NEWSLETTER Spring/Summer 2015 Great Lakes Talking Books Reader Advisory and Outreach Center 1615 Presque Isle Ave Marquette MI 49855 (906) 228-7697 http://greatlakestalkingbooks.org/ or 1-800-562-8985 Dear Patrons, First of all, I d like to introduce myself. My name is Lynn Buckland-Brown and I m the new Reader Advisor here in Marquette at the Great Lakes Talking Books Reader Advisory and Outreach Center. Our former Reader Advisors, Ruth and Joanne, have retired. They miss all of you that they came to know as dear friends. Even though I had excellent training from Ruth before she left, I learn something new every day and I thank you for your patience! I grew up in Escanaba and have recently moved to Marquette after retiring as a Special Education and art teacher. My mother-inlaw is a Talking Books Patron and enjoys listening to her audio books very much. I am excited about working here and assisting all of you with your Talking Books experience. Please feel free to call me Monday- Thursday, 8:30 AM-2:30 PM, or stop in for a visit! We re in the process of remodeling the interior of our office and plan on having a Listening Center for those who would like training concerning the use of the Digital Machines or learn how to download audio books onto personal computers and ios devices.

Breakthrough Smartphone App Reads Print The KNFB Reader iphone app allows blind or print-disabled users to quickly and independently scan and read a variety of documents on the iphone 5 or newer, running ios 7 or higher. The user can snap a picture of a printed page to hear the words read aloud. Text may also be read using a connected Braille display. Critical for the blind user are the auto rotate feature and the field of view report which help frame the document in the camera and tell you how much of the document is visible. The new KNFB Reader was named one of the Top 10 Assistive Technology Breakthroughs of 2014 by the Perkins School for the Blind. *The GLTB Library does not endorse any company, product, website, or service mentioned in this newsletter. The information offered is meant for personal reference about new resources or services of interest to our patrons. Using Bookshelf to Find Book Titles on a Thumb Drive Locating specific book titles on a cartridge or thumb drive containing multiple titles is easy if you use the Bookshelf feature. It allows you to navigate back and forth through the cartridge to find the book title you want to read. After inserting the cartridge into the digital player, hold down the GREEN Play/Stop button until you hear the word Bookshelf. Release the Play/Stop button and tap down on the white arrow-shaped FAST FORWARD button to move through the titles on the cartridge until you hear the title of the book you want to read. To move BACK through the titles, hold down the Play/Stop button until you hear Bookshelf, then tap down on the white arrow-shaped REWIND button. Digital Player s Battery Life It is important to remember to keep your digital player plugged in when not in use. If it is unplugged for an extended period of time, the power level in the battery could drop to a very low level and won t ever fully recharge.
