1 Oxford Dictionary of Current Idiomatic English The most comprehensive and detailed survey available of this very important area of English, and an ideal complement to any general English dictionary. ALREADY AVAILABLE Volume 1: Verbs with Prepositions and Particles A. P. Cowie and R. Mackin Records and describes 9,000 phrasal verbs - each entry supported by illustrative sentences.,, COMING SOON Volume 2: Phrase, Clause and Sentence Idioms This volume deals with all those modern English idioms which are structurally different from the grammatical category covered in Volume 1. The idioms (whether internally fixed or variable) range from short phrases such as 'light relief to more complex expressions such as 'all this and heaven too'. 2 Error Analysis and interlanguage Professor S. Pit Corder This book stands as a major contribution to the study of interlanguage theory, now acknowledged to be of central importance in applied linguistics. This collection of papers is divided into two parts with six papers in each. The first part deals with error analysis; the learner's systematic errors are significant because they reveal how far he has progressed and provide useful evidence of the processes by which a language is learnt. The second part of the book deals with interlanguage; the interlanguage of language learners have important features in common, which they share with other simplified systems such as mother talk, foreigner talk, and pidgins. There is an introduction placing the whole work in historical perspective and indicating prospective developments. Professor Pit Corder is an authoritative figure in applied linguistics and these papers reveal his thinking over the past ten years. For further information and a prospectus please write to English Language Teaching Dept., Oxford University Press, Walton Street, Oxford 0X2 6DP. Oxford University Press
3 OXFORD JOURNALS Applied Linguistics Edited by J. P. B. Allen, Bernard Spolsky, and H. G. Widdowson Applied Linguistics is concerned with the relationship between theory and practice, and this journal covers work which applies the results of theoretical studies to practical problems. Its aim is to promote a principled approach to language education and other language-related concerns by encouraging inquiry into the relationship between theoretical and practical studies. Articles are welcomed in such areas as first and second language learning and teaching, bilingualism and bilingual education, discourse analysis, language teaching methodology, language planning, language testing, inter-language studies, translation, stylistics and lexicography. With reviews also of books in these fields, the journal is of central interest to all who seek a clear and informed understanding of how applied linguistics acts as a mediating area of inquiry between the theoretical and practical domains of language study. One of the features of Applied Linguistics will be a section of notes and discussion which will give an opportunity for readers to make short and relatively informal comments on the articles and reviews published in the journal and on other matters of current interest in the field. Early issues of the journal included: Michael Canale and Merill Swain: The theoretical bases of communicative language teaching and testing. Wilga Rivers: Foreign language acquisition: where the real problems lie William Rutherford: Aspects of pedagogic grammar Michael Breen and Christopher Candlin: The essentials of a communicative curriculum in language teaching Richard Schmidt and Jack Richards: Speech acts and second language learning Subscriptions to Volume (three issues) UK 19 US $44 Elsewhere 22 Single issues: UK 8 US $18 Elsewhere 9 Published in association with the American Association for Applied Linguistics and the British Association for Applied Linguistics by the Oxford University Press
