Congratulations to Year 6 and also Year 5 who presented their inquiries to the school. Petra, Simon and Bernadette did an outstanding job in preparing, challenging and affirming the students. Maree Williams, Head of Religious and Curriculum Services, attended yesterday and wrote; I was moved by the level of confidence and excitement each student had in explaining their project and the depth of knowledge that they had about their area of inquiry. The celebration showed that each student can achieve in an environment that is open to the students taking risks and owning the learning. I was particularly impressed by the inclusive nature of the performance where each student had an equal role to play in the dance and dramatization. Please don t forget next Tuesday night for our Thank you evening and farewell to Maureen Read. With every best wish for a happy and peace-filled week ahead, PRINCIPAL S NEWS This week at the start of November were the feasts of All Saints and All Souls. The origin of All Saints Day is to be found in the prayers made to the martyr saints of the persecuted Church in the early centuries. All Souls Day reflects the constant teaching of the Church, stretching back into the Old Testament period where it is recorded, 'It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from their sins.' These beautiful feast days are both a source of inspiration and a consolation that we, in the world of strife and confusion, can aspire to be reunited with our families and friends in the joyful perfection of Heaven. We have had a wonderful week celebrating learning and last night our Year 6 students proudly presented their Exhibition. Exhibition is part of Year 6 graduation, a graduation of learning. The purpose of Exhibition is for students to engage in an in-depth, collaborative inquiry into a personally significant topic, to demonstrate independence and responsibility for their own learning, and to take action as a result of their learning. It is a time for them to synthesize and apply their learning of previous years and to reflect upon their journey through the PYP. Their presentation last night provided an opportunity for students to share their message with the community Judy Spence judy.spence@cg.catholic.edu,au www.holytrinity.act.edu.au T: 62814811 F: 62814005 E: office.holytrinity@cg.catholic.edu.au

4 This week we have the Nguyen Family story Our Family Our small family of 4 people, consists of my husband, I and our two children, Gabrielle who is 14 and Dominic who has just turned 12. In contrast, our immediate families are very big compared with an Australian family. My husband has 7 siblings while I have 10! Most of them are in Canberra, the rest are scattered in Europe, United States and Vietnam. My in-law s parents and my parents were born in the Northern Vietnam. They had gone through many wars. They tried to run away from Vietnamese Communists, and resettled in the South. They re-established their lives and had very happy life for about 20 years in Saigon, now Ho Chi Minh City. In 1975 when Saigon was taken over by the Communist, my husband s family escaped Vietnam. My father in law worked for the South Vietnamese Government and also for the American Government in Saigon, and if the family did not escape, the whole family would be treated badly by Communists. My family was not lucky and could not leave Vietnam in 1975 in time. Our family experienced a difficult time in Saigon until my brother who has been in Australia since 1973 as a Colombo scholarship student, sponsored us here in 1989. My father passed away 60 days before he meant to leave for Australia. We appreciate the fact we are very lucky people to have migrated into Australia. The Australian people and Government welcomed us and supported us generously with their warm hearts. My husband and I attended Universities in Canberra and afterwards were able to find jobs. If we were still in Vietnam, we would not have the same opportunity because we had a family member who worked for the lost Government. We met each other and got married in 1996. Gabrielle was born in 2001 and Dominic in 2003. We have taught our children about love and how lucky we are in Australia in hope that they will realise and appreciate what they have and to become good citizens when they grow up. They will love people who are not as lucky as them, participate in the community works, and do their best to make the world a better place. Watching our children grow up and being happy everyday, is a gift we thank God and life for.
