INTRODUCTION THE RETURN OF INVESTMENT IN MEMBERSHIP IN THE INSURANCE BROKERS ASSOCIATIONS The Insurance Brokers Associations represent, support and protect the interests of independent general insurance brokers by identifying the public agenda issues affecting general insurance and by contributing to the decision making process. REPRESENTATION Provincial - maintains continuing liaison with the elected leadership of the Government as well as appointed administrators and ensures that the opinion of the indepen dent general insurance broker is registered in debates affecting general insurance. Federal - Through our membership in the Insurance Brokers Association of Canada (IBAC), we also represent the interests of brokers as they are continuing our ef forts to ensure that financial institutions are not permitted to gain any further foothold in the insurance arena. Insurers - Regular meeting with the Insurance Bureau of Canada ensures our views are represented directly and the expertise of the independent broker is available to the benefit of all. Consumers - Periodic contact with representatives of consumer groups provides opportunities to reinforce our community involvement. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT 1. The Canadian Accredited Insurance Broker (CAIB) program is designed by general insurance brokers for general insurance brokers. While the course is offered to all brokers, successful completion of the course qualifies only our members for use of the professional designation, CAIB. The course is available on a self-study basis as well as by immersion. 2. The Canadian Professional Insurance Broker (CPIB) is the senior designation program developed by IBAC and its member associations. This is a program for the broker who has already earned his/her CAIB or CIP designation and wants the fulfillment, career advancement and recognition that higher achievement brings. Designed for the property and casualty marketplace, the CPIB program has three distinct streams: Personal Lines, Commercial Lines and Broker Management. 3. Canadian Certified Insurance Broker (CCIB) professional insurance designation was established to recognize a professional standard of excellence in general insurance to which all brokers strive. This designation, for use by our members only, has become a coveted symbol of achievement among general insurance brokers and is recognized by the insurance industry at large. Examinations to qualify for use of the CCIB are held annually in May and December. 4. The Professional Selling for Insurance Brokers (PSIB) program is based on validated sales competencies. It will help you establish yourself as the kind of person any buyer would want as a partner. You will learn how to use consultative selling techniques, and practice them through role-playing, group exercises and business case studies. This will provide you with a step-by-step process to acquiring and retaining customers. The program is particularly appropriate for account managers, sales and service staff. The course is available as a three-day in-class experience. 5. The H.B.Comm program is an online program which embraces courses in management science, statistics, accounting, finance, organizational behaviour, marketing, 3

operations and strategy and advanced electives in relevant areas of business, all taught by a faculty with the ideal combination of academic qualifications and real world experience. The curriculum is challenging and stimulating, incorporating teamwork and building the leadership and soft skills needed to succeed in today s fast-paced business environment. 6. The MBA program is an online program that expands on the insurance broker s business experience to promote a higher level of understanding of the skills necessary for sound business and senior management decisions. 7. The Best Practices program is especially designed to assist Canadian brokers with benchmarking their operations against 150of the top performing brokerages in North America. The program will help you do an in-depth financial analysis of your brokerage, comparing net revenue, profit percentage, growth rates and average commission per employee. 8. Fundamentals of Insurance, a qualification and licensing course, is presently one of the courses of study used for licensing of general insurance brokers and agents. 9. Seminars are offered periodically dealing with both technical and brokerage management topics such as Directors and Officers Liability, Errors and Omissions, Organizing your Brokerage, Automobile Insurance and Environmental Liability. NETWORKING Conventions are held annually offering a number of education opportunities as well as a trade show hosted by providers of goods and services to general insur ance brokers. Members have a chance to meet and socialize with their peers, exchanging information, and participating in seminars. The four Atlantic Associa tions join together every second year to participate in an Atlantic Convention, meeting with fellow brokers from across the region. Annual Meetings provide all members the opportunity to have a say in the direc tion of their association. PUBLICATION Our news magazine, The Atlantic Insurance Broker, is published quarterly and is designed to keep members informed as well as to provide opportunities for members to seek and share information. OTHER MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS/SERVICES Getting back to the words in the title of this article, Return On Investment,the Broker Identity Program, BIP, along with its logo, the Bipper, can be used by member brokers to stand out from other insurance providers as those who work to provide their clients with an independent appraisal of their insurance requirements. The Bipper is ours to use. The more we display it in our offices, advertisements, stationery, etc., the more recognized we become. The four Boards of Directors are individual insurance brokers who offer their time on a volunteer basis. They are representatives of the general brokerage scene - large and small, city and rural, male and female. All members have the opportunity for direct participation in Association business. The investment you make in your Association by becoming a member and submitting your dues is exactly that... an investment. Individually, we cannot resist the intrusions into our businesses; we cannot provide the required education programs to our staff; we cannot speak with a strong voice to industry and government. By joining together in a strong Association, we can ensure a prosperous future. 4
