How students choose these programs Students from the district make applications via our Choice Programs Dept. They have to meet a minimum criteria usually consisting of a 2.0 GPA They are then placed in a lottery for the spaces available Students who are in our boundaries apply directly through the registration process Present our programs at district Middle Schools and an all district Showcase for all programs Host an Open House for interested incoming students Provide tours
Purpose of the Academies Expose students to career possibilities in the areas of the academies Real life application Interesting programs that keep students engaged in school Foster creative talents while pursuing a rigorous academic curriculum Provide a setting for students interested in the arts and vocational programs in our area of the district
Structure Students are clustered into small learning communities Begin with an introductory course Move to double periods of directed study in their area of choice complete the program with internships and or OJT
Rigorous Curriculum Correlates to the new high school grading system Offer advanced placement classed along with academy classes that the majority of academy students are enrolled in Industry certification Support for students who need enrichment or remediation
Lessons learned Begin with the end in mind Develop your four year plans of study that includes: Required courses for the academy Required courses for graduation Honors and advanced placement/dual enrollment choices Remedial classes where necessary Pre AP classes for 9 th and 10 th grade students
