Additionally: a modified version of the MPEG DASH ISOBFF Live Streaming Profile ISOBFF = ISO Base Media File Format 8

8 Motivation for MPEG DASH Problem: 20+ different technology platforms for OTT None, or just very limited multichannel audio capability Almost no interoperability many gaps to close The absence of an universal delivery standard for connected devices resulted in fragmented format compatibility. 9

Media Presentation: Collection of data that establishes a bounded or unbounded presentation of media content. 13 Interesting aspects for the usage of TV / Media consumption profiles changed over time HbbTV can be a method to regain viewers attention which drifts towards 2 nd screen It can probably be used to secure revenue streams from (linear) advertisement New opportunities for additional revenue streams, e.g. through repurposing archive HbbTV puts broadcasters in control of the content also via OTT Pole Position signaling for broadcaster s OTT content Uniform APIs and functionality across CE manufacturers product Unlike for broadcast services, for OTT regulatory flexibility exists!
