About Us Message from fhe CEO Welcome to the New Zealand College of Massage (NZCM), New Zealand s leading Massage Therapy tertiary provider. The NZCM was established in 1993 and acquired by the New Zealand Institute of Sport in late 2011. NZCM is the only national provider of massage in New Zealand, with sites in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch. We are also proud of the fact that NZCM is one of a few to offer a degree level programme in massage therapy in the world. Our Massage Therapy courses are designed to cover a wide range of skills and knowledge required for diverse careers in the Massage Therapy industry. We offer courses covering Sports Massage, where students learn the treatment of soft tissue, musculoskeletal dysfunction, and sporting injuries. Massage Courses & Career Opportunities Massage Therapy Courses Our massage therapy courses are designed to cover a wide range of skills and knowledge required for diverse careers in the massage therapy industry. Our entry level course the NZCM Certificate in Relaxation Massage (Level 4), ensures that students have explored all aspects of the industry in preparation for higher level diploma and degree studies. Scholarships are awarded on the following criteria: Academic Excellence and Community Contribution. There are also a number of places for Pacific Island and Maori available. To apply for scholarships, individuals are required to send a detailed Curriculum Vitae, a cover letter and two written references of support along with the application of study. John Fiso Scholarship A diploma student may be awarded the John Fiso Scholarship at the discretion of NZCM management. The selected student must have achieved both in academic and therapeutic massage areas to an excellent standard. NZCM Certificate in Relaxation Massage Programme Objectives Your certificate will enable you to practice massage professionally for the relaxation of healthy people. Employment opportunities include: self-employment, work within the spa industry, on-site workplaces, corporates, fitness centres, tourism, hotel industry and health centres. These are wide ranging learning experiences and are intended to reinforce in-class practical tuition. Practicals are assessed through methodologies such as: Case studies Student clinic Community placements Students are required to assist finding paying clients for the Student Clinic Practical Opportunities NZCM students are encouraged to participate in a wide range of practical opportunities to enhance their experience base. The ability to use friends and family to practice in-class learning is essential with many case studies necessitating home-based study and massage. NZCM clinicals are designed to help prepare students to work in real world environments such as spas and massage therapy clinics. All clinical contact refers to standard industry practices and processes. NZCM Diploma in Health Sciences: Therapeutic Massage Programme Objectives Your diploma will provide the basis for working as a professional therapeutic massage therapist. There are many career opportunities including self-employment, working alongside other professionals in a multi-health practice, e.g. physiotherapy, acupuncture, osteopathy or medical centre. Other opportunities include ski-fields, fitness centres, cruise ships, tourism, spas, resorts, hotels, on-site corporate, rest homes and rehabilitation centres. NZCM Diploma in Health Sciences: Massage & Sports Therapy Programme Objectives Your diploma will provide the basis for working as a professional therapeutic and sports massage therapist. The sports massage industry in New Zealand and internationally offers many opportunities to work with active people, educating and guiding them through incorporating massage into their recovery and maintenance programmes. Build a deeper understanding of how to work with a team or individual, with someone who exercises to keep fit or is an international competitor, in a sports setting or in your own clinic. Massage & Sports Therapy is about working with active people who have goals while getting to know how a team or individual functions by utilising techniques to suit stages of training through a well rounded understanding rehabilitation and recovery. Student Activities Sports Exchange Each year students come together to support athletes at the New Zealand Institute of Sport National Sports Exchange. NZCM students massage the competing students at the event while also receiving professional development training. This is a fiercely contested competition, with massage playing an integral role in helping the competitors perform at their best. It is a fantastic opportunity to get together with students from other centres. Massage Partnerships NZCM have a variety of relationships with volunteer and sport groups that provide mutual benefits and learning experiences for our learners. NZCM can proudly acknowledge a wide range of groups including: The Hospice, Relay for Life, CentrePort, Central Pulse and Northern Mystics (Netball), Wellington Saints (Basketball), and the Wellington Phoenix (Football). Oxfam 100km Walk This internationally renowned event in Taupo allows students to massage exhausted participants. Making it a popular and much appreciated placement. Students also massage high performing sports teams, which allows broader and more diverse learning experiences. Massage Awareness Week Each year NZCM plans events to celebrate massage awareness week. These events are designed to get students out of the classroom and into the community to raise public awareness of the benefits of massage. Massage Clinic NZCM are proud of their Student Clinics, which offer affordable massage to the public across all three sites in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Students gain valuable experience, while using their internationally recognised qualifications that are on par with the best training the world has to offer.
