Since the early 1980s, Malaysian private higher educational institutions have collaborated with reputable universities from countries like the United Kingdom, the United States, New Zealand and Australia. Unique degree programmes such as 2+1 twinning degrees (where students study 2 years in Malaysia and 1 year at the overseas host university) and 3+0 degrees (where the entire foreign university degree programme is taught in Malaysia) offer international students abundant overseas Bachelor s degree options that meet their budget and academic needs. 4 2+1 Twinning Degree Programmes a. 2+1 Twinning Degree Programmes In a 2+1 or 1+2 twinning programme, students can pursue either 1 year; 1½ years; 2 years; or 2½ years at a private higher educational institution in Malaysia, out of a 3-year degree programme before going to the twinning partner university overseas to complete the remaining modules of the course. Upon fulfilling the graduation requirements, the students would be awarded the partner university s degree qualification. Malaysian educational institutions collaborate primarily with well-known universities from the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States, New Zealand as well as France. Benefits of a Twinning Degree Programme Students acquire a foreign university degree qualification with substantial savings on tuition fees and living expenses for the number of years spent studying in Malaysia. They also acquire the learning experience of two countries. For example, if you enrol in Malaysia for an engineering twinning degree programme that offers three years of study in Malaysia with the last year in Australia (i.e. 3+1 twinning degree), you may save up to AUD60,000 (USD46,500) in tuition fees and living costs compared to when you do the entire 4-year degree in Australia! 8 Advanced Standing or Credit Transfer Advanced Standing or credit transfer arrangements with universities from the UK, USA, Australia, Canada, etc. have been developed by private higher educational institutions in Malaysia since the early 1980s. An Advanced Standing Programme means that a private higher educational institution s internal diploma (or a particular degree transfer course) is recognised with advanced standing entry status by one or more partner foreign universities, in terms of credits exemption given for advancing into their bachelor s degree programmes. Therefore, students who have completed a course with advanced standing status can gain admission into the second or third year of the degree programme overseas. Advanced Standing Programmesb. The Overseas Degree Pathway through Currently, besides the American Degree Transfer Programmes, there are also Australian Degree Transfer Programmes, UK Degree Transfer Programmes and Canadian University Transfer Programmes offered by private higher educational institutions in Malaysia. 12 3+0 Foreign Bachelor s Degree Programmes c. 3+0 Foreign Bachelor s Degree Programmes A 3+0 foreign bachelor s degree programme is an extension of a twinning programme. Under a 3+0 arrangement, a bachelor s degree programme from a leading foreign university is conducted at a private higher educational institution in Malaysia. A student is therefore able to complete their course entirely in Malaysia. Since 1998, many long-established Malaysian private institutions of higher learning have gained the confidence and trust of universities in countries like the United Kingdom, Australia, France and the United States. Consequently, these universities allow selected Malaysian private educational institutions to conduct their university degree programmes entirely in Malaysia. Upon graduation, students will be awarded a qualification from the foreign partner university. An example of tuition fees for a 3-year UK Engineering degree in Malaysia is about USD13,100 (for 3 years) as compared to 9,000 (USD15,690) per year or about 27,000 (USD47,000) (for 3 years) in the UK. 12 TWINNING DEGREE PROGRAMMES
