Integrative Medicine: THE BEST ELEMENTS OF HEALTH CARE FOR YOUR PATIENTS Integrative medicine is the combination and coordination of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) with conventional care. It treats the entire person and defines health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. By blending the best elements of CAM therapies and self-care strategies with the care you provide, The Center for Integrative Medicine offers a safe, conservative and holistic approach to health care. A wide variety of patients ranging from those with serious diseases to healthy patients who want to prevent disease and maintain wellness may benefit from this integrative approach. CONVENTIONAL (western) medicine provided by physicians is integral to a patient s overall wellness and can help treat a variety of conditions. Integrating CAM and lifestyle modification into the plan of care may enhance the efficacy of conventional Western approaches. INTEGRATIVE medicine

An Optimized Approach to PERSONAL WELLNESS The wellness and healing of the whole person mind, body and spirit is at the core of the vision and philosophy of The Center for Integrative Medicine at University of Colorado Hospital. The conventional Western care you provide your patients will be augmented through the use of evidencebased CAM therapies and counseling on lifestyle modification. By creating personalized treatment plans and combining CAM therapy, self-care strategies and Western medicine, a wide variety of patients with a wide variety of conditions may be treated and helped. ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE refers to the practice of seeking and using therapies not historically found in U.S. hospitals or taught in U.S. medical schools, such as acupuncture, massage, chiropractic, yoga and use of herbal supplements. The term alternative medicine implies that these therapies are used in place of conventional Western care. COMPLEMENTARY medicine is the practice of using alternative medicine therapies in addition to or to complement traditional conventional care. In the community, however, CAM therapies are rarely coordinated with the conventional care that the patient is receiving. The Center for Integrative Medicine s goal is to provide patients with truly safe, comprehensive and effective CAM therapy. Practitioners will work with you and other health care providers to ensure that therapy provided at The Center for Integrative Medicine does not interfere or conflict with any of the treatments already prescribed to the patient. To best promote healing and to actively engage patients in their own health care, patients are encouraged to follow lifestylechange approaches and self-care regimens. What Makes the center Unique? The Center for Integrative Medicine is the first of its kind in the region. Housed within the world-class University of Colorado Hospital, services go beyond stand-alone complementary and alternative medicine therapies. Finding the correct balance of evidence-based CAM therapies, lifestyle changes and conventional treatments is the clinical goal for each patient. The Center for Integrative Medicine s board-certified physicians and their colleagues develop and supervise treatment plans in coordination with you and the patient s other health care providers. Professional practitioners work in concert with one another in order to provide the safest and most effective health care possible. The Center for Integrative Medicine s practical and conservative approach to CAM therapy saves your patients money, while enabling them to take responsibility for their health and providing them the best chance for successful results.

Integrative Medicine benefits you and your patients The therapies offered at The Center for Integrative Medicine complement and enhance the regimen I have prescribed, as well as the overall health of my patients. Deb Gothard Nurse practitioner University of Colorado Hospital Integrative medicine can help nearly everyone. By offering a wide range of therapies and lifestyle strategies, The Center for Integrative Medicine provides positive and effective treatment for many conditions. The Center for Integrative Medicine is designed to augment the care that you provide. While CAM therapies help a variety of conditions, they should never replace the treatment provided by a physician. Conditions that can benefit from integrative medicine include: ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION CANCER Chronic Pain Fatigue and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Fibromyalgia Headaches Infertility/women s Health Overall Wellness/Prevention

I feel more confident that my patients who are adding alternative therapies to their treatment regimen are doing so in a safe and above-the-board fashion. Dr. Christina Finlayson Surgical Oncologist and Medical Director of the Dianne O Connor Thompson Breast Center at University of Colorado Hospital Sometimes there are complex patients with multiple medical problems who are not feeling well, despite treatment. The Center for Integrative Medicine can be just the answer. Dr. Adele Sykes Capitol Hill Internal Medicine The Center for Integrative Medicine offers physician-supervised CAM therapy you can trust. Today, almost 50% of adults in the U.S. seek CAM therapy. With CAM therapy s rising popularity, a vast number of new community clinics have opened. While these clinics do offer CAM therapy, it is difficult to know the qualifications and intentions of the practitioners who prescribe and provide treatment. It is rare to find a clinic that is as devoted to safe, conservative and comprehensive therapy as The Center for Integrative Medicine. It is also uncommon to find CAM centers in the community that are willing to fully coordinate the patient treatment they provide with you. All of the therapies provided at The Center for Integrative Medicine are evidence based and administered by certified practitioners. Furthermore, because the care is physician supervised, CAM therapy is never overused or misused. Integrative Medicine can help both patients and physicians. Whether you re struggling to find effective treatment for a patient s complex condition, or steering a curious patient in the right direction, The Center for Integrative Medicine can provide solutions that both you and your patients can trust. ALMOST 50% OF ADULTS IN THE U.S. SEEK CAM THERAPY

a staff that complements your care our medical DIRECTOR The Center for Integrative Medicine s medical director, Dr. Lisa Corbin, is board certified in internal medicine. In 2001, she began directing The Center for Integrative Medicine. Dr. Corbin s focus on CAM therapy and personal wellness is driven by her desire to provide knowledgeable advice to patients and to empower them to take responsibility for their health. Dr. Corbin works with your patients in a consultative capacity. She never assumes primary care of a patient, and the therapies she recommends are meant to augment, not replace, your prescribed treatments. Dr. LISA CORBIN our certified staff All practitioners at The Center for Integrative Medicine are certified to the highest level and are experienced providers of CAM therapy. Furthermore, the entire staff works together to ensure that they provide patients with the most productive, efficient and safe care possible. A Complement to You After your patients first visit, Dr. Corbin will establish communication with you through a personal letter. The Center for Integrative Medicine s staff will maintain this communication for as long as treatment is recommended and provided. This ensures that they can work with you to complement the treatments you provide.

QUALITY SERVICE AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE While CAM therapies can be expensive, The Center for Integrative Medicine provides your patients the best service for their dollar. Not only are prices comparable with the rates found at community clinics, but a conservative plan of care will save patients money in the long run. Instead of overusing or continuing ineffective treatment, practitioners at The Center for Integrative Medicine may actually dissuade patients from any unnecessary, unsafe and expensive CAM therapies they may have been considering. Additionally, our focus on self-care techniques and lifestyle modification decreases patients need for long term CAM therapy use.
