Principia Network Installation Instructions Network Installation Requirements Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP Pentium PC Minimum RAM: 16 MB RAM Windows 95, Windows 98;32 MB RAM Windows NT 4.0 Recommended RAM: 32 MB RAM Windows 95,Windows 98; 32 MB RAM Windows NT 4.0 Refer to CD-ROM for server space requirements 15 MB free disk space on client workstation (40 MB for Principia Mutual Funds Advanced) Online Updates Minimum System Requirements If you choose to set up Online Updates, the following system requirements apply to the workstation to which you have chosen to administer Online Updates. The hard disk space requirement refers to the amount of free space on the drive where Principia is installed. Internet access with at least a 28.8 KBPS modem or dedicated line Microsoft Internet Explorer v.4.01, or equivalent (you can install it using the Principia CD-ROM) Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP 100-200 MB free hard disk space, depending on the modules installed Installation Instructions The following instructions apply to subscribers with valid network subscriptions. Please refer to the Principia license agreement for information regarding the maximum number of users that can access Principia under your subscription. If this is the first time you are installing Principia to your network, please make sure you have your license disk. If your network administrator does not have the license disk, please contact the Technical Support department at 312-424-4299. The network installation comprises three parts: the Server Installation, which installs Principia to a drive accessible to all users, the Client Installation, which places fonts, icons, shared files, and registry entries on each user s workstation, and the optional Online Updates setup, which allows network Principia users to receive the latest data seven to 10 days before the CD-ROM update arrives. Please complete the Server Installation before running the Client Installations. The Server Installation must be completed with each update received. Unless you are otherwise notified, it is only necessary to run the Client Installations the first time you set up Principia. Hard disk space requirements may change over time and although we provide approximations here, you should check the CD-ROM label and the installation screens for the most up-to-date information. Please read all on-screen installation instructions carefully.
Part One: Server Installation The Server Installation must be completed before any Client Installations can be run. 1. Enter Windows as you normally would and exit any open applications, including antivirus applications and online services. 2. Insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. For most users, a dialog box appears with basic installation instructions each time you place a new CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive. To begin installation, click Install. (To run the install program manually, use d:\setup.exe, substituting the CD- ROM drive letter if necessary.) 3. The Setup program prompts you through the installation process. Follow the instructions on-screen. Read the license agreement and click Yes to accept it. 4. To begin the network installation, select Multiple-user installation. 5. In the Choose Destination Location dialog box, click Browse, and then select a drive and directory location. (Make a note of this path, you will need it again.) All network Principia modules to which you subscribe (Mutual Funds, Stocks, Variable Annuities/Life, and/or Closed-end Funds) should be installed to the same location on your server. This allows users to gain access to all databases in Research Mode, as well as combine asset types in Portfolio Mode to create multi-asset portfolios. 6. Click Next. If you are installing an update over an existing copy of Principia and wish to keep all the same settings as previous installations, click Update and installation will begin. If you plan to change selection made during the prior network installation, select New/Revised Install. If you select New/Revised Install and make changes, all client installations must be rerun.
7. You are prompted to insert the Network License disk. Assuming your floppy drive is "A," insert the disk and press ENTER (If your system differs, substitute this drive letter accordingly.) 8. Users installing Principia Mutual Funds or Principia Variable Annuities/Life will be asked whether they want to install the Complete Portfolio Holdings files or read them from the CD-ROM. When installed, the Complete Portfolio Holdings for Principia Mutual Funds take up approximately 120 MB of hard disk space; the Complete Subaccount Holdings for Principia Variable Annuities/ Life take up approximately 50 MB. If you choose to leave the files on the CD-ROM, the disc must be in the drive at all times while users are in the program. Reading files from the CD-ROM will slow the operation of these functions. 9. Users installing Principia Mutual Funds Advanced will be asked whether they want to install the Morningstar Page files and the Advanced Analytics files. You can leave the files on the CD-ROM, but you should leave the CD-ROM in the drive when Principia is in use. The Morningstar Page files take up approximately 70 MB of hard disk space. The Advanced Analytics files require approximately 350 MB of hard disk space. 10. You will be asked to specify whether users saved files should default to a shared location on the server or to a directory on each individual s local hard drive. If you select Network drive, you are prompted to accept the default location of the Principia program directory. You can click Browse to choose an alternate network destination for user files. You may choose any location for the files, as long as it is accessible to all users. Users must have "full rights" to this location; they must be able to read, modify, create, and erase files. If you select user s hard disk drive, the user file directory will be created on each user s local machine during the Client Installation. Click Next to continue the installation. 11. The Select Components screen appears. It is recommended that you accept the default for all files. Click Next. to begin.
