EXPLANATORY NOTE 14th CONVOCATION 2015 The Convocation The convocation, a long established tradition in universities all over the world, is a great celebration observed by academia where degree candidates are ;yesented by the university faculty and administration to the degree awarding body of the university and 'Nhere degrees are ceremonially awarded. Th e (; ~an c ellor of the university heads thi s body and onfers the degrees as recommended. Degree Awarding Authority The Chancellor or when authorized by him the Vice Chancellor or any other appropriate person, confers eegnoes to til e grad uating candidates on approval/recommendation by the Academic Council of ti1e University, headed by th e Vice Ch ancell or. The Academic Procession The Academic Procession is an essential part of convocations all around the world. It is a colorful but solemn event where graduating students, fa culty members, members at the Academic Council; members of the Syndicate, members of the Board of Trustees, and sen ior administrative staff of the university participate. The participants in their ceremonial dress join the cc;nvocation procession and enter the convocation ven ue. The Convocation Marshal leads the procession into the venue. The degree candidates take their seats in an area of the venue reserved for them. r:dculty members join ti"e procession in ascending order of seniority. They enter the venue and ta ke thei, ~; fo d t s alongside the de [~re e candidates. Th ey are k'!i') wed by the members of the.academic Council and Sj :ldlcate. T!'e Chancellor in R procession preceded b \1 the S!~ e c i al Guest; the Vice Chancelior, the Presidc:;t.:;f the Board of Trustees, the Pro Vice Chancelior, the CC)!1vocation Speaker an d the members of the Bnard of Trustees of, enter the Cunvociltion venu e. Once the procession rlas reached the design ated area ~. and all are in place, the formal convocation ce remony begins. The Vice Chancellor, President, Board of Trustees and Convocation Speaker deliver their speeches. Then the graduating candidates are presented to the Chancellor for the conferment of degrees. Special Awards and Gold Medals for academic achievements are also awarded at th is time. A student selected from amongst the graduating class as the Valedictorian addresses the gathering; the Special Guest then delivers his/her address. Finally, the Honorable Chancellor of the University addresses the Convocation. The Convocation Marshal conducts the entire ceremony. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the Chancellor, the Special Guest, the Vice Chancellor of East West University, the President of the Board of Trustees of and other dignitaries leave the site of the ceremony in procession, followed by the members of the Syndicate, Academic Council, faculty and graduating students. The ceremony concludes when the procession departs from the ven ue. This is the conclusion of the first session of the Convocation Ceremony. In the second session, the Vice Chancellor of gives certificates to the graduates on behalf of the Chancellor. Academic Apparel The academic apparel of has been specially designed in line with the academic rega lia used in most American and Commonwealth ~ Iliversities. The gowns worn by pa rticipants are generally black, but their designs vary. The different coiors of the tassels and the hoods distinguish faculty members of one department fro m those of other c!eoartments. The hood, which resembles the medieval cowl, is the most distinctive feature of the academic regalia. Its siltin panel is visible from the front and indicates the general field of a degree by its color. The Convocation apparel for all bachelor degree candidates is black and they don black square mortarboards on their heads. Logo Th e logo of has be en designed to reflect the chief objective of the university, which is the EAST8"'M WEST. :?~ UijlVOOTY J dissemination of modern and quality education at a rea sonable cost. The overall structure pointing upwards signifies human development towards a higher quality of life. The lower right hand white portion includes the globe and represents enlightenment through acquisition of knowledge from all over the world. The outflow of the motto, "excellence in education" connotes the creation of knowledge that is boundless. The color of the EWU logo is deep blue. Flag The color of the EWU flag is deep blue and a pearl white EWU emblem and fifteen stars are placed on the body of the flag. Departmental Buntings Different academic departments have their own colored satin buntings. The colors are: Business Administration: Sea Green Economics: Olive Green English: Lilac Social Relations : Blue Law: Deep Purple Applied Statistics: Sky Blue Computer Science and Engineering:Golden Yellow Electronics and Communications Engineering : Indigo Electrical and Electronic Engineering: Pearl White Pharmacy: Orange Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology: Grey University Bunting It has a deep blue field with a pearl white EWU emblem in the middle. Flags and buntings are displayed at different places during the Convocation. Academic Awards For excellent academic achievement the following awards are given to students at the Convocation ceremony as per the policy mentioned below: 1. Applications are first scrutinized at the --:-ental level, and then processed through the Faculty Recruitment Committee of the university.
