Hand-outs A three-ring folder to keep all of your work book material, hand-outs, and homework organized Web page: www.mhhe.com/dnk, The web page will open up to editions three and four. Open edition 4, it does correspond to edition 5 of your text, although, the page numbers vary slightly. Course Objectives and Goals In German 2 you will continue to develop your linguistic skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Taking together these four skills constitute "fluency", and they are the primary course objectives of German 1-3. You cannot expect to become fluent

2 overnight, but if you study intensively - even for short periods of time on a regular basis - you can easily master the vocabulary and structures in each chapter of Deutsch, na klar!- a textbook designed to achieve communicative competence. In addition to the four linguistic skills, you will also reach an increasing familiarity with the culture of the German-speaking world. Total Physical Response (TPR) To make Ger. 2 a pleasurable experience for you, I will introduce a teaching method called "Total Physical Response" early on in the course. "TPR" will have you listen to commands and actually perform them; it may be used throughout the entire semester. Deutsch, na klar! Workbook. Most of your written homework is in this Workbook. Please do the exercises, then check yourself for correction by using the answer key in the back of the book. Correct your answers with a different color pencil or pen, so I am able to distinguish between your first work and your corrections. The pages of the Workbook will be handed in at request usually when you reach the end of a chapter in your textbook. Performance Objectives for German 2: 1. Listening and reading ability, recognizing meaning and usage of all vocabulary items through Chapter 10. e) Ability to use in simple spoken or written sentences the structures and vocabulary items through Chapter 10. f) Practice German often, even for short periods of time - but remember, regularly. g) Chose a partner with whom you can practice German outside of the classroom and perform skits. Video I will use several old videos I selected just for fun. Some homework might result from it. Some test material might be taken from these videos. Tests: Your instructor will administer at least 4 Quizzes (approximately 25-30 minutes each). There will also be 1 Comprehensive Examination (approximately 40-45 minutes) and a Final Examination. Quizzes, Comprehensive Examination, and the Final Examination will not be re-tested, unless you have a valid excuse for being absent during the time when the test was given. All examinations of German 2 require that you answer questions about the stories, the cultural readings, and other materials I introduced. I might give some Pop-quizzes, if necessary. There will be an oral quiz for you and your partner. The oral quiz is part of the final examination. Homework For assignments follow the syllabus attached to this course outline. In addition do all activities from the Workbook and Language Manual unless I tell you in advance which ones to omit. Please notice the following: 1. All class assignments are to be prepared for the class period indicated. 2. The assignments listed in the Syllabus are maximum assignments. I might eliminate some of them. 3. The Workbook assignments will not be discussed and practiced in class.

3 Skits. There will be several skits during the semester. You prepare them with your partner/s. Your instructor will suggest topics to you or discuss them with you if you have your own ideas about skits. Bring props for the skits. They help you to remember your lines. Please do not read the lines but know them by heart. Course Policies: Bring your textbook and the Syllabus to the class. I expect you to be on time either for appointments or for the lessons. If you have to be late, come. Better late than not at all. You may miss two classes unexcused, additional absences without a valid excuse will lower your course grade up to 15%. Class participation is essential. I will ask you to speak with each other in German and to find partners with whom you can practice German outside of the classroom. Periodically I will ask you to write things on the black board. During TPR you will physically respond to the commands given by a classmate or me. Academic integrity is a basic guiding principle for all academic activity at The Pennsylvania State University, and all members of the University community are expected to act in accordance with this principle. Consistent with this expectation, the University's Code of Conduct states that all students should act with personal integrity, respect other students' dignity, rights, and property, and help create and maintain an environment in which all can succeed through the fruits of their efforts. Academic integrity includes a commitment not to engage in or tolerate acts of falsification, misrepresentation or deception. Such acts of dishonesty violate the fundamental ethical principles of the University community and compromise the worth of work completed by others. Consequences of academic dishonesty: The instructor may assign an academic sanction ranging from failure on the assignment to failure in the course. The instructor

4 reports each academic sanction to the Office of Judicial Affairs, which keeps a record. Students can appeal academic sanctions to the Committee on Academic Integrity through the Office of Academic Affairs. In more serious cases of academic dishonesty, the Office of Judicial Affairs may apply disciplinary sanctions in addition to the academic sanctions. These may range from automatic failure for the course to probation, suspension, or expulsion from the University. An "XF" grade is a formal University disciplinary sanction that indicates on the student's transcript that failure in a course was due to a serious act of academic dishonesty. (Policies and Rules for Students, Section 49-20.) Tentative Syllabus This tentative syllabus is designed so that you will be able to familiarize yourself with the new materials for each day in advance. Note that I do not assign vocabulary learning in particular. You must learn the new words when you do the numerous activities and exercises in your books. Avoid handing in late assignments, if for valid reasons you could not do your assignment on time, you may hand in assignments by placing them into a blue folder marked German 2. The folder is in my mailbox at 144 LRC. I reserve the right to refuse acceptance of any assignments that are 2 class periods overdue. class day year 2010 Hausaufgaben und Stundenplan 1 M 23.