12. When all files have been successfully installed, an Installation Complete screen appears. Click Finish. View the Release Notes; they contain useful news and information about our software. Users, as well as administrators, should be aware of the contents. Part Two: Client Installation Instructions The Client Installation must be run from each workstation that will be accessing Principia. Most of the instructions for configuring the client workstations are taken directly from information stored during the Server Installation. To simplify the Client Installation, there are a few choices for you to make, and nearly all default to the "correct" answer. To run the Client Installation, you will need to know the network location of the Principia program directory. Note: Due to possible difficulties that may occur with Windows registry files, Morningstar does not support the installation of Principia to a Terminal or Citrix server. 1. Restart the computer and enter Windows. Exit any open applications. 2. Point to Start and Run on your Windows taskbar. Browse to the Principia program directory. Find the \CLIENT subdirectory. Find the setup.exe in the \CLIENT subdirectory. Double-click it and then click OK to begin the Client Installation. Read and accept the license agreement. 3. In the Select Network Path dialog box, confirm the location of the Principia program and data files. This is the location to which your network administrator installed Principia. Click Next. 4. In the Server Product Options dialog box, confirm the Principia modules you ll be using. Click Next.
5. Enter a User ID. The User ID entered will be used to create a default subdirectory for each user s saved files. Because this directory may be located on the server, the User ID is limited to eight characters, with no spaces or punctuation.
6. If your network administrator chose to have saved files default to your hard drive, then the Select User s File Path dialog appears. You will be asked to confirm a default directory for saved user files: c:\ program files\ morningstar\ principia. Accept this location or click Browse to specify a new location. If your network administrator set the default location for users saved files to a network location, a path to a location on your network will appear.
7. Select a Setup Type. A Typical Client Installation installs all needed files and configures registry entries for Principia according to the file locations specified during the Server Installation. A Custom installation allows the user to choose not to install certain shared files or to change the directory from which they will access optional files such as Morningstar Pages. Unless there is a specific case that requires otherwise, Typical should be used. 8. The Client Installation begins. When installation is completed, read the Release Notes, which contain helpful program information. Part Three: Setting Up Online Updates Online Updates and Network Subscriptions Setting up Online Updates for a Network Principia subscription for the first time is a two-step process: First, you must install the CD-ROM to your network server as you do with all Principia updates. Then you need to a select a single workstation on which to perform the Online Update. All network-version Principia end-users will see the Online Updates menu, but only the network administrator can schedule and download Online Updates each month or quarter. If you decide to make Online Updates part of your regular method of updating Principia, there are two methods you can use to set up the single workstation that will perform the update. You should decide which one is best for you, based on the needs of your particular network. Setting Up Online Updates Before you begin Have the Online Access Codes for each of your investment modules handy. You ll find the code at the bottom of each Principia mailing label. You have a separate code for each investment module you receive. Make sure the code you enter corresponds to the product you are installing. If you do not have the code, please call the Technical Support department at 312-424-4299.
Option 1: Setting up Online Updates Using the Direct-to-Network Option With this option, you can set up one workstation to perform Online Updates directly to the Principia folder on your network server. Because Principia cannot be in use while the update is in progress, this update method is not recommended for those who must perform updates during business hours. Direct-to-network updates may be scheduled for the evening or weekends, provided that the workstation can be left on to receive the update during that time. Direct-to-network updates are set up by running the new "Administrator Setup," located on your Principia CD-ROM. This special install program gives the workstation you choose full access to the Online Update functionality of Principia. The Administrator Setup is based on the Client Setup and contains many of the same steps. To set up Online Updates using Option 1 1. Exit all open applications, including antivirus applications and online services. Insert the Principia CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive. 2. Point to Start and click Run on your Windows taskbar. Browse to the Admin folder at the root of the Principia CD-ROM, and then select setup.exe. Click Next. 3. In the Select Network Path dialog box, browse to the location where Principia is installed on the network. 4. Proceed with the installation according to the on-screen instructions--select the modules that you'll be using and enter a name for the workstation's saved files folder. 5. When the Online Update Setup dialog box appears, click Set Up Online Updates. 6. If you do not have Internet Explorer 4.01, the Question dialog box appears, asking you to accept the installation. Click Yes to install the latest, Internet Explorer 5.5. The installation will occur after the Principia installation is finished. 7. The Enter Information box appears. In the text box, type in the Online Access Code for the module named in the dialog. You will be asked to enter a code for each module you have installed to your server. Remember that you may have a separate Online Access Code for each module do not enter the same code for all modules. 8. Select a Setup Type. Select Typical or Custom installation as you normally would. Principia Mutual Funds or Variable Annuities/Life subscribers: Because the Administrator Setup is run directly from the Principia CD-ROM, the default paths offered for optional files such as Complete Fund Holdings
