English Linguistics: Recommended Reading (2005) 1 English Linguistics: Recommended Reading This list contains a selection of textbooks and reference works covering the major areas of historical and synchronic English linguistics. Most of these areas will be briefly touched upon in the introductory courses you attend at the beginning of your studies, and some areas will be covered in depth in seminars and lectures. In conjunction with and in addition to coursework requirements, you should widen and deepen your knowledge of English linguistics with the help of the books recommended here. These works are largely introductory in nature and can, for the most part, be consulted or studied (and understood!) without any outside help. The list also contains some important comprehensive texts and works of reference (marked *). Besides being a useful guide to reading throughout your studies, the Recommended Reading list should also help you with the compilation of the reading list you are required to submit for your final examinations (please consult the Merkblatt: Lizenziatsprüfungen in Englischer Sprachwissenschaft available at the secretary s). Please note, finally, that the present list contains recommended rather than obligatory reading; you are free to read other works. You will find that the bibliographies contained in the works listed here provide useful suggestions for alternative or further reading. 1986, revised 1988, 1991, 1999, 2005 Prof. Dr. Andreas Fischer Prof. Dr. Udo Fries Prof. Dr. Andreas H.