may be incorrect. If you choose a Typical installation and the default paths are not valid, you will be prompted to choose a Custom install instead. Use browse to select the proper path to each type of optional file. 9. When all files have been successfully installed, the Installation Complete dialog box appears. Click Finish. If you chose to install Internet Explorer 5.5, it will be installed now, and then your computer will be restarted. Option 2: Setting up Online Updates Using the Update-to-Intermediate-Location Option For sites where it is undesirable to update files directly on the network, we suggest using an intermediate location as the destination for downloaded files. To use this option you must perform a single-user install of Principia to a single work-station, installing Principia to its local hard drive or other nonshared location. Online Updates started from this workstation will write the new files to the single-user Principia folder. After an update is received, you can verify that the files are correct before copying them to the Principia folder on your network server. To set up Online Updates to an intermediate location, you will use the standard single-user install of Principia on one workstation. Use of the single-user version of Principia in this case is permitted on one workstation only, for the sole purpose of receiving Online Updates. Any other use of the single-user version of Principia by network licensees is prohibited. To set up Online Updates using Option 2 1. Exit all open applications, including antivirus applications and online services. Insert the Principia CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive. 2. Begin setup as you normally do when you are updating Principia on your server, but choose Singleuser Installation when asked. The Choose Destination Folder appears. Type in the intermediate location you would like to use to receivethe update either the workstation's own hard drive or another nonshared location. 3. When the Online Update Setup dialog box appears, click Set Up Online Updates. 4. If you do not have Internet Explorer 4.01, the Question dialog box appears, asking you to accept the installation. 5. Click Yes to install Internet Explorer 5.5. The installation will occur after Principia installation is finished. 6. The Enter Information dialog box appears. In the text box, type in the Online Access Code for this module, which you'll find at the bottom of your Principia mailing label. You must have this code to install Online Updates. You will have a separate Online Access Code for each of your investment modules. Click Next. 7. Proceed through the rest of the installation as you normally do. When all files have been successfully installed, the Installation Complete dialog box appears. Click Finish. For subscribers who chose to install Internet Explorer 5.5, it will be installed now, and then your computer will be restarted. 8. Repeat this process until all Principia modules have been installed. Note:
For information about how to schedule and download Online Updates, see the Principia Getting Started Guide, or click the Help button in Principia. Online Updates Notes Not all of the data in Principia will be updated with Online Updates. The Online Updates feature updates the Research View and other key data in Principia. You must continue to install your Principia CD-ROM each month or quarter to update program files and fund holdings. Principia Mutual Funds Advanced subscribers must install the CD-ROM to obtain the latest Advanced Analytics information and Morningstar Pages, as well as to obtain updated program files and fund holdings. Updated online Delivered on CD-Rom only Research View data fields Complete Fund/Subaccount Holdings and Stock Intersection View Portfolio Views (except Stock Intersection View) Advanced Analytics (Principia Advanced) Morningstar pages (Principia Advanced) Some company data ( Principia Stocks) You don't have to set up Online Updates. If you do not choose to set up Online Updates during the installation of this Principia update, you will have the option to do so in each future update of Principia. If you don't use Online Updates, Principia will work the same as always. You must continue to install your Principia CD-ROM on your network server each month or quarter. We will continue to ship Principia updates on CD-ROM as in the past. You will still need to install your CD-ROM update each month or quarter, even if you have already received an Online Update. Installing your CD-ROM update ensures that all of your Principia data remains current. You have already received an Online Access Code for each of your investment modules. As a Principia subscriber, you are automatically registered to use Online Updates. You have been issued an Online Access Code for each of your Principia modules. This code is the "key" to Morningstar's Online Updates server. You will find your Online Access Code at the bottom of the mailing label of each Principia shipment you receive. There are several ways for you to learn when a new update is available. The day on which updates are first available will vary from month to month. To find out when the new data is ready, you will have several options:
Check our Web site. Online Update availability will be posted in the Help tab of MorningstarAdvisor.com (http://advisor.morningstar.com/support/principiahelp/principiahelp.asp). Request an e-mail. If you do not currently receive regular delivery updates from us by e-mail, send your e-mail address, along with your full name and customer ID number to shipments@morningstar.com. You can find your customer ID number on the mailing label of your shipment, directly under the Delivery Confirmation #. (It's labeled REF.) Check our recorded phone information. Call our Product Support line at 312-424-4288 and follow the prompts. Updates deliver month-end or quarter-end data only. The updated information will always be as of the most-recent month- or quarter-end, so you will only need to download the update once a month or once a quarter. Existing network subscribers do not need to rerun the Client Setup with this release. If you have installed Principia in the past, and the Client Setup was run, it is not necessary to run it again with this release, even if you choose to set up Online Updates. Your Principia network end-users will not be able to access Online Update settings. An Online Updates menu option will appear in Principia for all users, but only the network administrator can schedule and download Online Updates each month or quarter. To learn more about how to schedule and download Online Updates, see the Principia Getting Started Guide, or click the Help button in Principia. About Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 and Online Updates Online Updates requires Internet Explorer 4.01 or higher. If you do not have this version, Principia will notify you during installation. Please contact our Technical Support team at 312-424-4299 if you have any questions. If you are notified during installation that you need to install Internet Explorer 5.5, you may decline. However, if you decline you will not be able to use Online Updates. Installing Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 does not require you to use it as your Internet browser. Users who have other browsers (except earlier versions of Internet Explorer) should be able to continue using them as before. If you use a browser that is not provided by Microsoft, Netscape or AOL, we do suggest that you check with your browser provider before installing Internet Explorer 5.5. If your current browser is an earlier version of Microsoft Internet Explorer, the Internet Explorer 5.5 upgrade will replace it. Any bookmarks (Favorites) you use in your current version of Internet Explorer will be saved. AOL users who run a 16-bit (Windows 3.1) version of AOL should check with AOL before installing Internet Explorer 5.5. The version of Internet Explorer 5.5 provided with Principia permits a minimal install of Internet Explorer and does not include the Windows Desktop Update, Outlook Express, or other components that are not necessary for the use of Online Updates. The following additional system requirements
are needed for the installation of Internet Explorer...1 : Windows 95 Windows NT Workstation 4.0 39 MB hard disk space Service Pack 3 required 39 MB hard disk space Principia Network Version Technical Notes Rights The "rights" of Principia users may be restricted to Read and File Scan only for all subdirectories of Principia except \NETWORK. In this directory, users must have all rights to create, modify, and erase files. If users saved files default to the network directory, users must have full rights to the \USERS subdirectory as well. Number of Users The number of users who can access Principia is determined by your network license agreement. Because Principia is an integrated product, you must license the same number of users for all of your network Principia modules. If your office receives Principia network modules under more than one name, and you believe your number of users is not the same among the different modules, please contact Morningstar to arrange an adjustment to your subscription. Contact our Product Sales department at 800-424-0700 for additional network subscription information. Update of Field Builder Databases for Principia for Stocks Users Each time you install an update of Principia Stocks on your server, the program must copy the newest versions of the Field Builder databases to each user s User Files directory. This process happens automatically the first time each user opens the program after the update is installed. If the Field Builder files on the server are in the process of being copied to one user s directory, and another user opens the program before the process is finished, the second user will receive a message letting him or her know that the Field Builder files are in use. Principia will then open, but Field Builder will be unavailable. The program will keep trying to copy the updated files each time it is run until the files are copied successfully. Adobe Acrobat 5.0 Installation with Principia Mutual Funds Advanced Only Adobe Acrobat Reader is installed at the end of the Client Installation routine if an Adobe Acrobat product has not been previously installed to the workstation. If Adobe Acrobat is already installed on the workstation, Acrobat Reader will not be reinstalled. If the Adobe Acrobat Reader needs to be installed on the workstation, please select the defaults offered during the installation process. Due to licensing restrictions, the version of Adobe Acrobat Reader supplied with Morningstar Principia may not be installed on a network server for sharing by multiple users. The installation of Adobe Acrobat Reader uses registry entries to determine if Reader is already present on the workstation. If a user had Adobe Acrobat Reader in the past and removed the program by deleting the directory instead of running the uninstall program, registry entries will still be present and will prevent the silent installation from running. If this occurs, it will be necessary to manually install Adobe Acrobat Reader. You can do so by locating the \ACROBAT subdirectory of Principia on your server, and running the setup.exe from that directory. Shared DLL and OCX Files on the Workstation The Principia Client Installation places.dll and.ocx files in the workstation s WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. A complete list of these files can be found elsewhere in this document. In the event that a more current version of any of these files is already present on the workstation when the Client Installation is run, Principia will not overwrite the file. A list of.dll and.ocx file versions currently being shipped with Principia is available from our Technical Support Department.
Registry Entries The Principia Client Installation creates a group of registry entries under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE MORNINGSTAR. These entries contain pathing information essential to the operation of Principia. To ensure the integrity of the workstation s registry, it is strongly recommended that you restart Windows before installing any software that created registry entries, including the Principia Client Installation.
